Stanley Leon Powell - April 04, 1944 - May 30, 2023

Departed: 05/30/2023 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Stan Powell passed away with family by his side May 30, 2023.
Stanley Leon Powell was born April 4, 1944 to Cecil and Della Powell in Flagler, CO. He was the second child born in the family, with Kirby being the oldest, followed by Colleen and brothers Lynn and Bill. They lived in Bethune, CO until 1957 and moved to Walsh, CO until he graduated from high school in 1962.
During his childhood, Stan and his siblings enjoyed country life rich with adventure and mischief. He and his brothers hunted coyotes and bulldogged jackrabbits off the backs of their ponies. They once attempted to catch a skunk in a culvert to tame and keep as a pet.
As it turned out, that boy who aimed to befriend a skunk was destined to spend his life as a veterinarian. Stan had a big heart, and made a meaningful life of caring for his community and their animals.
Stan met the love of his life, Sharon Cook, in school in Walsh, where they both graduated and went on to CSU. They married in 1966 and would have been married 57 years this September. Stan and Sharon were blessed with two boys, TJ and LD.
They moved to Bethune in 1968, when Stan started working with Dr. Milton Vondy, where he practiced for 55 years. Stan was devoted as a veterinarian, he serviced a wide range of clients in eastern Colorado and western Kansas. He frequently did preg checks and served as the vet on Thursdays at the Sale Barn.
He was recognizable with his Resistol cowboy hat, black in the winter and straw in the summer. He’d sometimes drive upward of 500 miles a day. He often offered free consultations, teaching on a phone call or a visit over a Budweiser.
For fun, Stan loved participating in the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) Team Roping Events. He was many times a champion as a header and heeler. He was also the CVMA President from 1990 to 1991.
Stan consistently gave his time to the community. Every year he served as the vet on call at the Kit Carson County Fair & Rodeo. Stan and Dr. Vondy were recipients of the Kit Carson County Iron Horse Award in 2017, and he received the Service Above Self Award from Burlington Rotary Club in 2019.
One of his greatest accomplishments in life was becoming a grandpa. Hadley Tee was born in 2009, and he loved spending time with her. The first couple of years after she was born he would stop by on Saturday mornings to play with her or hold her for a while. As she grew up he spent many days at the barn with her hanging with the donkey Sam or trying to get “Gertie” broke so he could teach her to ride. He also helped her with her sheep and loved to go watch her at her many activities.
Stan is preceded in death by his loving wife, Sharon Powell, his parents Cecil and Della Powell and in-laws Roland and Cecil Fern Cook, his brother Bill Powell, and his niece Tatum Cook.
Those left to mourn him are sons TJ Powell (English), LD Powell (DeShane), granddaughter Hadley Powell, brothers Kirby Powell (Marge), Lynn Powell (Maria), sister Colleen Mailhot (Dick), sister-in-law Charolotte Desilet (Ron), brother-in-law Danny Cook (Lori) and many nieces and nephews.
A public visitation will be held from 5-7PM Thursday June 8th at Love Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington, CO. A Funeral Service will be held at 10AM Friday June 9th at the Kit Carson County Fairgrounds with Pastor Bill Viergutz officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Burlington, CO.
Memorials may be left at Love Funeral Home to be made to Dr. Stan Powell Memorial Scholarship Fund.
A reception to follow the cemetery service at the show barn at the KCC Fairgrounds to fellowship and eat.

