Dennis "Joe" Pflaum - Unknown - February 16, 2023

Obituary Preview: Dennis "Joe" Pflaum, age 75 of Hays, Kansas passed away Thursday, February 16, 2023 at HaysMed. Joe was born on November 5, 1947 in Falls City, Nebraska to Albert and Leola (Wissman) Pflaum. On October 5, 1969 he married Vicki (Furnas) in the Falls City Methodist Church.
Joe was the owner of Brown’s Shoe Fit in Hays for 41 years. In addition to owning the store he drove an Athletic Bus for Fort Hays State, drove a flagger vehicle for Hess Services moving oilfield tanks, as well as helping with car transports for local car dealerships. Joe was an avid outdoorsman particularly hunting and fishing and enjoyed traveling the country. His greatest joy was being able to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events.
He is survived by his wife, Vicki Pflaum of Hays; his son, Aaron Matthew Pflaum and significant other, Stacy Budig and his children, twin girls, Brooke and Brittany and his son, Blake all of Hays; his daughter, Lindsay Hart and husband Jamie and their son, Braxton all of hays; two sisters, Rosie Wanchisen of Denver, Colorado and Joyce Neilsen and husband Jim of Broomfield, Colorado as well as his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents,; a brother, Kenny Pflaum and his wife Lori; and a brother-in-law, Tom Wanchisen. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church of Hays with pastor Troy Miller officiating.
Private family burial will take place in Falls City. Memorial contributions are suggested to HaysMed Hospice, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks or the Cancer Council of Ellis County. Chris Gottschalk - Unknown - February 14, 2023

Obituary Preview: Chris Anthony Gottschalk of Hays, Kansas passed away in his home Tuesday, February 14, 2023.  He was born in Manhattan, Kansas on May 18, 1959, to Cecil and Dorothy (Befort).  Chris graduated from TMP in 1977. On November 17, 1979, he married Krista Leiker at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.
Chris worked in the oil field for most of his career. Through a life spent on the wells, he made life-long friends and considered many in his cohort his extended family.  He leaves behind a lasting legacy in Kansas oil, notable both for his accomplishments in the industry and for those whose lives he touched.
Chris lived life to its fullest. As a life-long Kansas City Chiefs fan, he was thrilled to watch his team win the Super Bowl this year.  In true Chris fashion, he enjoyed the game surrounded by family and friends while hosting the best gameday party in town.  His love of life was only outweighed by his generosity toward others, a trait for which he will be well-remembered.
He was actively involved with Thomas More Prep-Marian serving as the Vice President of the Alumni board.  From the sideline to the board room, Chris was a devoted supporter of TMP. Few things brought him as much joy as his years spent watching his kids and grandkids participate in all of their activities.  He was a member of St. Joseph Church, a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, #4166, Schoenchen, and the Friday Morning OPEC Group “Oil Producers of Ellis County”.
Chris is survived by his wife Krista Gottschalk, his 3 children Tyler Gottschalk (Megan) of Hays,  Luke Gottschalk (Jessica) of Houston, Texas, and Katelyn Burkman (Nate) of Ellicott City, Maryland; 5 siblings, Gregg Gottschalk (Patricia) of Hays, Galen Gottschalk of Hays, Troy Gottschalk (April) of Westminster, Colorado, Jan Meade (Joe) of The Colony, Texas, and Becky Serri (Andy) of Sarasota, Florida; and 8 Grandchildren, Teagan Gottschalk, Adilyn Gottschalk, Jonah Gottschalk, Remington Gottschalk, Lily Gottschalk, Miles Gottschalk, Emerson Burkman, and Donovan Burkman.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a God-child Shane Gottschalk, and his father-in-law Don Leiker.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 17, 2023, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hays. Services will be available on Facebook Live as well by going to www.keithleyfuneralchapels.com and select the tab Facebook Live.

