Barbara May Coon - March 22, 1932 - June 08, 2022

Departed: 06/08/2022 (Westerly)
Obituary Preview: Barbara May (Ornberg) Hutchins-Coon, 90, of Pawcatuck, CT passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at The Westerly Hospital. She was the loving wife of George R. Coon and previously to the late Robert Hutchins. Born in Westerly, RI on March 22, 1933, she was the daughter of the late William and Bertha (Pendleton) Ornberg. Barbara grew up with her parents on Ninigret Drive near the Quonnie Life Saving Station. In 1938 at the age of 5, a massive hurricane struck trapping her family on the dunes in Quonnie forcing them to cling to the brush while their home floated away. By a miracle, they survived and moved to Old Woody Hill Rd in Dunn’s Corner. Barbara shared her life there with her family and graduated from Westerly High School in 1951. A few years after graduating, she met and married her husband Robert Hutchins in 1954. Together they enjoyed cooking and selling her breads, cookies, pies and cakes. She did some catering for events like weddings and birthday parties with her specialty of frosting cake flowers. Her hobbies evolved into crafts such as making and selling quilts out of her home. She continued this through her Teddy Bear Ministry at the First Baptist Church of Quonochontaug where she crocheted bears for those in need. Her crocheting continued in items for the Watch Hill Nursing Home, baby items for the RI Hospital along with chemo hats for patients of a local physician and hats for schools. She even went the extra mile to use any left-over yarn for Kitty Blankets for the Westerly Animal Rescue. She was active in her faith and church serving as a deacon and singing in the choir and when she had a little free time, she would read. After years in Quonnie, they retired to Florida in 1994. Unfortunately, Robert passed in 1999 and Barbara came back to RI. Another chapter in her life began when she met and married George Coon in 2000 and they settled in Pawcatuck, CT. George and Barbara enjoyed traveling for car shows and showing off his 1937 Ford Coupe. They also spent time going camping and above all else, tried to live their life to the fullest with Barbara’s creed being “A merry heart doeth well”. A true statement and testament to her life that got her through many bumps in the road. Most importantly, she loved her family. She leaves her husband and companion of 23 years George; 3 step-children Cheryl Gagnon, Tom Coon and Kelly Coon-Lloyd; granddaughters Hannah Oakland and Jennifer and husband Joel; 3 great-grandchildren along with a niece and cousins. She was preceded in death by her children Donna and Stephen along with a sister Brenda and brothers Robert and William. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Richard M. Jones, - March 30, 1941 - May 21, 2022

Departed: 05/21/2022 (Westerly)
Obituary Preview: Richard Michael Jones III, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Saturday, May 21 surrounded by his loving family, after suffering a stroke. Richard was born on March 30, 1941 in New Haven, the son of Richard Michael Jones II and Mary Petroskey Jones. He graduated from Notre Dame High School, the University of South Carolina, and earned a PhD in History from the City University of New York, writing a 400 page thesis on whaling in Stonington that has been used for exhibits at the Mystic Aquarium. Richard worked for several years as an adjunct professor of history and then for thirty years at Amtrak, ten in the track division, where he eventually became foreman, and then for twenty years as a conductor. Coworkers nicknamed him “The Professor” because of his PhD, although he was always very unassuming about his education with his friends on the railroad, where he was extremely well-liked. Family members recall his incredible work ethic on the job, often leaving the house at all hours of the night on very little sleep in order to put four children through Catholic school and college. Richard met his beloved wife Martha while working a summer job at a golf course in Delaware, where she was attending nursing school. They moved to the Westerly area so Richard could research his PhD in Stonington, and they both fell in love with the Westerly beaches. Summer days were spent at the beach as often as possible, usually Watch Hill. He would drop his family off at one end of the beach and then park the car in town and walk back to them, his tall frame and modest walk visible almost the whole length of the beach, even on crowded days. When it wasn’t beach season, he would take his family hiking or to a lake or pond almost every weekend when they were growing up, or on one of their many annual vacations. After retirement he volunteered for the Audubon Society and the Nature Conservancy, cleaning local trails so that others could enjoy them. Listeners to WCNI New London will surely know Richard from his Sunday radio show, “Dr. J: The World’s Oldest Teenager” where he would play an incredible range of music, from indie, country, early rock n’roll, blues, folk, and everything in-between. His favorite group was The Rolling Stones, who he once referred to in a film review (he also wrote film reviews) as “the musical geniuses of the 20th century.” In addition to his many other interests, hobbies and talents he was an avid sports fan, first and foremost of the New York Football Giants, as well as the Boston Celtics, (who he saw win several championships in person), the San Francisco Giants, the Boston Red Sox, and Anyone playing against the Yankees. He was also a proud “yellow dog Democrat”, who would often write letters to the editor at The Westerly Sun in support of the liberal and progressive causes he believed in, always diligently supported with citations, statistics, and quotes from reputable sources. The Jones family would like to thank Doctor Harwood, Doctor Dotolo, and especially Doctor Marzilli for their wonderful care of Richard in his later years. They would also like to thank the Westerly Ambulance Corps and the staffs at Westerly Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital for their kind and compassionate care of Richard on his final day. His family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, May 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home at 121 Main Street in Westerly, RI. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial for Richard at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 27th at St. Pius X Church 44 Elm St, Westerly, RI followed by a procession and burial at Palmer Cemetery, located at 9 Stanton Lane, Preston, CT. Reception details to follow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and the community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also give friends and acquaintances an opportunity to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or crematorium. In some instances, a close friend or colleague may be asked to write the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details. It may also include hobbies, interests, achievements, and other personal characteristics that celebrate the person's life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or private publications.