Sharon Joyce Powell - June 15, 1944 - May 10, 2023

Departed: 05/10/2023 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Joyce Powell passed away with her family by her side on May 10, 2023.
She was born June 15, 1944 to Roland and Cecil Fern Cook at Camp Forrest, Tennessee while her father was in the service. They later moved to a farm 12 miles south of Walsh, CO. There she grew up on the farm helping her dad and mom. She went to school in Walsh where she excelled in most things she did. She graduated in 1962 and then went to CSU in Fort Collins. She met Stanley Powell while in high school and they furthered their education at CSU. Sharon got her B.S. degree in physical education, where she found a love for teaching that would continue for 30+ years. They moved to Bethune where she started her teaching career.
Stan and Sharon were married on September 4, 1966, and had two sons, TJ (1969) and LD, (1973). Stan and the boys were her everything. The twinkle in her eye when she talked about them made everyone smile. In 1979 they built their forever home south of Burlington. She was involved in every aspect of their lives, whether it was 4H, sports or cooking meals for them and their friends.
As a former 4H kid, Sharon once won Champion showmanship at the National Western Stock Show with her steer “Big Dipper.” She took that lifelong love of animals and community and applied it over the years as a parent and 4H leader. She truly enjoyed being involved and helping anyone who needed it. She had many adopted “kids” that she loved to watch and help learn to show lambs.
Sharon was such a pillar in the community, particularly when it came to sports. She was instrumental in starting the Burlington Wrestling Club. She organized many tournaments and ran them remarkably well. She and Coach Doug Duell spent many days together for the high school wrestling program, and he became a very close family friend. For years, Sharon took an interest in managing the mat maids, who she treated like daughters. She was also a referee for volleyball for many years.
Sharon’s passions included cooking. She never met a kitchen she didn’t like. She loved to cook, bake and make snacks like her “little drummies” and scotcheroo cookies. She loved to give back and take care of everyone before herself.
The next twinkle in her eye arrived October 26, 2009. Her granddaughter Hadley arrived and Sharon stayed with her the next three days in the hospital while mom and dad were in the hospital in Denver. She loved to bake with her and help her with lambs. Going to her activities, having sleepovers and watching her was a highlight.
Sharon has fought a good fight with liver cancer for many years. She is preceded in death by her parents Roland and Cecil Fern Cook, her in-laws Cecil and Della Powell, brother-in-law Bill Powell, niece Tatum Cook. Those left to mourn her, her husband Dr. Stanley Powell, sons TJ Powell (English), LD Powell (DeShane), granddaughter Hadley Powell, sister Charolotte Desilet (Ron) brother Danny Cook (Lori), brother-in-law Kirby Powell (Marge), sister in law Colleen Mailhot (Dick), brother-in-law Lynn Powell (Maria), and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at 5PM, Thursday May 18th, 2023 at the United Methodist Church 290 13th Street in Burlington, Colorado. Funeral Services are scheduled for 10AM Friday, May 19th, 2023 at the United Methodist Church in Burlington. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Burlington, Colorado. Departed: 05/03/2023 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Simona-Maria Monica (Acosta) Sandoval, a long time Burlington resident, passed away unexpectedly on May 3, 2023. Simona was born on December 2, 1979, in Denver, Colorado to German and Maxine (Castro) Acosta.
Simona spent her early years in Denver and attended Annunciation Catholic School. She enjoyed the time she spent with her mother and father in the garden as well as many activism events they rallied for. Her family moved to Burlington when she was a young teenager. It was in Burlington that she graduated and met many of her lifelong friends. Simona could often be found with her friends on the weekends cruising Main Street with her music as loud as it could be. Simona graduated from Burlington High School in May of 1998. Shortly after, in 1999, she met her love Richard Sandoval Jr. and began her family. Their first child and only son, Angel in August of 1999. Their three daughters Maxine, Katiri and Chayin followed.
Everyone can agree that Simona never knew a stranger. She was friendly and approachable and made friends with anyone and everyone she met. She took the time to enjoy even the small things like camping and doing makeup. She became a CNA and enjoyed her time working with the elderly in their homes. She had a caregiver’s heart her entire life. That shone through with how she also cared for her family. She loved spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren, often cooking for them and playing with them. Simona’s spirituality was especially important to her. She found much peace in praying, reading her Bible and just simply enjoying a good novel although Readers Digest was one of her favorite reads. These hobbies were not enough to keep her from her love of Bingo night! Her departure is an unimaginable loss to her family and her friends.