Thomas A. "Tom" Koerner - Unknown - February 06, 2023

Obituary Preview: Thomas (Tom) Allen Koerner, 79, Hays, died February 6, at home.  He was  born July 11, 1943 in Hays, KS to Joseph and Bertha (Miller) Koerner and grew up in Hays.
He married Sheila Sheck and later married Judy K. Giebler on June 11, 1977 in Hays. He was a  1961 graduate of St. Joseph’sMilitary Academy, joined the Air Force after graduation and was stationed in Korea and Okinowa during the Viet Nam era. He was a City Commissioner 1975-79, received his degree in Criminal Justice and worked at Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility as Staff Development Specialist. Tom worked in Pest Control, Farmers State Bank Loan Officer and many different jobs.
His memberships included Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #6984, and the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly. His careers in law enforcement were: Sergeant with Staff Development at Larned Mental Health Correctional Facility, Police Officer with the Hays Police Dept., Sheriff’s Deputy with Ellis County Sheriff’s Dept.
On January 3, 2009, he was ordained a Permanent Deacon with the Salina Diocese and served at Immaculate of Heart Mary Church in Hays, KS until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife of the home, a son, Scott Koerner (Vicki), daughter Christine Torres (Jesse), daughter Wanda Sue Keefover (Mike), son Bob Herman, brother Randy Koerner (Wanda); Sister-in-law Nancy Leiker, 7 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 15 step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Terra Davis,  brothers Myron (Skip), Joseph Koerner, & a brothers-in-law, Fred Weber, Jr., Lee Allan Leiker, a step great grandson, Aiden Keefover.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM  Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. Burial with military honors courtesy of the Hays VFW Honor Guard will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday 5 PM - 8 PM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. A Daughters of Isabella rosary service will be at 6 PM followed by a combined St. Mary's/IHMC Council 3rd degree and Bishop Cunningham 4th degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:45 with a parish vigil service following.

Obituary Preview: Betty Jean Ziegler, age 76, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023, at Long Term Care, in WaKeeney, KS.
Betty was born at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Hays, KS, on September 20, 1946, to Ignatz and Mary (Weber) Beer. She was the oldest of four daughters. She attended school in Wakeeney, KS, graduating from Trego Community High School in 1964. Upon graduating, she worked keeping books at the local telephone company in Wakeeney. Betty married Lawrence “Max” Ziegler on August 6, 1966, at Christ The King Church in Wakeeney, KS. To this union, they were blessed with three children. Betty and “Max” made their home on the Ziegler family farm.
Betty was a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm; she was a devoted wife and mother. She loved to cook, and we enjoyed many delicious meals especially during the holidays, no one left hungry. She also enjoyed playing Bridge with the Collyer group, and she was also involved in the St Michael's Catholic Church Altar Society. Betty liked to garden; she was not much into flowers, but enjoyed watching the vegetables grow. There was a lot of salsa made and oh my, the pumpkins. Betty enjoyed playing cards with her family as there were several evenings spent playing Dingbat, Pinochle, or Poker. She also enjoyed her trips gambling with her sisters and brother-in-laws, and she bowled for many years on a league with her family and friends. They went to national tournaments, always having a good time, and had stories to tell about their trips. Fulfilling his term, Betty also served on the school board after her husband, Max passed in 1990. Betty enjoyed being outside and spent many hours mowing with the riding mower while on the farm. Her favorite Holiday was Christmas. Everyone enjoyed all of the outside and inside decorations that were put up. Folks would drive by the farm to see them. Betty also grew up in a family that loved music. She learned to play the piano growing up and sang in choir. Betty taught piano lessons, and for many years, she was the song leader at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. She passed her love of music onto her children and grandchildren as all of her children and grandchildren can sing and/or play an instrument. Betty was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2004. She moved into Long Term Care in July of 2016 as the disease had progressed. Betty put up a good fight, but the last year had taken its toll, and she has now been called to her eternal home. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, “Max” Ziegler, and her parents. Betty is survived by her children, Charlene (David) Anderson, Wakeeney; Amy (Pete) Befort, Hays; Lance (Libby) Ziegler Wakeeney. Seven grandchildren, Max and Marissa Befort; Emma (Aaron) Satran, and Benjamin Anderson; Avery, Bailey, and Cenley Ziegler; Betty’s sisters, Carol (Vernon) Kinderknecht, Donna (Larry) Keyser, and Sharon (the late Virgil) Uhrich. Betty also has many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 10, 2023 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Collyer, Kansas. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with a luncheon in the Collyer church basement.
Visitation will be Friday 9:00 AM until service time at the church.

