Obituary Preview: David C. Black, Age 90, of Emmaus PA, passed away on 19 April, 2024 at his home. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Russell L and Mildred R (Campbell) Black, and the husband of Eleanor (Milham) Black, with whom he celebrated 55 years of marriage before her passing in Oct 2011.
David graduated from Allentown High School in 1951 and Penn State University in 1955. He also received a Master’s Degree from Columbia University in 1961. After college, he worked for Colgate Palmolive International for 6 years as an Industrial Engineer. He then was hired by M&M/Mars and worked for them in New Jersey, Holland, Australia, and Texas, becoming the Corporate Industrial Engineering Director in their National office before retiring in 1992 after 31 years with the company.
After retiring, he and his wife relocated to the Allentown area where they enjoyed traveling and visiting their grandchildren. He also had an avid interest in real estate and obtained several rental dwellings and second homes in Texas, North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Breckenridge, CO where he liked to snow ski every year.
After his wife’s passing in 2011, David developed a close relationship with a long-time friend, Marion McHugh, and they enjoyed vacationing and spending time together until the end.
He attended Asbury United Methodist Church in Allentown and will be remembered by his family as a loving role model who loved to garden and could fix anything.
David will be lovingly remembered by his two sons, William and his wife Marian of Coppell Texas, and Thomas and his wife Kerrie of Naperville, IL, and 6 grandchildren: Michael, Elizabeth, David, Karaline, Audrey, and Russell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Allentown, 1533 Springhouse Road, Allentown, PA, 18104. A calling period for family and friends will be held from 9-11 AM on April 25 at the church. Interment to follow at Grandview Cemetery in Allentown.

Obituary Preview: Anita C. Shannahan, 90, of Bethlehem, died Friday April 19, 2024, at her residence in Kirkland Village. She was the wife of the late Thomas D. Shannahan, Jr. She was born in Tarrytown, NY, and was a daughter of the late Douglas A. and Mabel (Lunn) Calkins.
Anita was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem where she served as a Deacon. She worked for over 22 years at Hanover Elementary School teaching 5th grade before retiring. Anita volunteered her time, working at the Burnside Plantation and with Historic Bethlehem. She was an avid tennis and bridge player and loved poetry and gardening.
Surviving are her daughter Carol A. Shannahan, son Thomas D. Shannahan, III and wife Cheryl, grandson Ryan Thomas Shannahan and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
A memorial service will be held at 12pm Friday April 26, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church, 2344 Center St, Bethlehem, PA. 18017.

Merkel and long-time companion of the late Joseph Mingora. Born in Emmaus, she was a daughter of the late Claude Nonnemacher and Gertrude (Thomas) Duracinsky and stepfather Joe Duracinsky.
Darlene was a member of St. John’s U.C.C. Howertown for many years. After graduating from Catasauqua High School, she went to work, retiring as a head teller from Bank of America.
Surviving are her sons Kerry Merkel and wife Drena, Keith Merkel and Kevin Merkel; 9 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 2 great great granddaughters; brother-in-law Donald and wife Lorraine Merkel, sister-in-law Barbara Merkel, sister-in-law Grace Duracinsky, ½ sister Linda Christman and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother Joseph Duracinsky, Jr.

Beverly worked a variety of jobs throughout her life, but was most proud of her time as a Assistant Teacher at Little People Daycare. She enjoyed arts and crafts and loved all animals.
Above all she was a loving wife, sister and mother and will be missed.
Surviving are her daughter Tina Schoeneberger and husband Richard, Jr.; sister Arlene Kamerzel and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Charles Sukal.
Her viewing will be held from 9:30-11am, Thursday April 18, 2024, at Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc., 234 Walnut St. Catasauqua, 18032. Funeral services will be held at 11am Thursday at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Whitehall.