Troy Eugene Troutman - May 21, 1980 - April 29, 2023

Departed: 04/29/2023 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Troy Eugene Troutman was born on May 21st, 1980 to Boots and Penny Troutman.
He peacefully passed away on April 29th, 2023. He is survived by his sister Ashley Troutman. He was married in July 2021 to Elizabeth (Durbin) Troutman.
He was preceded in death by his spirit wife Erica Elam, and too many loved ones to name.
Troy's personality was larger than life and if you knew him you knew to expect a lot of laughs and a lot of random things that only he could come up with. There will never be another like him. He had a tight group of friends that were for life, they were his brothers though not biologically.
For the last few years he traveled the United States with his wife and dogs. First Autumn (may she rest in peace) and then Zeus. They were his constant companions. The mountains were his true home and I know he is standing on the tallest one looking out over a sunset. He was a warrior in all that he did and fought hard all the way to the very end. He is all around us. He's still protecting us as he always tried to do. Don't cry for him because he hated tears. Smile and remember the amazing times you had with him. That's what he would want you to do and you know he is right.
It was Troy's desire not to have a ceremony, but to be remembered as he was in life.

Sullivan Andrew Yersin - February 19, 1968 - April 15, 2023

Departed: 04/15/2023 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Sullivan Andrew Yersin passed away unexpectedly on April 15, 2023 in Denver, CO. He was 55 years old. Sullivan is survived by his wife Dereka Pedersen, parents Della and Ken Yersin, brother Lincoln Yersin, and sister-in-law Kyle Yersin.
Sullivan was born and raised in Burlington, CO. While he had many interests as a young man, you could usually find him at the pool, swimming. He swam competitively for many years before heading to Denver to attend the Colorado Institute of Art. He graduated with a concentration in photography and his passion for art followed him throughout his life. Be it a camera, a paintbrush, or a collection of discarded items from the alley – he could transform anything into something beautiful.
Sullivan spent most of his life in Colorado. He adventured in the Rocky Mountains and along the Front Range, amused that so many folks hauled such elaborate gear into the wild when all you really needed was a sleeping bag and a can of beans. He welcomed the birth of house music in Denver, hearing some of the first record mixes coming from his neighbor upstairs on Larimer Street. That music sustained him, and it remained in his heart for a lifetime. And LoDo. He haunted those streets long before it held that name. Those years held many of his favorite memories and a good part of him never left.
Later, Sullivan and Dereka moved to Topeka, KS for the start of a new chapter. They spent the next twenty years collecting a trove of friendships, stories, and explorations. Sullivan touched so many lives. You could not help but fall in love with his generous and truly unique personality. Those of us that remain are left with a gaping hole, but we count ourselves fortunate for having had him in our lives.

