William M. Horn - January 07, 1930 - February 20, 2022

Departed: 02/20/2022 (Rison)
Obituary Preview: William “Bill” Horn, age 92, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022. He was born January 7, 1930 in Marion, Texas. He grew up the oldest of five brothers, as a youth he spent his time helping the family which included a lot of cotton picking. The family lived in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. He served in the United States Navy in the Korean War. In the Navy he found his love of boxing. Which he loved to always watch on TV if he could find a good match. He met a girl on Main Street in Pine Bluff named Mary Jane who stole his heart and the rest was history! They lived on a ranch in Wyoming when first married and returned to Pine Bluff where eventually Bill would work for the Arsenal as a pipe fitter until retirement. Bill was a Native American and a member of the Choctaw Apache Tribe of Ebarb in Zwolle, Louisiana. He enjoyed participating in Pow-Wows and was a very fine straight dancer. He and his wife Mary traveled doing craft shows which showcased his work as a silver smith including handmade jewelry and hers with pine needle baskets, corn shuck dolls, and beadwork. Bill had a love for music beyond most. He could also play most instruments he wanted. From harmonica, violin, guitar, mandolin, dobro, or sax. He loved a good “pickin” session. Bill loved fishing and was even famous for the 50 pound flathead he caught once out of the river and was featured on Channel 7 news. So this really was a “true” fishing story and it was “that big.”
Finally the greatest thing about Bill Horn was his faith. He was a long time member of Whiteville Missionary Baptist church. He was a godly example of a Christian man who loved his family and his friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Horn.
Survivors include one brother, George Horn of White Hall, one daughter, Marianne Horn of Sheridan, one son, Barry Horn of Pine Bluff, a granddaughter, Andrea Duncan of White Hall, and 4 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2022 at Brown Cemetery in Pine Bluff.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They can help friends and family members plan to attend funeral services, send condolences, and share memories of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may offer assistance with writing the obituary as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or accomplishments. It may also include details about funeral services, memorial donations, and other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 100-200 words, but it can be longer or shorter depending on your needs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful to readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. You may need to provide the written obituary text, along with payment for the publication fee. Be sure to ask about any specific requirements or restrictions they may have.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure their story is told accurately and authentically. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper, online platform, or funeral home. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a single publication.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow edits or corrections within a certain timeframe, while others may not permit changes once it's gone live. Be sure to check their policies before submitting your obituary.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the passing of your loved one, you can opt for a private obituary or limit its distribution to only close family and friends. Funeral homes or online platforms may offer private posting options or password-protected access.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of life, so feel free to inject some personality and humor into the writing. Share stories that showcase the person's character, quirks, or accomplishments that made them unique.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues surrounding the person's death or personal life, it's essential to approach the topic with tact and respect. Consider consulting with family members or close friends before deciding what information to include or omit.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest memorial donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory. Be sure to include details about the charity or fund, as well as any relevant instructions for donors.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the online platform or funeral home website. Some may keep the obituary available indefinitely, while others may remove it after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check their policies before posting.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to reprint an obituary on a special anniversary or occasion, you may need permission from the original publisher. Check their reprint policies before proceeding.

What if there are errors in the published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately if you notice any mistakes. They may be able to correct the error online or issue a correction notice in subsequent print editions.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn can be effective ways to share news of a loved one's passing with a wider audience. You can share a link to the online obituary or post a summary with relevant details.

How do I handle out-of-town guests attending funeral services?

If you're expecting visitors from afar, consider including travel and accommodation information in the obituary or on a separate webpage. This can help guests plan their trip and make necessary arrangements.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems that resonate with the person's spirit or personality can add depth and meaning to the obituary. Just be mindful of copyright laws if using copyrighted material.

What if I'm unsure about what to write in an obituary?

DON'T worry! Writing an obituary can be overwhelming. Consider enlisting help from family members, friends, or even a professional writer. You can also look up examples online for inspiration and guidance.

Can I create a digital archive of my loved one's life?

Yes! Online platforms like memorial websites or digital archives allow you to collect memories, photos, stories, and other mementos in one place. This can become a treasured keepsake for years to come.

How do I cope with grief after writing an obituary?

Losing a loved one is never easy. Remember that grief is a journey, and it's okay to take your time processing emotions. Reach out to support groups, counseling services, or trusted friends and family for help navigating this difficult time.