Wanda Pilkington - Unknown - February 03, 2023

Obituary Preview: Wanda Lou Pilkington, age 91, of Hays, Kansas passed away Friday, February 3, 2023 at Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit. She was born December 6, 1931 in Colby, Kansas to Nick and Marcella (Schlyer) Eberle.  She married John E. Pilkington July 30, 1950. He preceded her in death on July 15, 2004.
Wanda had worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell starting in Colby, then Norton and finally Hays. She also was the bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Pilkington Construction. Wanda enjoyed being a grandmother and attending their sporting events, rarely if ever missing one. She also enjoyed crocheting and counted cross stitching as well as spending time with John fishing, boating, camping and an occasional casino trip for good measure.
Wanda is survived by her children, Sandi Scott of Hays, John Pilkington and wife Carla of Oakley and Don Pilkington and wife Mary of Louisville, Colorado; 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; a daughter, Tami Pilkington and two sisters, Jeannie Dreiling and Judy Wintz.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays.

Dwight Wagner - Unknown - February 03, 2023

Obituary Preview: Dwight Wagner, age 88, of Larned, Kansas, passed away on February 3, 2023.  He was born March 18, 1934, to Edwin and Mabel Edna (Hinkel) Wagner in Ness City, Kansas.
He graduated Ness City High School in 1953, he then served in the United States Army as a German Interpreter for four years.  After service, he enjoyed many jobs in his life, but found his joy and calling at Larned State Hospital as a Licensed Mental Health Technician II, where he worked for 14 years.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW.  Loved spending time at the Welcome Inn in Larned where he shared about his love of hunting and fishing.  Dwight also loved to ride Harleys, bowling and was an avid domino player.  At one time, he played 26 games in one day.
He is survived by one son, Curtis D. (Brenda) Wagner of Larned, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and  Mabel Wagner, two brothers, Gene and Willie, and one sister, Donna.
Cremation has taken place.  A celebration of life and memorial will be held at a later date.

Mary Ann worked as a school cook for USD 489 in Hays, as well as a secretary for Ralph Hunter, and a bookkeeper for Munjor water district.  She was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor.  She enjoyed sewing, spending time with her grandchildren and hosting special holiday meals.
She is survived by two sons, Jake Befort and his wife Mitzi of Bison, KS and Lyle Befort and his wife Linda of Sublette, KS; six grandchildren, Amy Davidson and her husband Michael, Ryan Befort and his wife Sarah, Morgan Befort, Dusti Befort, Kali Befort, Dawn Befort as well as six great-grandchildren; brothers Melvin Gabel, Salina, KS; Robert Gabel, Colorado; and Hilarius Gabel, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers, Gilbert, Herbert, and Vernon Gabel.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM on Monday, February 6, 2023 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorial visitation will be Sunday 5PM - 7PM with a combined vigil and rosary at 7PM all at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Henry Mason Sellers - Unknown - January 31, 2023