Rosetta Frances Palkowitsh - November 26, 1947 - March 11, 2023

Departed: 03/11/2023 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Rosetta Francis (Ellis) Palkowitsh was born on November 26, 1947, to Raymond and Stella Ellis. We all know that the youngest child is the
favorite being the seventh sibling and last Rosie was no exception.
Stella and Rosie had a special relationship and were almost inseparable. When electricity came to the farm in 1950, they were able to install a shower in the well house, a luxury her siblings never had. The
bathroom was always a 2-hole outhouse, so she was not spoiled at all. Tragedy came just months before her 7th birthday in 1954 when her mother became ill and had to have a medical procedure that was followed by complications and her passing. As her dad did his best to take care of the two girls that were still at home (Jane 14, and Rosie 6), the family was involved in helping Raymond. By August of 1955 it was apparent that the girls needed to move to Garden City and attend school, Jane would live with Grandma Ellis and Rosie would live with
Maybelle and her two daughters Venitta and Verna Ruth. Within the next 8 years Maybelle would have 4 more children (all boys) to add to the household. Josephine who lived in Lakin, KS also had two daughters
Donna and Peggy, and Rosie would spend her summers with this family. In 1962 Rosie’s Dad, Raymond would begin his battle with emphysema, Milton and Josephine, Bob and Karen, Kenneth and Maybelle, would take turns providing home health care for Raymond as he was bedridden and on oxygen. He suffered a heart attack and passed away
just one day before Rosie’s 15th Birthday in November 1962. Rosie graduated from Garden City High School in 1965. She met Raymond Palkowitsh during the summer after high school and left home to attend Brown Mackie Business College in Salina graduating 9 months later. She then took a job in Washington DC. After it became apparent that he would fulfill all her dreams, Rosie returned to Kansas in July 1966. Rosie and Raymond made wedding plans for November 5, 1966, and had a beautiful wedding at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Garden
City. In August 1967 Raymond and Rosetta welcomed their first child Ricky Paul into their blessed lives. Soon after in March 1969 they welcomed a beautiful baby girl Richelle Ann into the family. After residing in Scott City, KS for the next 21 months Raymond, Rosetta and family packed up everything including the house and moved it all to Burlington, Colorado
to begin the next chapter of their lives. As Raymond started farming in the Burlington area Rosie was instrumental in the success of the farm as a full partner while raising two young children. In December 1977 Raymond and Rosie moved everything they owned to the farmstead they currently reside at north of Burlington. She started working at Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital in 1978 as an admissions clerk. After 30 years and many different positions within the hospital she retired as a medical records
transcriptionist supervisor. The greatest fulfillment she received from working at the hospital was helping and getting to know so many community members. During this time, she continued to help on the farm, volunteer as a 4-H leader, religious educator, and many other
church leadership positions. Over the next 7 years she welcomed four granddaughters Jennifer Lucille, Leslie Ann, Abbigail Elise and Alyssa Marie. She always said, “If I had known grandchildren were so much fun, I would have had them first”. She had so much joy in her life following the girls around to all their activities. Many hours of sitting on bleachers in gyms, softball fields, swimming pools, and show rings made her so proud. She enjoyed teaching knitting, crocheting, sewing, baking and cooking to her granddaughters and several other young ladies. Her wisdom was
still being passed on as late as the night before her illness. After her and Raymond both retired, they spent several years traveling, seeing the United States in the pickup and travel trailer meeting many wonderful lifelong friends along the way. As health concerns and issues grew later in life travel became less frequent and more limited to seeing family and welcoming in granddaughter’s new husbands. It brought Rosie so much joy as she has been able to get to know her
Great Grandchildren. Rosetta Palkowitsh passed away after a brief illness on March 11, 2023,
in Colorado Springs. She was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Stella Ellis, her siblings Josephine Coerber, Raymond Ellis,
Robert Ellis, Ronald Ellis, Mary Jane O’Brian, nieces and nephews. Rosetta will be missed by her loving husband Raymond Palkowitsh, her children Rick Palkowitsh (Bonnie), Richelle Harmsen, grandchildren Jennifer Irvin (Rob), Leslie Palkowitsh, Abbigail Leuning (Tanner), Alyssa Harmsen, great grandchildren TJ Leuning, Audrey Leuning, Robbie Irvin,
Bentley Leuning, Ruari Irvin and sister Maybelle Bowen.

