Mark Holzknecht - August 12, 1947 - November 29, 2023

Departed: 11/29/2023 (Davie)
Obituary Preview: Mark Holzknecht died, peacefully, in Miami, FL, on November 29, 2023, following complications from a kidney infection. In his 76 years on this earth, he touched so many with his gentle and kind heart. There were several chapters to his story, in the role of father, son, husband, brother, uncle, friend, athlete, hard worker and Grandpa.
Born in Clarksville, Indiana on August 12, 1947, to Veteran Joseph Holzknecht and Maryrose Holzknecht (née Bohn), Mark was the middle child of five. They lived in Charlestown, Indiana across the river from Louisville, Kentucky where they spent time with extended family. He is survived by sisters, Mary Jo Thomas and Betty Jo Ridings, who hold the memory of their late brothers, Stephen and Roy, close to their heart.
In awe of their father’s resilience navigating these many chapters, his daughters, Marcia Brooks, Lisa Barroso and Kelly Holzknecht, were raised by a man of undeniable integrity that will live on in the next generation of family. Some of Mark’s best qualities can be seen in his grandchildren. Marcia and husband Nick Brooks see Grandpa Mark in their son Luke’s humility, integrity and athleticism and in their daughter Ella’s grace, dynamic energy and perseverance. Lisa and husband Will Barroso see Grandpa Mark in their son Brandon’s sweet and witty sense of humor and in his thirst for learning.
Mark was married to Robin Rosen (née Meyers) from 1972-2001. During those years Mark worked for Aloha Freightways in Miami, and followed his dedicated service to that company by creating his own business, in partnership with Robin, RAM Parcel Service. People who contracted Mark’s service always shared the same sentiment: Mark treated his customers better than anyone in the business, and he was adored by all who knew and worked with this gentle giant of a man. On Sundays off from his typical six-day work week, you could find Mark on the fairway, enjoying his favorite pastime, golf. Later in the day you would find him clicking from channel to channel watching more golf and his other favorite sports, which were EVERY sport! In later years he also paid close attention to the weather report, alerting his Chicago and New York family what to expect.
Mark is also survived by his son Eddie Hitchcock who was born during a brief marriage to Wendy Hambey of Orlando, FL. Mark and Wendy went to Colonial High School in Orlando, before Mark moved down to South Florida, where he spent the rest of his years.
At Colonial High School Mark was a tri-varsity athlete, lettering in football, playing basketball and participating in track and field. He earned the nickname “Horse”- another elegant animal. He took on the responsibility of hard work and taking care of his family, sacrificing the completion of a college education. His support for his family ensured that all three of his daughters were able to pursue serious dance training, and his example of perseverance helped them spin off onto different career paths after earning college degrees. Mark was so proud of his family, in awe of his sisters and their families and in his final chapter looked forward to every visit with his grandchildren. His family will continue to enjoy traditions and memories and will carry on the goodness that they found in Grandpa Mark.
The family will hold a memorial on the morning of December 22, 2023 for close friends of the family and those who would like to pay respects to remember Mark.
Please contact Marcia Brooks at marciabrooksct@gmail.com for details. The service will begin with a reflective walk near the Miami Springs Golf Course at 10:00 am followed by a short service nearby.

