HELENA DORLENCOURT AITCHISON - February 15, 1968 - March 13, 2024

Departed: 03/13/2024 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: Hélèna Anne-Marie Dorlencourt Aitchison (1968-2024)
Hélèna Anne-Marie Dorlencourt Aitchison was born to Hervé and Béatrice Dorlencourt in Perpignan, a southern French city near the Mediterrean coast and the border of Spain. She moved to the United States in 1992 and married her husband, James September 18th in 1993. Over the years, people would ask her which country she preferred, America or France. She would answer by providing an exhaustive list of attributes from each country and claimed that she wanted them all. In other words, she preferred to create her own country!
For those who know Hélèna, there simply are no words to adequately describe her dynamic personality: she was the life of the party and the life of the family. She thought of the family as a garden she was responsible for tending. Undeniably beautiful inside and out, she was also an indomitable spirit and force to be reckoned with. As a mother of three and grandmother (Nena) of three, she was indeed a matriarch and servant leader in the purest form, always putting the family’s needs before her own. With boundless energy, she made quiet sacrifices throughout each and every day of her life, keeping them to herself as she soldiered on.
To know Hélèna was to love her. She loved her family and large community of loyal friends in return and without condition. Along with her family in France, she was charged years ago by her grandmother, Geneviève, to keep the precious family tradition of generosity and gathering as a family. It is no wonder that throughout her life and leading up to her last days in our earthly company, she never ceased to prioritize gathering with her family and friends as often as possible.
She loved and revered the truth, goodness and beauty found in her Catholic faith. Relying on that faith handed down to her by her ancestors from her crib, she exhorted her family in her still strong French accent that even when she will no longer be here, she is more here! She wanted us to assume the responsibility to continue to gather, to console one another and to be consoled knowing that she will continue to love and pray for all of us.
Hélèna is survived by her parents Hervé and Béatrice Dorlencourt; her husband James; her children, Audrey Steensma, Lauren Aitchison, and Alexandre Aitchison; her 3 grandchildren: Sebastian Steensma, Anastasia Steensma, and Geneviève Steensma; as well as her sisters Benedicte Nitot, Clotilde Savy, and Natacha Clarke.
She will be laid to rest with her ancestors in the family estate cemetery in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, France.