George William Gramm - May 10, 1945 - January 25, 2023

Departed: 01/25/2023 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: George William Gramm, a native of Burlington, CO, passed away peacefully with family and friends at his side, Wednesday January 25, 2023, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
George was the oldest child born May 10, 1945 to Loyd Richard Gramm and Fern Esther (Knodel) Gramm. He was the brother to Ron Gramm and Judy (Gramm) Langendorfer.
George’s childhood was spent on the family farm north of Bethune. He was taught farm work at very young age by his father Loyd and also learned from his uncles who farmed close by.
He spoke German until he attended Elementary School. He went to school in a one room school house that is still standing to this day north of Bethune. He would not speak about his early education days without mentioning his teacher Mrs. Eaton. He spoke very highly of her and said he looked forward to the trip to Denver with the class at the end of every school year that Mrs. Eaton would plan.
He went on to attend high school at Bethune School where he graduated in 1963.
George obtained his associates degree in business in Denver, CO. He became a manager at a farm store in Burlington and then in Sterling. Shortly after, he moved to Texas where he began to manage a Sear’s store. George loved reminiscing about the time he spent with his brother and sister when they came to visit. He enjoyed his life there very much and even after his return to Colorado, his heart seemed to still be in Texas.
When George returned to Colorado, he began working for UPS as a delivery driver. It took one serious dog bite before he learned to carry dog treats with him on his route and soon after those same dogs became his friends who looked forward to meeting him in the driveway for their treats. He was known by many as “George the UPS man”. Everyone appreciated his friendliness, his humor and his willingness to lend a hand.
George loved to travel and visit other countries. He went on many trips abroad, several cruises and often had family members or friends at his side. He spent at least one weekend a month taking trips into the mountains in Colorado, his daughters in tow, and returning Sunday night in time to go back to work the next Monday.
He was the father to three girls that came into his life in 1982. He raised them with the same work ethic that he was raised with and at a very young age, his daughters knew how to change tires, dig postholes, grow a garden, work on vehicles, chop wood, and even make small plumbing and electrical repairs.
George overcame many health obstacles. He won his battle with colon cancer, not once but three times. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the late 1990’s and never let that diagnosis or his symptoms define who he was or what he was capable of doing.
Retirement was not easy for George as he liked staying busy. He purchased a farm and made many renovations on it. He turned his farm into his little paradise planting and growing flowers and trees. His favorite were the tulips that he planted along the long driveway. Every year, those close to him would get a call when the tulips would begin to sprout in the spring. He tinkered on his farm staying busy until he moved into town to receive more care for his advancing Parkinson’s disease.
George lived a much fulfilled life. He took advantage of every moment. He helped so many people along the way. He was a good son, brother, father and friend. He will be deeply missed by so many.
George is preceded in death by his parents Loyd and Fern Gramm.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his daughters; Nicky Fairchild, Tracy Canada (Chris Carnathan) and Stacy Canada; his brother Ron (Diane) Gramm; sister Judy Langendorfer (Bill); nephew Lucas Langendorfer and niece Hannah Langendorfer and numerous cousins. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Johnathan, Charlie, Bayliegh, Teddy, Brendan, Logan, Isaac, Madison, RJ, Jetta and Jude and numerous great-grandchildren.
Memorial Contributions may be made in Georges name to the Parkinson’s Foundation and left or mailed to Love Funeral Homes and Monuments 377 15th Street Burlington, CO 80807.

Bill was known to help people whenever he could and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. They were out checking cattle and when they attempted to drive through the blizzard to get home, they ended up getting stuck in a creek bed. They began to try to walk home, but quickly realized it was a bad idea with conditions of the blizzard. They returned to the truck and hunkered down for the night. Bill D. Hinkhouse - March 08, 1928 - December 27, 2022