Joyce Lydia Bronock - November 23, 1934 - September 22, 2023

Departed: 09/22/2023 (Davie)
Obituary Preview: Joyce Lydia Bronock, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2023, in Miramar, Florida. She was born on November 23, 1934, in London, England. Both her husband, Derek John Bronock, and her brother William Fussell (Valerie), preceded her in death. She lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and humor.
Joyce was a woman of many passions. She had a love for knitting, a skill she perfected over the years, creating countless sweaters, blankets, and gloves for her loved ones. Her creations were a testament to her patience and dedication, each stitch meticulously crafted with love. She had a particular fondness for mysteries, especially British mysteries, spending countless hours engrossed in the twists and turns of “Inspector Morse,” “Vera,” and of course “Midsomer Murders.” Her love for these stories was infectious, and before you knew it you were sitting down with a cup of hot tea trying to figure out who killed the Vicar in the latest episode of "Father Brown."
Joyce held a special place in her heart for animals, particularly elephants. She had a deep respect and admiration for these majestic creatures, captivated by their intelligence, love of family and grace. Her bedroom was home to many elephant figurines of all shapes and sizes.
She also had a sweet tooth, with a particular fondness for dark chocolate and vanilla ice cream. She could often be found enjoying these treats in the company of her family, her laughter, and the occasional pun, made tea time memorable.
Joyce is survived by her son, Lee Bronock (Phyllis) of Hattiesburg, MS, her daughters, Liana Hannsz (Michael) of Liberty, MO, and Lydia Badillo (Rafael) of the home. Grandchildren, Claire Nugent (David), Sundara Bronock, Cyrus Bronock (Camden), and Hunter and Haley Badillo who will miss her dearly. She was also great grandmother to Sara, Vanessa and Ashley Nugent as well as Sasha and Samuel Caruso. They, along with friends and family members in Europe, America, and Australia, will remember Joyce for her kindness and generosity.
Joyce's life was marked by her enduring love for her family, her passion for her hobbies, and her unwavering kindness. She lived her life with grace and humor, and she left an indelible mark on those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her loved ones, in the stitches of her knitted creations, in the pages of the mysteries she loved, in the admiration of the animals she loved, and in the sweet taste of dark chocolate and vanilla ice cream. To honor Joyce’s wishes to “not have a fuss made over her”, there will be no funeral service. We invite you to please privately celebrate her memory in your own ways. Know that she will be with us all in spirit. (But leave out a bit of chocolate just in case.)
Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time.

Mary Cheryl March - July 29, 1945 - June 29, 2023

Departed: 06/29/2023 (Davie)
Obituary Preview: Mary went by the name Sherry. She had been battling Stage 3c Ovarian Cancer and Stage 3b colon cancer for 31 months. She never complained. She never was in a bad mood.   The 31 chemos caused neuropathy in her hands and feet and caused nausea, weakness, loss of hair, and caused loss of appetite. She never complained! For her chemotherapy infusions, she had to sit for up to 8 hours, enduring painful arthritic problems in her knees, feet and toes. Never complained.   She had a painful dry eye condition and was extremely sensitive to the light. Never complained. She cared more for others than she did herself. She was always worrying about how I was doing, even though she was fighting with such a nasty, unrelenting, unforgiving disease, cancer.   When younger she was an impressive dancer and set the dance floor on fire doing the twist, or the frug, or the pony. She was very clever and inventive, and had great planning skills. When we had a project to do, she used to drive me crazy frequently checking with me to see if I was following the steps correctly.   She was also an amazing mother, raising our adopted son Robby. Above all Sherry made me a very happy husband for 58 years. When I told her that I wasn't as strong as she was, and asked her how she could continue to fight the cancer, she would merely say "I am not ready to go".   This world, and my world, had just lost a genuine, caring, strong, resilient woman.  Sherry passed away June 29th, 2023 at 11am. I've loved her deeply for 58 years, and I will continue loving her and missing her.

José was born in Havana, Cuba and migrated to Miami, Florida in the early 1960s with his parents.  He was devoted to his family and friends with whom he spent most of his time—when he wasn’t swimming, of course.  He was a proud deaf, gay, Cuban man who will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.  His trademark smile and smirk,  bear hugs, blunt honesty, and ability to be happy ALL the time are what defined José.  His light will shine well beyond his presence on earth with us. His impact within the deaf community in South Florida and beyond will carry on with this light, and his footprint on our lives will remain with us forever. Some of his closest and dearest friends have said: “…José was a fixture of support in the Deaf and gay communities of Miami and beyond.” “His lasting impact on his students and the MDC community will be felt for years to come….”
In coordination with the friends in the deaf community & Miami Dade College, a Celebration of his life will be held.at Miami Dade College North Campus, 11380 NW 27 Avenue, Miami, FL 33167,  January 22, 2023 from 1:00 - 5:00 PM.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?