Can I include photos or other media in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some print publications allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements to enhance the tribute. These can help bring the person's story to life and provide a more personal touch.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some may have online forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary, while others may require you to visit their office in person.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online sites offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge per line or word. Be sure to ask about pricing when submitting your obituary.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow edits or updates for a limited time after initial publication, while others may not permit changes once it's gone live. It's essential to review the obituary carefully before submission to ensure accuracy.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce your loved one's passing, you can opt for a private obituary or create a memorial page on a private website. This allows you to share information with close friends and family while maintaining privacy.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary as part of their end-of-life planning. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words. However, it's essential to discuss this with your loved ones and ensure they're aware of your wishes.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can search online archives of newspapers and websites that specialize in collecting obituaries. Many libraries also maintain archives of local newspapers that can be searched in person or through interlibrary loan programs.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you've found an old obituary that you'd like to republish, check with the original publication or copyright holder for permission. You may need to obtain permission from the author or publisher before sharing it again.

What if there's an error in the obituary?

If you notice an error in an obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately. They will work with you to correct the mistake as soon as possible.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This allows friends and acquaintances to make a meaningful contribution in memory of their loved one.

How do I handle condolences and messages from strangers?

If you're receiving condolences from people you don't know personally, it's essential to prioritize your emotional well-being. You can respond with a simple thank-you note or message, but don't feel obligated to engage in lengthy conversations.

What if I'm struggling with grief after writing an obituary?

Losing a loved one can be incredibly difficult. If you're finding it challenging to cope with your emotions after writing an obituary, consider reaching out to a mental health professional, support group, or trusted friend or family member for guidance and support.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Yes, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can create a post with the obituary text and link to any online memorials or fundraising pages.

How long should I wait before sharing an obituary on social media?

It's generally recommended to wait until immediate family members have been notified and had time to process their emotions before sharing an obituary on social media. This helps avoid unintentionally breaking the news to someone who hasn't yet been informed.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber affairs. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate your loved one's personality and make the tribute more engaging.

What if I'm unsure about what to include in an obituary?

If you're struggling with what information to include in an obituary, consider speaking with a funeral director, counselor, or trusted friend or family member for guidance. They can help you determine what details will best honor your loved one's life.

Can I create a digital archive of my loved one's life?

Yes! Digital archives can be created using online platforms like memory books, timelines, or scrapbooks. These allow you to collect photos, stories, and mementos that celebrate your loved one's life and legacy.

How do I ensure my loved one's legacy lives on?

Celebrate their life by sharing stories, creating memorials, and continuing their passions or charitable endeavors. You can also establish scholarships, foundations, or other initiatives that perpetuate their values and impact.
