What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, achievements, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include details about their life, achievements, and any notable accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary text and any accompanying photos.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they want to be remembered. This can also help alleviate the burden on loved ones during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional context and information about the person's life.

Can I include humorous or lighthearted elements in an obituary?

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private aspects of the person's life that you don't want to share publicly, it's best to omit them from the obituary or discuss them with family members beforehand to ensure everyone is comfortable with what is shared.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's legacy and support a cause they cared about.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline can vary depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may have a delay of several days or even weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. If you need to make corrections or updates to an already-published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform directly to see if they can accommodate your request.

Are online obituaries permanent?

Most online obituaries are archived permanently and remain accessible for years to come. This allows friends and family to revisit the tribute and share memories at any time.

Can I share an obituary on social media?

Absolutely! Sharing an obituary on social media can help spread the word quickly and reach a wider audience. Many online obituary platforms also provide easy sharing options.

How do I find an old obituary?
