Joseph Dennis Hardy - May 07, 1950 - April 25, 2024

Departed: 04/25/2024 (Urbandale)
Obituary Preview: We lost a man of music, art, philosophy, science, and untold threads of knowledge. My sister Barb once asked him, “how do you know all this stuff, Joe?” “Well, I read a lot and sometimes make up stuff to fill in the blanks.”
Makes me smile thinking about it.
He passed away last Thursday night at Mercy Hospital while waiting for a bed at Kavanaugh House. So like Joe to leave on his own terms. Jack was with him and Liz and I quickly returned to the hospital.
Blurry, painful days, so you rely on what you know. I know that he deeply loved me, Jack and Amanda, Liz and Thomas, and especially his girls, Fae and Judy. He also loved this large, exuberant family, and it is this love that is giving us such comfort and strength right now. So grateful for all of you, family and friends. Joseph Dennis Hardy May 7, 1950-April 25, 2024
Joe was born in Des Moines to Miriam Firkins Hardy and Thomas E. Hardy. He is predeceased by his parents and an older brother, Thomas.
Joe graduated from Roosevelt High School and Drake University with a Fine Arts degree, going on to study printmaking at Northern Illinois University. Always interested in technology, he earned a computer IT degree and worked as a networking specialist.
He is survived by his wife Lorrie Anderson, Des Moines, his son Jack Hardy, daughter-in-law Amanda Hardy and granddaughter Fae, Kansas City; daughter Elizabeth Hardy, son-in-law Thomas Hardy and granddaughter Judith, Des Moines. His survivors also include a large and loving family of aunts, uncles, cousins, as well as dear friends.

David James Moermond - May 11, 1956 - April 16, 2024

Departed: 04/16/2024 (Urbandale)
Obituary Preview: David James Moermond, 67, of Urbandale, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday morning, April 16, 2024, at Unity Point - Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.  He was born in Primghar, Iowa, on May 11, 1956, to Jacob and Ruth (Kohn) Moermond.  He graduated from Sutherland High School in Sutherland, Iowa. Right after graduation he started working construction. On one hot summer day, when he was digging in a pit where it was 120˚, he realized that the guy outside the pit, where it was only 100˚, had a college degree.  That sent him to Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo, Iowa, where he earned an A.S. in engineering technology.  Immediately upon graduating, he went to work for the Polk County Engineer’s Office.  After seven years there, he went on to earn a B.S. and an M.S. in civil engineering at Iowa State University and an M.P.A. at Drake University.  He was Project Manager and Vice President at HR Green Engineering until his retirement in 2019.
Dave met his wife, Mary, in 1981, and they traveled the world together.  He loved to travel!  Their third date was a roadtrip (in his MGB convertible) to see the Iowa Hawkeyes play in the 1982 Rose Bowl.  He and Mary visited 43 countries during their marriage.  His favorites were Egypt and Israel.  They just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in August with friends and family.
Dave liked working with his hands and was always willing to help out - making repairs around the church, building decks for his siblings, cleaning up the neighborhood after the derecho, gathering tons of iron in Iowa fields when his brother’s cattle barn blew apart in a tornado, or helping his brothers with the planting and harvesting on their farms.
Dave was a member of Walnut Hills United Methodist Church in Urbandale.  He was on the property committee there and always came home from meetings beaming, saying, “Gosh, we have a good team!”  He was also a member of the Alliance Française of Central Iowa and was its treasurer for over a decade.  After retirement he enjoyed taking OLLI classes at Drake.  His 1979 maroon MGB convertible was his pride and joy. Mary often said he loved it just a little less than he loved her.  For several years Dave was a member of the Iowa British Car Club, taking day and weekend trips around Iowa along the scenic routes.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law and his brother-in-law.  He is survived by Mary, his wife of 40 years; his brother, Dan (Val) Moermond of Hartley, Iowa; his sister, Cyndi (Bob) Stewart of Altoona, Iowa; his brother, Josh (Becca) Moermond of Sutherland, Iowa; his sister-in-law, Sue (Dino) Vlahos of Sleepy Hollow, Illinois; his nephews, Nick (Alyssa) Stewart and Nate (Lindsey) Stewart of Bondurant, Iowa, Jacob (Jessica) Moermond of Spencer, Iowa; his niece, Stephanie (Clint) Hoermann of Royal, Iowa; his nephews, Case (Kirstin) Moermond, Dain Moermond, and Gabe Moermond of Sutherland, Iowa; and his nieces, Olivia (Alex) Vlahos of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and Taylor (Samuel) Desmond of Crystal River, Florida.  He had eight grand nieces and nephews, with one on the way in August.
A celebration of Dave's life will be held on his birthday, Saturday, May 11, at Walnut Hills United Methodist Church, 12321 Hickman Road, Urbandale, at 11:00 A.M.  Pastor Nate Nims will officiate.  There will be a visitation from 9:00 - 11:00 A.M. before the celebration.  A luncheon will follow. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice, in Dave’s name. Online condolences can be made to the family at caldwellparrish.com