Fern Mae Smale Serfass - March 30, 1927 - April 03, 2024

Obituary Preview: On April 3, 2024, Fern Mae Smale Serfass, aged 97 years, quietly passed away. Fern was born on 3/30/1927 to Florence Burger Smale and Arlington Smale. As a child raised in her grandparents’ General Store, Fern was kept busy learning needlework, embroidery, crocheting, and (later) quilting. She attended Polk HS and then graduated from Churchman’s Business College in Easton, PA.
After her marriage to Stanley Serfass, Fern worked as private secretary to Mr. Churchman, Kresgeville Manufacturing Co., retiring as librarian secretary from Pleasant Valley HS. During this time she also raised her two children, Jean and Stan.
Fern devoted herself to quilting, finishing at least 101 quilts in her lifetime. This endeavor got the attention of local newspapers in 2001 when her talents were acknowledged. Fern’s favorite quilt is the “Crazy Quilt” and believing that every quilt has a story to tell.
Fern was very fond of her circle of close friends and family, and delighted in card games, assisting at her church, summers in Ontario and winters in Florida.
Fern was pre-deceased by her husband, Stanley Serfass. She is survived by her daughter Jean (Terry) Theman, son Stan (Amy) Serfass, grandchildren Jennifer Kaufmann, Chris Tworkowsky (Tasha), Kate Tworkowsky, and great grandchildren Tanner, Emory and Hank.
There will be a calling period on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Salem St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 138 Trach Rd, Kresgeville, PA. 18333 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. A funeral service of remembrance will follow in the church at 12 pm with a reception to follow.

Obituary Preview: Lewis C. Newhard, 82 of Northampton, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2024, at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Muhlenberg. Born in Catasauqua, he was the son of Carl Hoffman and June Moreland.
He was the partner of Alice K. Wolf and shared 30 years together. Lewis was a Sargeant and served honorably in the US Navy in Vietnam. He was a technician at Lucent Technologies for 41 years before retiring in 2001.
He was a member of Delaware Valley Historic Radio Club (DVHRC)for many years. He was a longtime member of The American Legion for 54 years.
Lewis loved to repair antique radios. His love for radios commenced when he worked in a radio shop after school. He started the Kutztown Radio show with several of his friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He will be lovingly remember by his partner, Alice K. Wolf, daughter, Suzanne Grischott, half brother Al Row and fur babies Sly and Katie.
A calling period will be held on Friday, March 29, 2024, from 09:30-10:00 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Whitehall. A graveside funeral service officiated by Pastor Stephen Emick will commence at 10:00 a.m.

Obituary Preview: Samuel J. Pantoni, 83, of Whitehall, PA. formally of Summit Hill, PA. passed away peacefully Monday, March 18, 2024, at St. Luke’s Hospice Bethlehem, PA.
He was the son of the late Amedio and Angelina (Rutch) Pantoni. He was the husband of Nancy (Viti) Pantoni with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
Sam was a 1958 graduate of Marian Catholic High School. He worked for Mack Trucks Allentown, PA. for 30 years before retiring in 1988, as a committee man for UAW677. Sam was an avid sports fan and was a basketball coach for CYO league at St. Lawrence School in Catasauqua, PA. He was a lifetime member of the Fullerton Fire Company, a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Men of Malvern. In addition, Sam was an avid singer. He sang at many weddings and funerals throughout the valley. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving along with his wife Nancy are his son Samuel A. Pantoni and wife Cherylanne of Whitehall, two grandchildren, Brittany, and Zachary Pantoni, one step-grandson, four step-great-grandchildren, brothers Amedio Pantoni and Anthony Pantoni and wife Josephine Pantoni and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard and sister, Constance (Pantoni) Kistler.

Arlene D. Sticher - February 23, 1928 - March 03, 2024

Obituary Preview: Arlene Sticher celebrated her 96th birthday on February 23nd surrounded by friends and family and her 76th wedding anniversary to the “love her life”, Jim Sticher, on February 28th. She died on March 3rd at the Villa at Fellowship Community with Jim by her side.
Arlene was an extraordinary woman. She was a division manager of the fashion departments at Sears for 37 years. Her true gift was to be a comfort to others. She touched lives in her years at Seibert EC Church in the neighborhood of Law Street in Allentown until 1967, in her life at Helfrich Springs Apartments, her life at York Street in Catasauqua, and finally her life at Fellowship Community in Brunner Court. Goodness knows how many people were given recipes, jewelry, and loving gifts from Arlene.
Arlene exemplifies a superwoman who could be a good wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and career person. In her words, “When I am gone, release me. Let me go. I gave you my love. You can only guess how much you gave me in happiness”.
Surviving are her husband, Jim at Fellowship Community; daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Linda and Pete Palmo of Macungie; Grandson Michael Lowry with his wife Monika of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; step-grandson, Peter Palmo of Beallsville, PA., and two great grandsons, Matthew and Christopher Lowry. Also surviving is her sister, Mary Lou Hodes, of Fellowship Community and several nieces and nephews.

