Dennis Franz - July 14, 1946 - March 23, 2024

Departed: 03/23/2024 (Villa Park)
Obituary Preview: Dennis G. Franz, age 77, of Villa Park, passed away on March 23rd at Edward Hospital in Naperville.
He was the proud husband of his high school sweetheart, the late Diane nee Kotwasinski, for 45 years; the loving father of Dennis (Lori) Franz, Denise (Patrick) Egan, and Daniel Franz; adored Papa of Jessica (Nate) Clowe, Meagan Franz, Christopher Franz, Joseph Egan, Jacob Egan, and Johnathan Egan; Great-Papa of Kyra and Kaci; and was loved dearly by many nieces and nephews.
It cannot be overstated how proud he was to have married his high school sweetheart, Diane. The two loved to travel together and kept life entertaining for the family. Diane was always ready to put out any fires, both metaphorically and literally speaking, whenever Dennis accidentally lit something on fire on account of his being very fire prone.
His favored past-times included going out to eat, “putzin’ around,” and telling everyone how to fix stuff at least three times whether he was asked to or not. Regardless of the event, Dennis absolutely needed to leave by 8:00 PM. And it should be known that he never napped – he just rested his eyes while everyone placed bets on whether or not Papa would startle himself awake by careening head-first into the coffee table.
More than anything, Dennis truly loved and excelled at being a grandpa. It was widely known that his grandkids would tattle on him in a heartbeat, which led to him referring to them all as his “stool pigeons”. His grandchildren lit up his life beyond words. He would treat all his granddaughters like princesses, and his grandsons were his best buddies.
Dennis was the type of person who had a nickname for everyone and would share a beer with anyone. He had an unrivaled sense of humor and was an incredibly generous person which is what made him the Papa that he was.
The family asks that, when you’re out to eat at your favorite restaurant, raise a glass to Papa.
Please omit flowers.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to inform others of a person's passing and provide details about their life, achievements, and legacy. It also serves as a way to announce funeral or memorial service arrangements and invite others to pay their respects.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should be someone who knew the deceased well and can provide an accurate and heartfelt tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include a photo, quotes, or other personal touches.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. A longer obituary can provide more detail and insight into the deceased's life, while a shorter one may focus on the essentials.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the deceased. Check with the publication for their specific guidelines on photo submissions.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Most newspapers and online platforms have a dedicated section for submitting obituaries. You can usually find this information on their website or by contacting their customer service department directly. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only essential information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional context and biographical information.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites like Ancestry.com or Newspapers.com. Local libraries or historical societies may also maintain archives of past newspapers and obituaries.

Can I edit or correct an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections can be made if errors are reported promptly. However, significant changes or rewrites may not be possible once an obituary has been published. Check with the publication for their policies on corrections and revisions.

What is a memorial page or online tribute?

How do I create a memorial page or online tribute?

You can create a memorial page through online platforms like Legacy.com, Tributes.com, or Facebook Memorials. These services usually provide templates and guidance to help you build a personalized tribute.

Can I include humor or lighthearted moments in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also okay to inject some humor or personality into the writing. This can help celebrate the deceased's spirit and make the tribute more engaging for readers.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to emotional reasons, consider enlisting the help of a friend, family member, or professional writer. They can assist you in crafting a fitting tribute while you focus on coping with your loss.

Can I include charitable donations or memorials in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorials in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased's memory and support a cause they cared about.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private aspects of the deceased's life that you'd rather not disclose publicly, it's perfectly okay to omit them from the obituary. Focus on sharing positive memories and accomplishments that celebrate their life.

Can I use social media to share an obituary or memorialize someone?

Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram can be effective ways to share news of a passing and connect with others who are grieving. You can also create digital memorials or share memories using hashtags related to the deceased.

How long does it take for an online obituary to be published?

The time it takes for an online obituary to be published varies depending on the platform and editorial process. Some sites may publish immediately upon submission, while others may take several hours or days for review and approval.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes! If you want to republish an obituary on a special anniversary or occasion, check with the original publication for their policies on reprints or republication. You may need permission from the copyright holder or pay a reprint fee.