Earl Monroe Seeley, Jr. - January 25, 1944 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (Urbandale)
Obituary Preview: Earl Seeley (80) passed away on April 6, 2024, at Karen Acres Healthcare Center in Urbandale, Iowa. Burial and a graveside service will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery (34024 Veterans Memorial Dr, Adel, IA 50003) on Thursday, April 18th at 2:00 pm.
Earl Monroe Seeley Jr. was born to Earl Sr. and Doris (Compton) Seeley on January 25, 1944, and was raised in Califon, New Jersey. He earned a degree in economics from Rider College, NJ. He played baseball at Rider with scouts eyeing him for professional ball, but the draft was approaching.
Earl spent two years in Iran with the Peace Corps, primarily teaching English. He returned to the States to attend a management graduate program and was soon drafted into the Army, based at Ft. McPherson, GA (Third US Army). Earl worked in intelligence with early computers, toured with top flag football and softball teams, and as a member of the soldier show, lifting spirits of service members all over the South. Earl was an amazing singer, with a beautiful natural instrument.
Earl moved to Colorado to work at CU Boulder, married Debra Chandler (Stephens), and had one son Neil and stepson Ryan Baldi. During the 1970s and 1980s, Earl moved into banking until the energy crisis. He left the world of financial services and took a job as a delivery driver until his retirement in 2013. Earl and Debra divorced in 1983/84, raised Neil together, though Debra remarried and moved to Memphis, and Neil stayed with Earl in Arvada, Colorado.
Earl was tremendously talented but found his true calling as a father. Earl embraced his role as a single dad, hardly missing a game, performance, or school event, all the while keeping two to three jobs to make ends meet. At one point, he delivered papers in the morning and mowed lawns at night around his regular job, bringing Neil along so he could still play catch between lawns or catch up on the day. Later in Neil’s schooling, Earl was a regular and beloved fixture at events. Arguably Earl’s greatest legacy, warm hugs to his son every morning and every night.
Earl followed Neil and his wife Erica to Minneapolis in 2005, and ‘Papa’ jumped right into babysitting grandchildren, Norah and Kieran. He later retired and followed Neil and Erica to Des Moines, where Papa took up a new delivery route, getting Kieran and Norah to and from Webster Elementary School sometimes with a stop for breakfast sandwiches or donuts along the way. Papa continued this role with Ethan and Graham, but culminated his delivery driving career with enumerable trips to and from Urbandale Middle School with Norah until he fully retired in 2020. Earl also cherished time with his Iowa extended family; Noah and Lindsey Braymen for long Thanksgivings, John and Dianne Braymen for Easter and Christmas meals, and Jan Tegeler and the Johnson, Ross, Rockafellow gang for Christmas!
Earl is preceded in death by his parents, Earl Sr. and Doris Seeley, and good friend Rush Limbaugh.
Left to cherish Earl's memory are his son Neil (Erica) Seeley; siblings, Sandy (Tom) Hill, Sherry Potopowitz; grandchildren, Norah, Kieran, Ethan, and Graham as well as a host of extended family and nurse friends from Karen Acres.