Frederick C. "Fred" Oswald - May 24, 1935 - March 03, 2024

Obituary Preview: Frederick “Fred” Oswald, 88 died peacefully Sunday evening, March 3 at Lehigh Valley Hospital. He was the husband of the late Kathryn “Betty” Oswald with whom he shared 44 years of marriage prior to her passing in 2011. Born in Catasauqua, he was the son of the late Miriam and Claude Oswald.
He worked for many years at the former Atlas Powder Company, Reynolds as well as Bethlehem Steel. An avid Penn State Football fan and alumnus, he was a season ticket holder for four decades. A graduate of Catasauqua High School, he was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and a resident of Fellowship Community. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his stepsons George Yanoshik, Jr. of Phoenixville, David Yanoshik of Bethlehem Township, sister Marjorie Kunkle and brother Douglas Oswald.
There will be a 12 pm graveside funeral service officiated by Pastor Phil Yerrington on Friday, March 8, 2024. Arlington Memorial Park, Whitehall, PA.

Obituary Preview: Robert Lee Ross, 83, of Coplay went to be with the Lord Sunday March 3 ,2024. He was the loving husband of Sylvia Rae Ross and together celebrated 63 years of marriage. Born in West Liberty, OH, he was a son of the late Oliver E. and Stella M. (Detwiler) Ross.
Robert had a deep abiding faith in his Lord Jesus Christ from childhood, which he imparted to his children and grandchildren. He attended Whitehall Bible Fellowship Church for many years. Throughout the years, Robert was always active with music in the church, playing guitar and singing.
He worked for GE, Black & Decker and eventually retired as a Psyche Aid from the former Allentown State Hospital. After retirement, he volunteered at the Phoebe Home for several years.
Surviving along with his wife Sylvia are his sons Randall Ross and wife Janet, Brian Ross, daughter Pamela Snyder and husband Dale, granddaughters Beth Ross, and Cait McAlister and husband Kyle; siblings; Dorothy Smith; Jeannine Pontrelli, Anne Ross and Kenneth Ross.

Sharon was a graduate of Whitehall High School and Northampton Community College. Sharon worked as a graphic artist for a variety of businesses, most recently for Straight Arrow Products. She loved music and dancing and her many trips to Cape Hatteras, NC. Sharon made the most delicious chocolate holiday candy. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Surviving along with her husband Charles, are her son Zachary Stine and his wife Elizabeth, and daughter Jade Edwards and her husband Nigel, siblings; Frank Schaller, Garry Schaller; David Schaller and Nancy Cappolella; grandchildren Avery and Julia Stine, Imogen and Oliver Edwards and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Janet Buss.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, from 4-8 p.m. at the Jednota Club, 1223 Fifth Street in Catasauqua.

Formally of North Catasauqua, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm Kocher and Nora (Eastman) Kocher.
She was the wife of the late Tilghman H. Acker who passed away in 1979.
Shirley was a graduate of Allentown High School. She was a member of the former Grace Methodist Church in North Catasauqua.
She was an assembler for General Electric where she retired in 1985 after 35 years of service.
Shirley was kind and always had a smile on her face. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish fond memories include her nephews William Kocher and his wife Peggy; Arthur Acker and wife Diane and Larry Acker; niece Cheryl Browning and husband Dean. She was predeceased by brother William and sister Marjorie.

Mildred Arlene Genevese - January 12, 1936 - February 18, 2024

Obituary Preview: Mildred Arlene (Kulp) Genevese, 88, of Allentown, passed away at Lehigh Valley Hospital on Sunday, February 18, 2024. Mildred was married for 62 years to Albert Genevese before his passing in 2021. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Cecelia (Groller) Kulp.
Mildred worked at Two Guys and as a cafeteria worker in the Catasauqua School District before retirement. Her first love was the Phillies and also was a Sixers and Michigan fan. She enjoyed baking, especially her molasses cookies at Christmas, making her chocolate peanut butter eggs at Easter, and cooking her filling for Thanksgiving, as well as making her excellent lasagna. She always had food available when guests visited. She also enjoyed attending her grandchildren's school and sporting events.
Surviving are her children Carol (Genevese) Helman and husband Andy; Kevin Genevese and wife Donna; and Tina (Genevese) Alamarat; 5 grandchildren Amanda Helman, Melissa Helman, Mark Helman, Anthony Genevese(Kaitlyn) and Aaron Genevese(Julie); sister Marie Lower and husband William Lower. She was preceded in death by brothers Richard Kulp and Robert Kulp and sisters Marion Meckes, Elsie Clark, and Pearl Schaffer.

She was the wife of Joseph C. Gerhard with whom she shared 65 years of marriage. Barbara earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from St. Agnes School Of Nursing in 1957. She was a Registered Nurse in the recovery room at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Barbara had many hobbies and passions. She loved sports. She was an avid Phillies and 76’s fan; she loved animals and gave donations to the ASPCA. She loved sunflowers and daisies and enjoyed the beach. She loved reading and baking but above all loved her family most. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Surviving along with her husband Joseph C. Gerhard are, daughter JoLynn Baumer and granddaughter Lauren Fragnito.

