around her. As a Beal City High cheerleader, 16-year-old Rosie dated a basketball player from rival Weidman High. Two years after graduating as the class of 1951’s salutatorian, she wed her athlete Richard (Dick) Smith and they
began their 70 beautiful years of marriage together. Three years later, they found a new home in AuGres, Michigan, where Dick was hired as a history teacher, basketball, baseball and track coach. She supported them with weekly care packages of “Rose Chips”, which became a coveted commodity amongst the kids’ college friends. Rosie was an avid seamstress and knitter, creating more than an estimated 200 pairs of socks over the years. Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or organizations that the family would like to support.

Who writes an obituary?

The obituary is usually written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should aim to capture the personality and spirit of the person who has passed away.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to write a well-crafted obituary.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the notice and help others remember the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you will typically need to contact the paper's obituary department directly. They will provide you with guidelines on what information to include, as well as any deadlines or word count limits.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows individuals to reflect on their life and legacy.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and accomplishments.