Obituary Preview: Henry (Hank) Mason Sellers, son of W D Sellers and Mildred L (Jenkins) Sellers was born on October 9, 1945 in Fort Worth, TX.  He died peacefully at home on January 31, 2023 at the age of 77.
Henry lived his early life in Texas until his family moved to Kiowa, KS.  He was a graduate of the Class of 1964 Hays High School. On November 18, 1964 he was united in marriage to Patricia Pierce at Hays, Kansas.  This union was blessed with three children: Margaret, Christine and Katherine.  He was a member of the Episcopal Church.
Hank worked as a guidance counselor at St. Francis' Boys Home in Ellsworth, KS.  He worked in the Kansas oilfields and as a truck driver, then moved to off-shore oil explorations in the Indian Ocean/South China Sea, Southeast Asia & The Norwegian Sea, Norway in his younger years while supporting his family.  Hank worked on the Sellers Cattle Ranch for several years managing and involving the family with gardening & geese wrangling. Then he worked at Briggs Auto Group in Manhattan, KS for 12 years. Afterward, he had various sales positions until he began a new venture as safety manager in the shale play oil exploration in the Pennsylvania area.
Those who preceded him in death are his parents, Dub & Mildred Sellers, his sister Patsy Kanak, two great-granddaughters Meredith and Macie Sellens, his wife of 36 years Patricia Pierce and other remembered family members.
Survivors include his brother, Donnie Sellers (Lois) of Russell, KS, three daughters: Margaret Sellers of Kansas City, Missouri, Christine Sellers of Russell, Kansas and Katherine Sellers (Rick Meis) of Russell, Kansas.  Also surviving are his granddaughters: Angela (Miller) Meyer (Patrick) of Adrian, Missouri, Jamie Crawford of St. John, Kansas, Randi Steinle (Randy Leiderbach) of Yukon, Oklahoma and Chandler Reich-Sellens (Jake) of Russell, Kansas.  His great grandchildren:  Edwin, Porter, Veda, Reese, Adler and a number of other family.

Obituary Preview: Jack M. Samples, age 90, of Hays, Kansas passed away Monday, January 30, 2023 at the Good Samaritan Society, Hays. He was born July 3, 1932, at Skiatook, OK, to William and Gertrude (Montgomery) Samples.
Jack graduated from Hays High School in 1950 and took a year of college at Fort Hays Kansas State College. He worked for Central Exploration Co., and Skelly Oil Co. before marrying Patty J. Binder on July 20,1952, at Hays. She passed away January 19, 2006.
Jack was drafted into the U. S. Army in December of 1952, and served 2 years during the "Korean War," before receiving an Honorable Discharge in December 1954, with the rank of Sergeant. He then worked several months for the University of California, out of Los Alamos, NM. For approximately 30 years he worked as an "Office and Field Clerk" for Skelly Oil Co., Getty Oil Co., and Texaco.
He is survived by four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Keri L. Pendleton of Fontana, CA, on May 15, 2007 and a brother, William D. Samples.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 2, 2023, 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

He was born May 21, 1939 in Ellis County, Kansas on the farm near Victoria to Alois “Shorty” and Mary (Jacobs) Schumacher. On April 12, 1958 he married Natalie Robben in Walker, Kansas. She preceded him in death on May 14, 1994. Marion married Valerie Rosenberg on January 18, 2003 in Munjor.
Marion had worked for the Ellis County Road and Bridge department for thirty three years. Prior to that he had worked at the flour mill and P&B Packers. He was an avid outdoorsman particularly enjoying hunting, fishing and farming. He enjoyed his family time as well. He was a member of NRA and St. Francis of Assis Catholic Church in Munjor.
He is survived by his wife, Valerie of Munjor; two sons, Timothy L. Schumacher and wife Tammy of Victoria and Corey Schumacher and wife Heather of Ellis; a daughter, Wanda Ball and husband Jack of Ellis; a brother, Ron Schumacher and wife Pat of Highlands Ranch, CO; 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Natalie; two sisters, Charlotte Veatch and Mary Lou Pfannenstiel as well as two infant brothers, Gerald and Dewayne.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, February 3, 2023 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

She is survived by Timothy Speier, son, Hill City, KS; Robert (Paola) Ames, grandson, Manhattan, KS; Nan Ames, granddaughter, Hays, KS; Rebecca Speier, granddaughter, Los Angeles, CA; Alexandria Speier, granddaughter, San Diego, CA ; great grandchildren: Hannah, Chris, Emily and Robert Jr. Ames; Ronald Speier, nephew, Lenexa, KS; Sharon Speier, niece, Hays, KS; Julia Irene Thigpen Winborne, sister, Hartsville, SC.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Speier; a daughter, Katherine Speier; sons, David Speier and Mark Speier; her parents, Patrick and Julia Thigpen; brothers, Carl Thigpen, Thomas Thigpen, and David Thigpen.

