Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased's life, personality, and accomplishments.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 150-200 words, but it can be longer or shorter depending on the circumstances.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help to make the obituary more personal and celebratory. Be sure to check with the publication or platform for their specific guidelines on photo submissions.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They may have specific requirements for formatting, word count, and deadlines. Be prepared to provide all necessary information and proofread carefully before submitting.

Can I write an obituary myself or do I need professional help?

You can certainly write an obituary yourself if you feel comfortable doing so. However, if you're struggling with the writing process or need guidance on structure and content, consider seeking help from a professional obituary writer or funeral home staff.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help to capture their essence and make the tribute more engaging and relatable.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or complicated relationships involved, it's essential to approach the writing process with tact and discretion. Consider consulting with other family members or friends to ensure that everyone is comfortable with the content.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems that resonated with the deceased can add depth and meaning to the obituary. Choose something that reflects their personality, interests, or values.

What is the purpose of an online obituary?

An online obituary provides a central location for friends and family to gather, share memories, and pay their respects. It also allows people to leave condolences, share stories, and upload photos or videos.

How long does an online obituary remain available?

The duration of an online obituary varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep it active for a few weeks or months, while others may archive it permanently. Be sure to check with the platform for their specific policies.

Can I update an existing obituary?

In most cases, yes! If new information becomes available or errors need to be corrected, you can update the obituary accordingly. Contact the publication or online platform for guidance on their update process.

Is it appropriate to include charitable donations in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory and support a meaningful cause.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Yes! You can still write an obituary as a tribute to someone who passed away years ago. This can be especially meaningful if you're creating a family history or genealogy project.

How do I handle multiple marriages or complicated relationships in an obituary?

Treat each relationship with respect and sensitivity. You may choose to list multiple spouses or partners separately, or acknowledge them collectively as loving companions or devoted partners.

Can I include pets in an obituary?

Absolutely! Pets are often considered beloved family members. You can mention them by name and even include photos if desired.

What is the etiquette for responding to condolences online?

When responding to condolences online, be sincere and heartfelt in your gratitude. Keep your responses brief but meaningful, acknowledging each person's kind words and gestures.

How do I preserve an online obituary as a keepsake?
