Robert Stephen Rummage - May 11, 1948 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Newton)
Obituary Preview: At 9:43 in the morning on March 24th of his 75th year, Robert Stephen (Steve) Rummage left his failing body and this world behind. Also known as “Big Steve” by his friends and family, “Rooster” by some of his oldest football buddies, “Papa” by his sons and grandsons, or just “The Big Guy” by others, he left a big hole in all of our hearts.
Steve was born on May 11, 1948 to Helen Maybell Davis and Luther Dee “L.D.” Rummage Jr. Steve was quickly followed by his sister DeAna (Smoland Spangler) and, after his father’s United States Army Air Corps service overseas, he and his family returned to the United States and he gained two more sisters, Trisha (Lahmeyer) and Judy (McConkey Fox).
Steve grew up as an Air Force brat and his family moved around a bit before finally settling in Asheboro, NC. He was a high school football star at Asheboro High School, earning a trip to the 1966 Shrine Bowl and eventually being inducted into the Asheboro High School Hall of Fame (class of 2012). Legend has it, there are still a few old timers around Asheboro who shudder at the thought of how hard The Big Guy used to hit on the gridiron.
Steve graduated from high school in 1966 and earned a football scholarship to NC State University to play defensive end. He redshirted his first year so he spent five years with the Wolfpack. There, he continued to ring guys’ bells with his hard hits, and would eventually win the ACC Championship with his team in 1968. During fall 1970 of his senior year, the Wolfpack football coaching staff honored him with both the Governor’s Award (MVP) and the Bo Rein Memorial Vital Contribution in an Unsung Role Award.
Steve and the team also earned occasional notoriety off the field: They once got kicked out of an all-you-can-eat buffet after eating “all the food in the place,” forcing the restaurant to close early.
Steve graduated from NC State in 1971 with a degree in geology and immediately entered Officer Candidate School (OCS) — also known as Officer Training School (OTS) – in the United States Air Force. Steve served his country for four years in the Air Force, achieving the rank of Captain and serving as a navigator on a KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling tanker aircraft.
Steve had many incredible tales about his football days and Air Force service but the stories about navigating across the Pacific Ocean with only a map, a watch, and a view of the stars were the ones folks asked to be retold most often. He was assigned to the 19th Bomb Wing, supporting aircraft, crews, and other Strategic Air Command (SAC) organizations involved in combat operations in Southeast Asia. During his military service, Steve also earned: ● National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) for Vietnam War ● Armed Forces Medal (AFM) Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal ● Air Force Longevity Service Award (AFLSA) ● Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon (SAEMR)
Steve was stationed at Robins Air Force Base (AFB) in Warner Robins, GA with Georgia Merritt Rummage and their son Rob “Rooster” when their youngest son, Abe, was born in 1974. After leaving the military in 1976, the family settled in Griffin, GA.
There, Steve served as an air traffic controller at the Southeast Regional Air Traffic Control Center in Hampton, GA. As he loved to proudly claim, he was “fired by Ronald Regan himself” in 1981 when President Reagan fired more than 11,000 air traffic controllers who went on strike. So, after 4 years of service at the airport, he moved on to work as the textile plant engineer for Dundee Mills in Griffin, GA.
In 1988, after a second go-round at bachelorhood, Steve met Laura Lea Smith on a blind date. Steve and Laura Lea dated, fell in love, then married in December of 1988. Steve continued to work as plant engineer for Dundee Mills (which eventually became Springs Industries) and in 1996 was moved to a plant in Hartwell, GA where he worked until his retirement in 2005.
Steve loved sailing and filled his house with a lifetime of trophies and accolades from his time on the water. Steve was also an incredibly talented woodworker. Many of his sailing accolades rested on the beautiful furniture he created, while many family gatherings took place on decks, around tables, and in rooms he built and restored.
Steve was a steady man. He had no flash or glitz about him but was, instead, an abiding lighthouse for the family that surrounded him. He was full of simple wisdom earned through a lifetime of dedication and trials, and knew exactly when to share that wisdom and how to share it in a way we could all understand.
He was a man who almost never had to raise his voice because those who knew him would stop and listen when he spoke. He was a man who quietly and beautifully loved his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents and two of his beloved brothers-in-law. Even to the very last moment, Steve had his best girl — wife Laura Lea “Ottie” Rummage — by his side and she mourns this monumental loss with: his sisters, sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, and their families; and his sons Robert “Rooster” Merritt (Merritt O’Brien) and Abe Rummage (Kathy Scott Rummage), and his grandsons Brodie and Mack Rummage.
Steve will be honored with a military burial service on Friday, May 3 at 11 a.m. at the Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC near the VA (Veterans Affairs) Hospital. The address is: National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Blvd, Salisbury, NC 28144.
IN LIEU OF FLOWERS,  Steve’s family asks donations be made to their local affiliate of Rock Steady Boxing, which has a mission to, “improve the quality of life of people with Parkinson’s disease through a non-contact, boxing-based fitness curriculum. Sally’s YMCA - Rock Steady Boxing Attn: Coach Teresa Mulcahy 1601 Forney Creek Pkwy Denver, NC 28037 Burke Mortuary & Crematory-Newton is serving the Rummage Family