She graduated Plainville High School, and later married Dean Boeckner in Newton, Kansas.
Marjorie had a passion for caring for kids of all ages.  She enjoyed big family meals and getting together brought her the most joy.  She was a parent of her own children, as well as a foster parent for 20 years, taking care of a total of 184 kids, and adopting four.  She had also worked at the Hillcrest Cemetery as a bookkeeper in Great Bend and was president of the Paradise Center Cemetery Board.
She is survived by her children, Avea Mahan, Roeland, Park, KS: Daniel Boeckner, Hays, KS; Dean Boeckner, Jr, Hays, KS: Tammie (David) Acheson, Palco, KS; Tanya Boeckner, Hays, KS; and Jessica Boeckner, Hays, KS; sister LaDonna, Wichita, KS; brothers Mike, Hoisington, KS; Dean (Janice), Topeka, KS; and Darrell, (Janice) Clinton, MO; eight grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: Virgil Leo Uhrich, age 72, of Wakeeney, Kansas, died January 8, 2023, in his home.  He was born April 15, 1950, in Quinter, Kansas to Leo Benedict and Rosalia (Zerr) Uhrich. Virgil married Sharon Kay Beer September 3, 1992, in Hill City, Kansas.
He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam war as a mechanic on the USS Collett. He worked as a mechanic at Fondoble Motors in Ellis, then worked in the service department of the Norton Highway Department, then 29 years at Pepsi where he worked in the warehouse, as a route driver, and vending technician, retiring in 2009. Virgil decided to end his retirement after three days and started work for Trego County Road and Bridge. He then worked part time for Trego County Road and Bridge, as well as, Riedel Farms, retiring in 2021.
In April of 2022, he was able to take part in the Coffeyville Honor Flight accompanied by his great nephew Braddix Bozarth.
Virgil enjoyed woodworking, especially making toys for kids, and was well known for building many rocker glider chairs until November 2022.  He liked to spend time fishing, camping, and spending time with family.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon of WaKeeney; sons, Kirk (Cindy) Knouf, Quinter, KS;  Chad Uhrich, Ellis, KS; daughters, Bridget (Ed) Beall, Wakeeney, KS; Collett (Andrew) Spencer, Wakeeney, KS; Kristi Grate, Tulsa, OK;  Heidi (Kerrey Moore) Uhrich, McPherson, KS; brother, Dwayne (Terri) Uhrich, Norton, KS; sister Marla (Curt) Bozarth, Norton, KS; Chris (Brad) Carlin, Norcatur, KS; Monica (Brian) Roe, Hays, KS; Valerie (Phil) Babcock, Norton, KS; eight grandchildren, Sierra (Levi), Jessica, Caleb, Blake (Kenna), Nathaniel, Rylee, Kaylee, and Mason, and five great grandchildren, Ayla, Rosie, Elias, Rory, and Jax.  As well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was born September 17, 1964 in Hays, Kansas to Leon and Altarena (Windholz) Basgall. He graduated from LaCrosse High School in 1983. On May 4, 1985 he was united in marriage to Virginia (Dreiling) in Hays.
Stephen worked for Fort Hays State University starting out in construction and currently at Sternberg Museum as a maintenance technician.  Stephen enjoyed restoring and tinkering on older muscle cars with a particular fondness for 1970's Chevelle's and El Camino's. As his neighbors would tell you he enjoyed Rock "n" Roll music and he was happy to visit with all who would stop by.  He also enjoyed painting and Drywalling which he learned from his father-in-law, Harry.  Stephen was an avid animal lover particularly dogs and above all he was a very proud husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Hays; his parents, Leon and Altarena Basgall of Yocemento; his son, Kendrick Basgall and wife Shania and their son, Krew all of Olathe, Kansas; a daughter, MaRyan Hulvey and husband Nathan and their children, Parker and Airalia all of McPherson; a brother, Keith Basgall and wife Jean of Hays and a sister, Karen Thornton and husband Shon of Garden City.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Tony and Philomena Windholz and Fidelis and Rose Basgall.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, December 30, 2022 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

