Janice Marilyn Friess - March 05, 1935 - February 24, 2024

Departed: 02/24/2024 (Perry)
Obituary Preview: Janice Marilyn Friess, 88, of Rippey, IA passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, February 24, 2024 with her daughters by her side.
Janice was born in Auburn, IA on March 5, 1935 to Edwin and Zillah (Mowry) Spafford. Her youth was filled with reading and farm life which she loved. She fondly recalled, sitting at the barn one day, when a cow started licking her until her shirt was nearly pulled off! Another time her dad came in, interrupted her reading, and set her at the helm of their two horse team while her dad and two brothers did the harvesting. Jan was grounded in practicality and wisdom.
Life had its ups and downs in her adult life, until a family enveloped her, and invited her to a new church. It was there that she found the love of her savior and a new refreshing, reviving life, in Jesus Christ. From that day forward she remained a faithful servant of God.
Living at her home in Rippey with her husband Don, children brought forth grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were her great joy and fulfillment. She took great interest in whatever interested them. In each of those lives, while sitting at her dining room table, she listened and offered words of wisdom, depth of faith, with the Bible itself at the center.
Her interests were reading, T.V. and movies (anything with a good story.) She loved home and yard work and enjoyed her independence greatly. She kept herself busy with cleaning and making repairs in clever ways, knitting, crocheting, and quilting at the church next door. She was employed a few places, but her favorite and most long-term employment was at Alco in Perry. As of late, news and politics became of great concern, to which she shared her opinions. The stuff of life was exciting to her and she would’ve kept on living and enjoying it, if only she could.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents Edwin and Zillah, husband Donald and siblings, Eugene Spafford, Daniel (Betty) Spafford, and Barbara (John) Snyder.
Those left to cherish Janice’s memory are her three children, Richard (Teresa) Friess, Rhonda Kiner, and Diane (Rich) Pearson, as well as her step sons, Nick and Claude Friess and their families.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jenny (Steve), Ang (Jonathan), Matthew (Katie), Adam James, Brian (Dara), and Heather (Shawn); her great grandchildren, Alanah (Brian), Ethan, Wes, Harper, Sawyer, Layne, Julia, Skylar, Aryanna, Matthew, and Xzavier; and “the little kid”, her great GREAT grandson, Rylan.
A visitation for Janice will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home Perry Chapel, with a service beginning at 11:00 am. Burial will take place at a later date at the Rippey Cemetery. Online condolences for the family can be made at caldwellparrish.com.

Daniel Oliver - August 02, 1937 - February 11, 2024

Departed: 02/11/2024 (Perry)
Obituary Preview: Daniel Edgar Alfonzo Oliver, 86 years old, of Apolo, Bolivia, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2024 surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren.
Daniel was called back to his heavenly home to join his mother, father, brother and his loyal companions, Kusi & Mr. Mitch, the cats. In life he held many titles but the most important to him were those of husband, father and grandfather.
He was survived by his loving and devoted wife, Shandra, his children Marcos (Consuelo), Brandi (Mike), Jennifer, Connie (Omar), and Danny (Cazandra); his twenty grandchildren; Diego, Alvaro, Melanie, Jackie, Alessandra, Carla, Cherie, CJ, Jazmine, Cheyenne, Dannielle, Brandon, Massiel, Renzo, Fiorella, Sofia, Sebastian, Adela, Gisela, y Luccianno; His twenty-five great grandchildren Samirha (15), Nicole (13), Zeke (12), Eli (11), Noah P. (11), Harper (10), Liam (9), Benjamin (9), Everly (8), Jhojan (8), Hayden (8), Bryce (7), Fabrizio (7), Noah W. (6), Derek (5), Ezra (5), Henry (4), Jessie (4), Campbell (3), Luciana (3), Tate (3), Jaren (2), Everett (2) Gabe (1), Lyla (6 mo.).
A diabetic, he could always be counted on to slip candies to each of his grandchildren with instructions of “don’t tell your mother!” Daniel loved to eat. He believed that life could not be fully enjoyed unless there was a good meal to be shared in the process.
Dad was an adventurer who was happiest riding the Bolivian savannas on horseback, trekking through the Amazon rainforest and sleeping under a mosquito net on the jungle floor. He found peace listening to the wild calls of the southern screamer, the guttural roar of the howler monkeys and the purring growl of the ocelot.
Dad felt a personal call to help those less fortunate than himself and would often be found serving at jails, homeless shelters and nursing homes, helping them know of the mercy and love that God had for them.
His last wishes were to see his brothers and sisters join the church because his love for them transcended this life. Daniel is now and will always be missed greatly but his family is comforted in knowing they will reunite with him after their earthly sojourn is complete. The lyrics of his favorite hymn O My Father ring in our hearts as he has moved on from this earthly sphere; “O my Father, thou that dwellest in the high and glorious place, when shall I regain thy presence and again behold thy face?...when I’ve completed all you sent me forth to do, with your mutual approbation let me come and dwell with you.”
Till we meet again, dad.

