Inez "Jean" Margaret Iliff - September 26, 1936 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Munster)
Obituary Preview: Jean (nee Erickson) Iliff, Hammond Indiana, passed away on March 19, 2024. She was 87. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Everett Iliff. Her daughters Betty Jean Rivera, and Natalie (Ed) Iliff. Her grandchildren Missy (Tim) Fredenrich, William Rivera Jr., Les Rivera, Matthew (Noemi) Rivera, and Michael Stepp. Also, 13 great-grandkids and 12 great-great-grandkids She was preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Inez Erickson, and brother David Erickson
Jean graduated from George Rogers Clark High School, attended some classes at East Chicago Business College, and obtained her Real Estate License in 1987. She was especially proud of her typing, shorthand, and organizational skills. While living in Florida in the 1960’s, she worked as a legal secretary for a law firm while also working part-time for a judge, and was offered the opportunity to further advance herself in that field, but turned it down to put her family first. She worked for several years as a secretary here in Hammond during the 70’s and 80’s. In 1974, she was awarded a certificate of appreciation for secretarial training in a sponsored program for high school students. Natalie—
Jean liked to travel across the country and see new places. She liked country music way back when country wasn’t cool. She always weighed the pros and cons over everything she did in life, and we would spend many nights discussing ‘what-if-this’ or ‘what-if-that’ happens. She liked having friends and although most of them moved away, she always managed to at least send them a Christmas card with a handwritten note inside, and made time to visit them while on vacation. She always tried to be fair to everyone and do the correct thing. The secretarial side of her was ever present as even family had to often make an appointment to visit with her. Like her mother and grandmother before her, she had a spirit of determination. Betty—
Jean was a force to be reckoned with and believe me, if she didn’t like what you were doing, she wasn’t afraid to tell you. She was strong-willed and knew what she wanted and when and how she wanted it. She loved a good laugh and her kids and grandkids were always ready to give her one. She loved war movies and good drama shows like BlueBloods, Blacklist, and NCIS (her favorite) and shows like Dancing with the Stars. She definitely did love vacation time and being able to visit family and friends along the way from the East Coast to the West Coast. However, I would still have to say she loved Las Vegas the most. The glitz, the glamor, the shows, the slots, ahhh … that was the life. She was always on the go and the energy and get up and go she had made even me tired just watching her or trying to keep up. She was a woman with a purpose and goals in her life, and I’m glad to say she accomplished about 90% of them.