She was born December 3, 1936 in Antonino, Kansas to Mike and Mary (Stecklein) Befort. On August 18, 1956 she married Cecil Gottschalk at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays. He preceded her in death on February 11, 2016.
Dorothy worked at Travenol and as a seamstress at Stromgren Supports Inc.  She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, VFW Auxiliary, the Hays Rec Commission Fitness Center, Ladies Bowling League at Centennial Lanes and the Fort Hays Golf Course Ladies Association. Dorothy lived a full and simple life. She loved her faith, family and friends above all.  She enjoyed attending daily mass, watching her children and grandchildren play sports along with professional and collegiate teams, playing golf, bowling, doing puzzles, playing trivia and most importantly spending time with her family.
Dorothy is survived by four sons, Gregg Gottschalk (Patricia) of Hays, Chris Gottschalk (Krista) of Hays, Galen Gottschalk of Hays and Troy Gottschalk (April) of Westminster, Colorado; two daughters, Jan Meade (Joe) of The Colony, Texas and Becky Serri (Andy) of Sarasota, Florida; a brother, Jim Befort (Esther) of Broomfield, Colorado. Obituary Preview: John Orlando Ross, of Hays, Kansas, passed away on December 23, 2022, at Rush County Memorial Hospital swing bed unit in La Crosse, Kansas.  He was born July 9, 1955, in Plainville, Kansas to Emmett Alvin Ross and Julia Sarah (Smith) Ross.  He graduated from Stockton High School and Salina Area Vocational Technical School where he studied electronics.
John worked a variety of jobs, including laying fiber optic lines for AT&T, being a ranch hand, working at the power plant in Stockton, and welding, among others.  In his younger years he loved riding his Harley, hanging out with friends, and attending Grateful Dead concerts. More recently he was an avid gamer, often playing video games into the wee hours of the morning.  He continued to enjoy hard rock music.
John is survived by his oldest sister, Olive (Ross) McReynolds and 11 nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, four siblings:  Emmett Ross, Jr., Robert Ross, Jack Ross, and Marla Goodman, as well as one nephew, Jack Ross, Jr.

Obituary Preview: Lora Gallegos-Haynes, age 63 of Hays, Kansas passed away Thursday, December 22, 2022, in Hays. She was born June 19, 1959, in Denver, Colorado. On August 16, 1986, she married Thomas J. Haynes in Denver.
Lora has been a Spanish teacher at Hays High for more than the past twenty years. Her involvement and passion for her students, church family and the community are widespread. She was responsible for starting the Hays International Travel Club which allowed her and students to travel internationally. To allow for the travel expenses which could take up to two years of countless fund-raising efforts were held including working concessions, wreath sales, bingo, bake sales and pizza sales. Lora and her husband, Thomas started up and operated Lomato’s Pizza in Hays which is named after the first two letters of Lora, Marie, and Tom’s names.
Traveling was truly a passion for Lora and amazingly she and Tom had traveled to all 50 fifty states, the lower forty-eight states by motorcycle. She also enjoyed crafting and crocheting as well. She was a member of the New Life Center Assembly of God Church in Hays and the NEA.
Lora was a caring soul who was a caregiver to so many. She was an adored teacher, friend, and adopted “Grandma” to countless students and people in the community.
Lora is survived by her mother and father, Priscilla and Morris Branch of Bennett, Colorado; husband, Tom of Hays; her daughter, Marie Haynes of Overland Park, Kansas; step sons, Tim Haynes of Bison, Kansas and Terry Haynes of Hays; siblings, Morris Branch Jr. of Aurora, Colorado, Luana Branch of Bennett, Colorado, Larry Branch of Denver, Frank Madrid of Visalia, California and Rebecca Hill of Broomfield, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Talia, Elon, Jazmine, Harley, Kiran, Terrence II, and Juliet as well as eight great grandchildren, Oliver, Ronan, Tyler, Brooklyn, Razariah, Reviahna, Daunte and Aries.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lorenza and Eloy Gallegos and her siblings, Chana, Larry, Lupe, and Lydia.
Funeral services will be10:30 AM Monday, January 2, 2023, at Celebration Community Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Nagel.

