Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to share the news of a person's passing with others, allowing them to pay their respects, offer condolences, and celebrate the person's life. Obituaries also serve as a way to provide important details about the funeral or memorial service, such as the date, time, and location.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life, accomplishments, and personality to create a meaningful and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually shorter, ranging from 100 to 200 words. Online obituaries can be longer, often up to 500 words or more. The key is to strike a balance between providing enough information and avoiding unnecessary details.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and help others remember the person. Some publications may also accept photos for print obituaries.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you typically need to contact the paper's obituary department directly. They will provide you with guidelines on word count, format, and deadlines. You may need to provide proof of death, such as a death certificate or funeral home confirmation.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. If you do decide to write your own obituary, make sure to share it with your loved ones so they know your wishes.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and features. Online obituaries are often free or low-cost, while traditional newspaper obituaries can range from $50 to $500 or more.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituaries can often be edited or updated easily. If you need to make corrections or additions, contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and its deadlines. Online obituaries are often published immediately or within a few hours. Print newspapers may take several days or even weeks to publish an obituary.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the person who has passed away. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help bring comfort and smiles to those who read it.

What if I don't have all the information needed for an obituary?

If you're missing certain details about the person's life or don't have access to specific information, don't worry. You can still write a meaningful and respectful obituary that celebrates their life and legacy.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems that were meaningful to the person can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just be sure to verify the accuracy of any copyrighted material.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private aspects of the person's life that you'd rather not share publicly, it's okay to omit them or phrase them discreetly. Remember that the goal of an obituary is to honor and celebrate the person's life.

Can I include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory. Be sure to include the charity's name and any relevant details.

How do I notify social media platforms about someone's passing?

Much like writing an obituary, notifying social media platforms about someone's passing can be a difficult but important task. Each platform has its own process for reporting deceased users; search for reporting deceased user along with the platform's name for guidance.

Can I write multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?
