Cheryl D. Karlin - August 29, 1945 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (Buffalo Grove)
Obituary Preview: Surrounded by her family, Cheryl (Daneman) Karlin passed away on April 28, 2024, after a 2 ½ year struggle with cancer. Mom, and Gigi, as she was affectionately referred to, was an artist and a schooled interior designer who could draw the blueprints and designs for the most beautifully created and elegant homes and spaces one could ever experience. Born in Dayton, Ohio, to Alfred Daneman and Helen Daneman Pesky, Mom had a difficult upbringing, losing her father when she was only 12 years old. Always missing and longing for her dad, she built a life with her children, Chad Daneman Weprin and Brooke Avery (Weprin) Anderson, first in Ohio, and then she had the courage, as a single mother of two under 30 years of age, to relocate her and her children to Chicago, IL, where she worked at Montgomery Ward in search of a better life. Being the single mother to two young children was unusual in the 1970s, but she persevered and found happiness and, finally, love with Gary Karlin (1934-2021). Dad/Papa (Gary) and Mom/Gigi married in 1978, and with this marriage brought three additional children, David Karlin (1957-2019), Jody Mack, and Paige (Karlin) Dioguardi. Never one to use the term “step”, Mom helped raise a much younger Paige who she always loved and felt was her own daughter and her own blood. At times funny and gregarious and at other stoic and serious, Mom only ever wanted her children and grandchildren to be happy. She surrounded her four granddaughters (Avery, Karlin, Lily, and Mimi) with the love of art, design, Judaism, and warmth. She will be missed by all, including her daughter-in-law, Kim Weprin, and sons-in-law, Brian Dioguardi and Marc Anderson. She is survived by her two sisters, Marilyn Nolan, and Susan Hoskins. Contributions would be appreciated to JourneyCare Hospice, Pepper Family Hospice CareCenter, 405 N. Lake Zurich Rd., Barrington, IL 60010.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help facilitate condolences, funeral arrangements, and memorial services, and often become a cherished keepsake for loved ones.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to notify others of a person's passing and provide details about their life, such as their accomplishments, interests, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to celebrate their life and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. However, some funeral homes or obituary writers may offer assistance in crafting the notice.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and condolences.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise yet informative, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the notice and celebrate the deceased's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. You can usually find this information on their website or by calling their office.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure their life story is told accurately and with their own voice. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed notice that provides additional information about the deceased's life.

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Online obituaries are often published immediately or within a few hours, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including personal stories or humorous moments can help capture the deceased's personality and spirit, making the obituary more engaging and memorable.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer to keep the funeral private, you can still publish an obituary without including details about the service. Instead, you might mention that a private ceremony will be held or that memorial donations can be made in lieu of flowers.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Including meaningful quotes or song lyrics can add depth and emotion to the obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased's personality or spirit.