Tam Tran - April 08, 1928 - December 30, 2023

Departed: 12/30/2023 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: Tam Trần Obituary
Tam Trần was a loving father, a loyal and selfless husband, a doting grandfather and great-grandfather. He was the beloved and revered patriarch of the Trần/Mạch family, and a vibrant, active member of the local Vietnamese community in San Diego. Surrounded by his family in love and gratitude, he passed away on December 30th, 2023.
Tam Trần was born on April 8th,1928 in Vietnam to his mother, Nguyễn Thị Thâu and father, Mạch Phương. He found the love of his life in the beautiful and formidable Luợm Thị Cao. Once married, they together raised 5 handsome sons (Mạch Nam, Phát, Thành, Nam, and Sánh) and two gorgeous daughters (Liên and Lan). The family bore deep roots in the southern city of Cần Thơ, where Tam provided for his family with his popular Chinese barbecue stand. His barbecue was known to be the best, and became a staple of the town. But his craft of cuisine didn’t end there. He was a master of the Wok, and could wield a cleaver like it was an extension of his own hand. Give the man a whole roasted pig and in mere minutes it was ready to be served.
When the Vietnam war ended, and his home country left in turmoil in the late 1970s, Tam and his wife made every effort to send all but one of their children to America for chances at better lives. Like all those whose families fled and severed during that era of strife, the hope was that one day all will be reunited in a better, more hopeful place. After over a decade apart, that reunion happened in 1987 when he, his wife Luợm, and their youngest daughter Lan were finally able to join the rest of their family in San Diego, California. This is where Tam would call home alongside them for the rest of his years.
Tam enjoyed supporting his son, Nam, and then daughter-in-law, Thu, at their restaurant, Café Doré, for many years. It was a long running cafe that served the local Vietnamese community; where Tam found joy in his daily routine helping in the kitchen and shopping in the community for supplies. Arriving before sunrise, he tended to the daily duties of bringing the busy kitchen to life by firing up all the delicious baked goods in time for opening. Once all was set and prepped there, he would head off to his young grandchildren for school pick ups.
Tam and his wife helped to raise two of their grandchildren while their son, Sánh, and daughter-in-law, Tuyết, were busy at work. For these two active grandparents, food was their love language as they served up delicious meals for the family on a daily basis. From picking up his grandchildren from school, to going on field trips, to taking care of bathtime and mealtimes, Tam was a constant, guiding, and loving figure in their lives.
Tam thrived on contributing to his Vietnamese Buddhist community at the local temple. He enjoyed dedicating countless hours volunteering and cooking at Chùa Bà Thiên Hậu, and made many friends over the years there. With his masterful Wok skills, he regularly whipped up vegetarian dishes for the temple visitors and members to enjoy.
Tam had a fondness for tinkering and finding treasures, repurposing his findings and fixing them like new. He was drawn to bright and colorful things, especially flowers. If he came across fun toys on his outings he would save them to give to the youngest of the family. If you were visiting he’d either have something to feed you, or a random knick-knack to gift you. He had a knack for seeing value in the most random of objects, and filled his cozy home with them to his delight.
Tam liked to always keep busy. He was an avid reader of local Vietnamese newspapers to stay on top of current events. He enjoyed gardening, thrifting, and morning walks at Chollas lake where he’d feed the ducks, geese, and fish. He was a devoted Buddhist who chanted prayer daily. He enjoyed watching cải lương as much as the Paris By Night music videos. His home was a social hub of constant friends and family visiting (or playing cards). He was a sharp dresser (don’t forget the slick hats) at every opportunity, and the man always looked great in a suit.
Tam lived 95 beautiful years full of compassion, positivity, and love in his heart. He was a loyal, selfless, hardworking, dynamic man whose love for family was unwavering. He was happiest when among them, with his community, or with friends. He was our pillar and our patriarch. Through it all, it was his wonderful wife and life partner, Luợm, that he loved most, to the core of his heart, as he remained by her side until his very last breath. His legacy will live on in his 7 children, 11 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren — with more on the way.
Tam Trần is survived by his loving wife: Luợm Thị Cao, his sons: Phát Kim Trần, Nam Trần, Sánh Trần, his daughters: Liền Ngọc Trần and Lan Ngọc Trần. His Grandchildren: Trinh Mạch, Việt Mạch, Larry Trần, Lân Trần, Hân Trần, Vyvy Trần, Steven Trần, Phụng Trần, Danny Trần, Alan Trang, and Geena Trang
His Great-grandchildren: Lana Mạch, Alexander Trần, Elizabeth Trần, Jaden Choy, Kenzie Choy, Kennedy Nguyễn, Skylar Nguyễn, and Benjamin Trần.
Tam Trần was preceded in death by his mother, Nguyễn Thị Thâu and father, Mạch Phương; his sons, Mạch Nam and Trần Thành, and grandson Trần Hà Hiệp. Services to honor and celebrate Tam's remarkable life will be as follows: Wednesday, January 17th, 2024 Viewing: 2:00pm - 7:00pm Cali Home Chapel 7403 Princess View St. Suite E San Diego, CA 92120 Thursday, January 18, 2024 Viewing: 9:00pm - 12:00pm Service: 12:00pm - 1:00pm Cali Home Chapel
7403 Princess View St. Suite E. San Diego, CA 92120 Interment will follow at 2:00pm
At Greenwood Memorial Park & Mortuary, 4300 Imperial Ave. San Diego, CA 92113, where Tam will be laid to rest.
Tam will be deeply missed, and his legacy will continue to inspire. His cherished memory will live on through the fondly told stories passed on for generations.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, allowing them to attend funeral services, send condolences, or make donations in memory of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. You may also include charitable organizations or causes that were important to the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died under difficult circumstances?