Ernest D. Faber - August 30, 1926 - January 24, 2024

Departed: 01/24/2024 (Perry)
Obituary Preview: Ernest D. Faber, 97, of Perry, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at the Perry Lutheran Home - Eden Acres in Perry.
Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at First Church of Christ, 310 NW Ash, Ankeny. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Minburn with full military honors rendered by the Minburn American Legion Post # 99 and the Iowa National Guard Honor Guard.
Ernie was born August 30, 1926, in Minburn, the son of Harvey and Mary (Reeves) Faber.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served with the occupational Forces in Japan at the end of World War II from June 14, 1945 until November 8, 1946.
After being discharged from the Army he finished his studies at Cincinnati Bible Seminary and was ordained into ministry at Minburn Church of Christ. On June 13, 1952, he married Neva Fate in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Ernie and Neva were missionaries in Japan for 45 years on the northern island of Hokkaido. During their ministry they planted three churches, operated a children’s English language school, and developed a church camp. Over the years they offered their support and encouragement to many young missionary families who arrived in Japan. Ernie loved to drive visitors around to view the beauty of the island of Hokkaido.
Ernie was an avid collector of Japanese stamps, getting up early to line up at the post office on the issue date to get stamps for himself and all of his kids. He enjoyed watching sumo wrestling tournaments and he followed Japanese baseball on TV, making sure the radio was ready to go in case the game wasn’t yet over when the TV broadcast shut down at 9:30 pm. He was always ready for a game of horseshoes.
He was an avid reader. He collected a large library of books and even in Japan continually subscribed to magazines and journals to keep himself informed of world, national, and local affairs. He was very patriotic and politically involved.
When Ernie and Neva retired from the mission field in 1999, they moved to the Faber family farm just outside of Minburn. Ernie bought a pickup, an old Farmall tractor, and had a great time puttering around the place tinkering with machinery, mowing the grass, and keeping up a big garden. Ernie and Neva became very involved at Washington Chapel Church of Christ where Ernie served as an elder. Ernie also was very active with the Minburn Post of the American Legion, where he served in a variety of positions. Until Covid shut things down when he turned 92, he faithfully drove into Perry on Monday mornings to offer a Bible study to the “old folk” (as he termed them) at the Rowley nursing home (now the Eden Acres campus of Perry Lutheran Homes). He also made it a point to drive to Des Moines to attend the monthly meetings of local ministers. For many years he and Neva were active with the Des Moines chapter of the Japan American Society, and Ernie served as treasurer.
Ernie embraced technology. He was quite comfortable with computers and things like social media, and until a year ago regularly preached by Skype for a church in Japan.
Survivors include his wife Neva Faber, three of his children, Linda Svoboda, Charles (Patricia) Faber, Allan (Debbie) Faber, his daughter-in-law Pam Faber, thirteen grandchildren, Kevin (Elizabeth) Worcester, Jason Worcester, Melissa (Matthew) Sleasman, Ryan (Alison) Faber, Mary (Roy) Senters, Margaret Walters, Phyllis (Chris) Burns, Jared Faber, Josiah (Linda) Faber, Nathan (Christy) Faber, Leah (Vincent) Forgo, Aaron Faber, and Lydia Faber, two sisters, Lulu Jean Zuercher and Georgene (Larry) Tegeler, and many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Mary Faber, his son Donald, his son-in-law Jerry Svoboda, his brothers and sisters, Lavina Thurwanger, Joseph Faber, Matthew “Dale” Faber, and Mary Ellen Thurwanger and two great grandchildren.
