Gabriel Brian Martin - January 20, 2022 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Martinsburg)
Obituary Preview: Gabriel Brian Martin (January 20, 2022 - April 20, 2024)
Gabriel (Gabe) was born to Sara Martin in Martinsburg WV on Jan 20, 2022. He was a miracle baby and an immediate blessing to her and her family.
Gabe was a happy adventurer, a lover of animals, a world-class cuddler, Mickey Mouse devotee, dinosaur lassoer, a rascal at times, and the owner of one of the most infectious giggles that anyone has heard. Gabe was a very smart boy and loved to read books to be both entertained and learn. He was also a great eater and often ate his vegetables before ever getting to the rest of his dinner.
The family of two was expanded as Sara brought Richard Marsh into the family. Sara (momma) and Richard (poppy) loved and blessed Gabe's life as much as he blessed theirs. Gabe is truly loved and will never stop being loved and cherished by his momma and poppy.
The lives Gabe has blessed are too many to list. He was adored by all who had the good fortune of meeting him. He was not a shy boy and did a great job of turning everyone into a friend, especially his many cousins.
Gabe suffered a tragic accident on April 12. He received initial care at WVU East Medical Center by their all-star staff. He was quickly stabilized, and life flighted to Children’s National Medical Hospital in D.C. where he was not only treated but cared for, adopted, and loved along with his momma and poppy by their team in the PICU. The level of professionalism and tender care shown will never be forgotten by his family and extended family.
The staff at Children’s National arranged to grant a big wish that Sara had expressed upon learning that Gabe would not be leaving the hospital. On April 17th, immediate family was able to join Sara, Richard, and Gabe to witness a ring and vows ceremony. What a blessing it was to allow handsome Gabe, in his dinosaur tie, to be a part of that ceremony. There is no doubt that he was able to hear his mother and dad express their love and devotion to each other, knowing they can all be joined together forever.
Gabes' last miracle and act as a superhero was to be an organ donor. The desire was to give the gift of life allowing other kids to be able to go home to their family while Gabe went home to be with his loving Father in Heaven, surrounded by dear loved ones that have gone on before. IT did not work out that way as his true fighting nature kept him in the arms of a broken-hearted mother for far longer than she thought she would have with him. Gabe passed away on the evening of April 20 with his Momma, Poppy, Gramps, Gigi, and Mimi at his side.
The family mourns the loss of a dear sweet angel of a boy but is grateful for the two years he blessed our lives and celebrates his return to God's loving embrace, nothing to prove in mortality.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify friends and family of the death, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide a sense of closure.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charities or organizations where donations can be made in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph. Online obituaries can be longer and more detailed.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper by contacting their obituary department directly. They will provide guidance on their specific requirements, such as word count, formatting, and deadlines.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is celebrated in the way you want. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your loved ones may still want to add or modify certain details after your passing.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication, word count, and additional features like photos or videos. Online platforms often offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge a fee based on the length of the obituary.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms often publish immediately, while traditional newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

What if I'm not comfortable writing about the deceased person's cause of death?

You're not obligated to disclose the cause of death in an obituary. You can simply state that they passed away or died suddenly without going into details.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the deceased person's life that you're unsure about sharing publicly, it's best to err on the side of caution and omit them. Remember that an obituary is meant to be a celebration of their life, not a expose.

Can I include information about memorial donations in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many people prefer memorial donations over flowers. Be sure to specify the charity or organization and provide any necessary instructions for making donations.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider reaching out to a funeral home or professional obituary writer for assistance. They can provide guidance and support during this difficult time.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to republish an obituary on a special anniversary or birthday of the deceased person, you can contact the original publication or use online platforms that allow republication.

How do I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, double-check facts like dates, names, and spellings before submitting the obituary. It's also a good idea to have multiple people review it for errors before publication.

What if I need to correct mistakes in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication immediately if you discover errors in an already-published obituary. They may be able to issue a correction or reprint.

Can I include social media handles or hashtags in an obituary?

Yes! Including social media handles or hashtags can help spread awareness about the passing and create a digital tribute.

How do I handle requests for changes from family members?

If multiple family members have differing opinions on what should be included in the obituary, try to find common ground and compromise. Remember that everyone is grieving differently and may have different perspectives on how to honor their loved one.

What if I'm overwhelmed by grief and can't write an obituary right now?

It's okay! Take your time and prioritize your emotional well-being. Consider asking a trusted friend or family member for help or seeking support from a professional counselor.