Michael retired from Lehigh University, where he worked as a systems analyst for over 20 years. When he wasn’t working, Michael loved spending time bicycling on the D & L Trail.

He played softball in West Catty for many years and was actively involved in the sporting activities of his grandchildren.
He was a great husband, father and Poppy and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish fond memories include his wife, Connie; son Thomas R. Moll, II, daughter Julie A. Kline Gualano and husband Matthew Jr.; brothers Doug J. Moll and Dale Moll; sister in law, Debra Moll; grandchildren; Caleb Ethan, Lily Eden and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his brother John Moll.

Raysely, 81, of North Catasauqua, passed away on January 16, 2024, at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Muhlenberg. Born in West Catasauqua, he was the son of the late Anthony M. and Erma L. (Eberts) Raysely. He was the husband of Susan A. (Lorenz) Raysely with whom he shared over 50 years together.
He was a laborer in the construction field and automotive industry for his entire life. Above all, he loved his family most and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Ray was an active member and incredibly involved in many social clubs in the Lehigh Valley.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Susan, daughter, Diane Albright and husband Joseph, brother, Anthony Raysely and wife Margie, sister in-law, Annie Carpenter; grandchildren; Matthew Raysely, Amber Albright and fiancée Christopher Goeddertz, and Michael Albright; greatgrandchildren, Jackson, and Kenzie. He was predeceased by his daughter, Lorraine, his brother, John and sister, Joanne. His furry friends at home, Missy, Hannah and Bailey will miss him.
A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, January 22, 2024, from 12-1 pm at Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc., 234 Walnut St., Catasauqua, PA.18032. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm in the parlor.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Sons: Richard Moser, Jr. of Allentown; Late Russell Moser of Catasauqua. He loved his 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Brothers: Late Delbert Moser; Gene and his wife Eileen Moser of Catasauqua. Sister: Sandra and her husband Dennis Reppert of Allentown. His Dog: his late faithful companion, Mollie.
At Richard’s request, a private service will be held.

After graduating from Catasauqua High School, he enlisted in the US Navy from 1960-1966. He received an Honorable Discharge, went on to work at the Phoenix Forging Company in Catasauqua, retired from Phoenix, he worked part-time for Giant, in Whitehall.
On September 12, 1964, he married Carol (Finley). They had three children: Son Scott Holmes of North Catasauqua, Daughter Suzanne Dankel (Jason) of Bethlehem, and estranged daughter Shellie Fritchman. He was also the loving grandfather of two grandchildren: Anthony Brinkley (Jenarosa), and Breonna Brinkley all of Coplay. Also survived by his loving nephews, great nephews and great nieces. Ken was preceded in death by his son Mark Holmes and his brother Douglas Holmes.
He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He never missed an event any one of his children or grandchildren were in. He loved spending time with his family and was his grandson and granddaughter’s biggest fan. He was a Scoutmaster for Boys Scouts Troop 51 for many years. He was a lifelong member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Whitehall, PA.

She loved reading mystery books and days on the beach.

Max was always helping others and very giving of her talents. Her greatest achievement with her creative endeavors was through her membership in the Decorative Painting Society. Max earned the honor of having a hand painted Christmas ornament hung on the White House Christmas tree and an invitation to lunch with First Lady Laura Bush.
Mary was active in many groups in Catasauqua including the Catasauqua Historic Society and Catasauqua Area Showcase Theater to name a few. She was happiest teaching others ceramics, crocheting, knitting, and painting. Above all she was devoted to her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother.

Bert was a parishioner at St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church. He was an avid sports fan. He loved the NY Yankees, golf, football, and handball. He loved Frank Sinatra but above all he loved his family.
He was awarded the Brey Brennan Award for Outstanding City Athlete of Allentown. He was a lifetime member of the Fullerton Fire Hall. Bert was a former president of the Allentown Italian Club. He was a long time member of the Jewish Community Center as well as many social clubs in the Lehigh Valley.
Bert was kind, gregarious and genuine. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish fond memories include his loving wife: Louise D. Roma; sons: Michael “Mickey” Roma of Allentown and family, Joseph Roma of San Diego, CA and family, and daughter: Tina Roma Fisher of Whitehall and family; and grandsons: Benjamin of Hampton, VA; Mason of Philadelphia; and Daniel of Whitehall. He was predeceased by his two brothers, James, and Peter Roma.