Obituary Preview: William E. “Bill” Thompson, 83, of Schoenchen, Kansas died Monday, December 19, 2022, at Hays Medical Center, surrounded by his family.
He was born March 11, 1939, in Bristow Oklahoma, the son of Ben and Faye (Blackmore) Thompson. Bill graduated from Codell High School in 1957.  He then enlisted in the Navy and served from 1959 to 1969.  He boarded the ship USS ST. Paul out of Long Beach, California, while stationed aboard, they escorted President Eisenhower.   In August,1963 he was united in marriage to Janice Tinkler, they later divorced.  In June 1986 he married Kathy (Munsch) Herrman they were married 36 years.  Bill started his working career in the oilfield, owned a backhoe business and a donut shop and went back to oilfield as a service rig operator, driller, floor hand and pumper. He pumped wells for many oil companies, the last to be Kaiser-Francis Oil Company.  He was a grain hauler for Schreiner Trucking and Golden Plains Trucking. After retiring from trucking, he then went to work for Hays Area Children Center as a custodian for 12 years, then worked at Dollar Tree as a floor stocker for two years.
Bill was a joy to be around, he always had a funny remark on what others said, anyone he knew truly enjoyed and loved him. He always made everyone he saw smile and laugh, especially his sister Loretta.

He was born December 26, 1935, in Hays the son of George and Edith (Linenberger) Gottschalk. On July 16, 1955, he was united in marriage to Rita Hoffman in Hays and they celebrated 67 years of marriage.
Leroy and Rita were owners and managers of Leroy’s Service Station in Hays for 65 years and U-Haul for 26 years. He was a Life member of the St. Anthony Council # 4166 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and the Bishop Cunningham 4th Degree Assembly #282. He was also a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and the Sunflower Polka Club.
Leroy did not know a stranger and truly loved his time working with his family at the service station. He enjoyed traveling, dancing, playing cards, watching the Chiefs, Royals, KU and K-State as well as Western movies. Above everything else Leroy took great pride in his grandchildren and being a part of their lives.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Gottschalk of Hays; two Sons: Kevin Gottschalk and wife Chris of Hays and Kent Gottschalk and wife Michelle of Wichita; a daughter-in-law, Sandy Gottschalk of Hays; four grandchildren, Brandon Gottschalk and wife Maci of Hays, Dylan Gottschalk and wife Olivia of Spring Hill, Kaylor Gottschalk of Hays and Keeton Gottschalk of Wichita; a brother, Robert Gottschalk of Hays and a sister-in-law, Sharon Gottschalk of Hays.

Mike attended schools in Jetmore, Kansas and Hays, Kansas, graduating from Hays High School in 1966 and he attended Fort Hays State University.
While working many different jobs in his lifetime, Mike was best known for his work in the oil fields over the last several decades, and his bumper sticker was a testament to that. “Oilfield Trash and Damn Proud of It!” Mike was an avid sportsman, belonging to Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. He loved to hunt, fish and raise German Shorthairs. Mike always had a gun and fishing pole with him, should an opportunity present itself. Owning and riding his motorcycles was a true passion. Mike always had a story to tell anyone who would listen.
Mike is survived by a brother, Tim S. Rupp, Hays, Kansas; sisters, Jennifer Rupp and her husband Gus Hallin, Durango, Colorado and Vicki Runge, Hays, Kansas; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews; and his ex-wife, JoAnn Schauvliege.
He was Preceded in death by his mother; father; stepfather, Michael M. Rupp; a brother, Chuck Schauvliege; his grandparents, Mabell and Don Bowie, Irene and Louis Schauvliege; step grandparents, Andrew and Adeline Rupp, and Charles Greenstreet.