William "Bill" Clyde Bost, Jr. - January 04, 1943 - February 25, 2024

Departed: 02/25/2024 (Newton)
Obituary Preview: William Clyde Bost, Jr. age 81 of Connelly Springs died February 25, 2024 at his home.
Born in Portsmouth, VA, on January 4th, 1943, the first son of Clyde and Effie Bost, Bill, led the simplest of childhoods, spending most of his time with his partner in crime, his brother, David, picking berries for Mom’s homemade pies and preserves, fishing and doing odd jobs for all of the neighbors in need. Bill and David were a team! We know today they are putting their heads together one more time for their ultimate project ahead.
A theologian in every sense of the word, Bill made the decision to serve as a minister in the 11th grade of high school. He set his plan in motion, and after graduating high school, moved from his VA home, all the way to Ambassador College in Pasadena, CA, by way of a Greyhound bus. Life, as it always does, brought many challenges and eventually brought Bill to a road of peace and satisfaction and to the “love of his life”, Audrey, a match made by his mother!
Bill enjoyed singing, good food, things that make life work with limited sight, his family and friends, and sharing stories of his life experiences. Whether he was running a marathon, playing a game of tennis, golf, or soccer, supporting his beloved Seattle Seahawks, or his grandchildren in their many activities, his energy and generosity were contagious. Busy loving Audrey, bringing her flowers and cards, or planning their next trip away, usually to his beloved church events, and ministering to others, his mind was non-stop on organizing what was next. Having read the Bible many, many times, from front to back, when Bill lost his eyesight he was able to recite and recall most scriptures by memory and delighted in teaching anyone who wanted to learn. His mind was a library of knowledge even up to his very last hours. His convictions, his faith never wavered. His last thoughts, “We all have to die sometime. I am ready for eternal life!”
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Effie Bost, by his brother, David L. Bost (Nancy), his sister, Karen K. Jessup, his wife, Dianne L. Bost, and a son, Ted D. Bost.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Audrey Foster Bost, three sisters: E. Frances Plunkett (Rick) of Peachtree City, GA, Helen Rainelle of Sanford, FL, and Janet Byers (Jeff) of Statesville, NC. and two brothers: Stephen A. Bost (Dee) of Williamsburg, VA, and Jeffrey L. Bost of Statesville, NC.
He is also survived by children: Aaron N. Miller (Heidi), Lisa M. Boyles (Alan), David M. Miller (Cindy), Phil E. Miller (Cheryl), Lisa A. Lake, Perry A. Miller (Kim), and Chris Miller, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Grandchildren include: Ethan Boyles, Taylor Bost-Fish, Nicole Grant (Chad), Zachery Boyles, Sarah Towne (George), Jacob Miller, Luke Miller, Logan Boyles, Paul Miller, Donovan Taylor, Autumn Boyles, Wilbert Miller, Abby Miller, Julio Miller, Caleb Miller, Hendrix Boyles, Kaylee Towne, Zoe Towne. Let’s rejoice in knowing that Bill’s eyes are now wide open and he can see!
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM, Sunday, March 3, 2024 at Burke Mortuary, 2516 North Main Avenue, Newton, NC 28658 with Pastor Freddie Carroll officiating.
A reception will follow at New Bethany Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 106 Eufola Road, Statesville, NC 28677.
In honor of Bill’s extreme love of sharing flowers and plants with others, family requests that you feel free to overwhelm him with God’s beauty.

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with family, friends, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also give family and friends an opportunity to celebrate the person's achievements, share fond memories, and pay tribute to their legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, funeral homes or mortuaries may offer assistance with writing the obituary as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or private memorials.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides a more detailed account of the person's life and accomplishments.
