Gene Thomas Tracy - October 26, 1950 - October 07, 2023

Departed: 10/07/2023 (Cleveland)
Obituary Preview: Gene Thomas Tracy, known affectionately by friends as Tracy and by family as Gene, was a beacon of light for the underserved and a force of unyielding care for others who felt they had no voice. Born on October 26, 1950, in Cleveland, Ohio, Tracy's life was a testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring spirit of humanity. On October 7, 2023, in Redding, Connecticut, Tracy bravely bid the world farewell with family by his side after a heroic battle with cancer. His permanent residence at the time was in the artistic Tremont area on the West Side of Cleveland, Ohio which fed his creative soul where he enjoyed many friendships.
A hardworking son, dedicated brother, and loving uncle, Tracy was an irreplaceable family member. He was the son of the late Jean and Frank Tracy. He was the adored brother of Brad Tracy (Jackie Tracy), Kathlene Tracy (Nick Greiner), Patty Thewes (Ken Thewes), and Diane Tracy (Gerry Unger), and the late Frank Tracy (late Lyn Tracy). Tracy's legacy lives on through his nephews Dylan Greiner, Forrest Greiner, Dustin Tracy (Sarah Tracy), Nick Tracy, Taylor Thewes, and nieces, Deidre Tracy, Lindsay Tracy who will always remember their uncle's wisdom, care, and generosity.
Tracy's passion for education was ignited at Parma Senior High, and it continued to burn brightly throughout his life. He pursued a Bachelor of Arts at Cleveland State University and later, graduate coursework at Notre Dame College. It was this relentless pursuit of knowledge that led him to a fulfilling profession as a mathematics teacher within the Cleveland City School District. For 30 years, Tracy was not only a teacher, but a fierce advocate for his students, both within the classroom and out as an ongoing staple at the Board of Education Meetings up until his death.
His lifetime activism and humanitarian efforts sought to advance the education and welfare of inner-city youth. Tracy believed in the value of education as the key to opportunity, the importance of unions and power of joining. He was vehemently against economic inequality and the influence of money in politics. Additionally, Tracy distinguished himself with ongoing contributions toward changing policies to improve care of our environment for a healthier planet to benefit the generations that follow.
Tracy was an individual of many talents and interests. A gifted musician, he played in bands during his early adulthood, and during his mid-years, often invited friends and family to jam sessions in the basement of his home with walls draped in art and Rastafarian flags. His love for music was eclectic and profound, from outdoor Reggae concerts to enjoying other genres indoors or everyday listening to the unique sounds of Dread Zeppelin, a blend of hard rock and reggae songs performed by an Elvis impersonator. He had an uncanny knack of finding beauty in the unusual that seemed to work. He loved fine foods and truffles. Tracy also had a deep appreciation for horticulture, a hobby that brought him immense joy and solace. He had fondness for the Florida Keys, where he often sought respite as a young man. Tracy had an enduring passion for motorcycles, often describing the sensation of riding his Yamaha bike as feeling one with it when he road. This sense of freedom and adventure was not just a hobby for Tracy, but a philosophy that he incorporated into every aspect of his life. "Live free or die."
Intelligent, passionate, and creative, Tracy was a man of extraordinary talent and determination. He fought for causes relentlessly, whether or not the efforts would yield a win. It was not just the victory that mattered. Rather, it was letting those that you were fighting for know that someone cared enough to endure the fight regardless of how many times they may be knocked down. This was in hopes that they would see that they too can endure and/or overcome their own circumstances.
Let us remember Gene Thomas Tracy not with sorrow, but with gratitude. Gratitude for his unwavering dedication to education, for his tireless advocacy for the underserved, for his infectious passion for music and the arts, and for showing us no cause is too small if it includes someone in need.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy for future generations.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on what information to include.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable achievements, awards, or charitable contributions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.