Departed: 12/27/2022 (Burlington)
Obituary Preview: Among the soft hills around Studley, Kansas, Bill Hinkhouse was born March 8, 1928 to an entrepreneurial family earning their living from the prairie grass. His dad, Guy Hinkhouse, was always on the lookout for the next great opportunity while his mom Maud, a big-hearted woman who favored red hair and high heels, knew the answer to a worrisome windy day was to pack the kids up in the car, visit the neighbors and ride the bad times out at a spontaneous get together. Bill joined a trio: brother Rex and sisters Phyllis and Jean, and grew up in Kansas milking cows, herding sheep, and falling in love with the river by the cottonwoods.
His parents eventually landed in Burlington, Colorado in time for Bill’s freshman year of high school. He played on the Burlington High School 1945 state football championship team and instigated many a school prank that put him and his good friend Bob Hendricks in hot water. Bill would leave Burlington to earn his undergraduate agronomy degree from Colorado State College A&M in 1950, and to answer a call to active duty on North Island Airbase in San Diego, CA from 1954-1956. However, he always returned to his adopted hometown. Throughout his life Bill worked with Rotary on community projects for Burlington and was an avid supporter of Morgan Community College.
Bill and his family moved to Burlington with his lifelong friend Curly Hitchcock who proved to be pivotal to Bill’s future. When Curly married Mary Lacey, a nurse from Fountain, Colorado, Bill met Mary’s sister Billie Lacey at the wedding. It was not love at first sight. Bill’s penchant for teasing did not sit well with Billie. But the rest of the Lacey family became Team Bill when he showed up in Fountain with sheep manure for mom’s sweet peas, restored the younger brothers' broken-down jalopy, and helped put a new roof on older married sister Louise’s house. Eventually Billie came around. Traveling in a train car with an open dome, Billie looked up into the night sky and realized God had a special plan in store for her. And it included Bill Hinkhouse. They wed August 1952. The marriage lasted 70 years, produced 4 kids and 16 grandchildren as well as launched the fourth generation of Hinkhouse family small businesses finding new ways to earn a living on the prairie.
In 1968 Bill and his brother Rex bought their own land and began working for themselves. Great Western opened a sugar processing plant nearby, and Rex and Bill capitalized on their locations and began producing sugar beets. The water intensive crop required innovation in irrigation. Bill and his brother were among Great Western’s top producers for a decade. By the end of the 70’s Bill’s son Barry was too. Hinkhouse Brothers continued to prosper raising wheat and corn after the collapse of the sugar processing plant, occasionally trying out new crops like sunflowers, beans, and barley. Bill and Billie were fortunate to go on two overseas trips to the USSR and South America with other American agricultural entrepreneurs to investigate first-hand different approaches to farming.
The yellow house just south of town was home for almost 50 years. It was surrounded by fields alternating between wheat and corn. Bill built a shop behind the windbreak in the late 80’s and added an office in the yellow house’s basement. Even after he said something about retirement, Bill showed up at the shop every morning to hear the news from the guys and get an assignment for the day too. Then he would track prices in the basement office during the afternoon and end the day in his easy chair reading the paper. “A guy needs to know what is going on around him,” he would advise his children. That observation and Warren Buffet’s adage about persistence were words Bill lived by. He peppered his words with humor and was loved for his easy-going laughs.
Bill became a grandfather in April 1980. Over the next 43 years, the farm and the yellow house would be his blackboard. He would go on to influence and instruct the next generation with his example and his knowledge.
Bill Hinkhouse passed on Tuesday, December 27, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents Guy and Maud Hinkhouse, his siblings Rex Hinkhouse, Phyllis Rawson, Jean Sipe and Robert Hinkhouse as well as grandchildren Garrett Padgett and Matthew Hinkhouse.
Bill will be missed by his loving wife Billie Hinkhouse, his children Barry Hinkhouse (Debbie), Beverly Padgett (Dave), Barbara Leander, and Beth Moore (Doug), grandchildren Jenny Yahn (Brad), Christopher Hinkhouse, Kaley Frost (Wilf), Samantha Lovato (Willie), Kate Hinkhouse, Michael Hinkhouse, Michaela Munguia (Michael), Kellyn Sandquist (Erik), Kira Smith (Sam), Elena Leander, Jackie Leander, Mitchell Leander, Sybilla Moore, and Piper Moore, and great- grandchildren Rylie Hinkhouse, Preston Yahn, Trevor Yahn, Caleb Yahn, Myla Lovato, Chloe Lovato, Jaxon Lovato, and Maddie Munguia.
