Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral program to share the news with family, friends, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for those grieving.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have even written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include details about their life story, achievements, and personality.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Some newspapers may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Absolutely! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise in reflection and introspection. It can also ensure that your life story is told accurately and authentically. Just be sure to store it safely and let your loved ones know where to find it.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, often including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to keep it respectful and tasteful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment (if required).

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes! There are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary, such as Legacy.com, Obituary.com, or FuneralHome.com. These platforms often offer additional features like guestbooks and condolence messages.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may expire after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check with the platform for their policies.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes or lyrics that resonate with the deceased's personality or spirit can add depth and meaning to the tribute. Just be sure to verify copyright permissions if necessary.

What's the best way to announce an unexpected death?

In cases of sudden or unexpected death, it's essential to prioritize sensitivity and compassion when sharing the news with others. Consider reaching out personally to close friends and family before publishing an obituary.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes! Many families prefer donations to a favorite charity or cause in lieu of traditional flowers. Be sure to specify the organization and any relevant details in the obituary.

How do I handle corrections or updates to an obituary?

If you need to make corrections or updates to an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform directly. They'll guide you through their process for making changes.

Can I republish an old obituary for a anniversary or special occasion?

Yes! Republishing an old obituary can be a meaningful way to commemorate a special occasion or anniversary. Check with the original publication or platform for their policies on republication.

Absolutely! Personal stories and anecdotes can bring warmth and humanity to the tribute, making it feel more authentic and relatable.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Triple-check facts like dates, names, and spellings to ensure accuracy. You may also want to consult with other family members or friends to verify details.