Ernie Lee Schillinger - March 23, 1956 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (Urbandale)
Obituary Preview: Ernie L. Schillinger, 68, of Johnston, IA, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at MercyOne West Des Moines Medical Center from complications related to adult-onset muscular dystrophy. Visitation will be held April 20, 2024, at All Saints Catholic Church in Des Moines, IA, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to All Saints Catholic Church.
Ernie was born on March 23, 1956, in Moline, IL to Lloyd and Marjorie (Westerhof) Schillinger, and he was raised in Osco, IL. Ernie was an outstanding scholar, graduating summa cum laude from Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, IA, with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He maintained his CPA certification throughout his life. Following graduation, he worked at Deloitte Haskins & Sells before joining MidAmerican Energy Company in Davenport, IA. Ernie retired from MidAmerican in 2017. He developed many close friends at work and shared his great sense of humor with them, especially during the Friday night outings in Davenport.
Ernie met Sara J. Hoffa at a Halloween party (both wearing very silly costumes), and they married June 14, 1986, in Davenport, IA, where they lived before moving to Sioux City, IA in 1995. They moved to Johnston, IA in 1997. Ernie was overjoyed when their son Matthew was born. Ernie’s love, pride and support of Matt never waned.
Ernie always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved the mountains, and the family’s many summer car trips to Colorado and Wyoming were filled with adventure, laughs and natural beauty. Holidays spent with his family in Osco were memorable (in a good way) for him. Going to the movie theater was a great pleasure for Ernie, and he looked forward to watching action and comedy movies. Ernie was a true “numbers guy” and was a master at creating and managing budgets for the family and others. If it had a number in it, he remembered it; he could tell you every phone number he ever had in his life.
Ernie was a kind and gentle person, seeing the best in others. He always tried to do the right thing in life and strived to treat everyone fairly. Before taking action, he would spend hours thinking about how people would be impacted. He had a strong faith. Ernie frequently thought he wasn’t worthy of others; what he didn’t understand was we weren’t worthy of him.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Brenda Papke and Carla Schillinger, and nephew Kevin Papke.
Left to cherish Ernie’s memory is his wife Sara; son Matt; brother Barry (Lydia) Schillinger; many nieces and nephews; and cousins.

Betty Jean Janssen - March 09, 1931 - March 26, 2024

Departed: 03/26/2024 (Urbandale)
Obituary Preview: Betty Jean Janssen (Long) of Des Moines, Iowa, left this world on Wednesday, March 26, 2024. She was surrounded by loved ones, both family and friends in her final days, just two weeks after her 93rd birthday.
Betty Long was born on March 9, 1931 in Indianola, Iowa to Orville Long and Mary Charlotte Padget. She grew up with her parents and 5 siblings, Darlene, Dorothy, Marley, Harlan and Dwight.
On September 4, 1950, she married the love of her life, Harold E. Janssen (1931-2021) and devoted herself to being a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Betty and Harold purchased Krumm Sales & Service, an outdoor power equipment company that became an icon of the Des Moines area for over 55 years. There, Betty played an integral role in managing  the business. She became the gatekeeper of administrative duties such as bookkeeping, payroll, customer service, keeping the showroom sparkling, and her business partner (Harold) and their three sons in line. She was a loving and supportive mother to her boys, Pat, Mike, and Terry Janssen.
Betty and Harold’s second home was at the Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri where they enjoyed water activities with family and friends for decades. Until her seventies, you would find Betty floating on a mat in the water, or skiing behind their Century Coronado boat. She was always warm and welcome to anyone who stopped by, and loved hosting by whipping up baked goods. Her friends would describe her as smart, kind, graceful, and always welcomed them with a little humor and sass. Betty was a firm believer that you should eat your dessert first, a clean kitchen is a happy one, if you’re bored you should go to bed, and anything can be solved over a bowl of ice cream or a little sunshine. She wore many hats in her lifetime, both figuratively and literally. A festive hat was her way to celebrate life on any given holiday or just a Tuesday afternoon,  the more flowery, glittery and bigger the better.
Betty is survived by her sons, Patrick, Michael (Sharon), and Terry (Kathy) Janssen; Grandchildren, Nicole (Josh) Colwill, Matthew (Catie) Janssen, Madisen (Michael) Olson, Zachary Janssen, Jennifer (Ryan) Berning, Jonathan Janssen and Katelynn Janssen; and great-grandchildren, Camden Berning, Carter Berning and Grace Janssen.
Betty will be deeply missed by her family and friends. To honor her life, a visitation will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory in Urbandale, Iowa. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, April 13, at 10:00 am, with a luncheon to follow at Saint Theresa Catholic Church in Des Moines, Iowa.
The family would like to extend their heart-filled thanks to the staff, care-givers and friends at Morningstar Assisted Living in West Des Moines, Iowa.
