Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, details about their life, and information about funeral or memorial services. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with family, friends, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also serving as a formal announcement of their passing. They allow family and friends to share memories, pay tribute, and say goodbye.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on what information to include.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, survivors (family members), predeceased relatives, education, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and information about funeral or memorial services.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their specific submission guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the written obituary text and any accompanying photos.

Can I write an obituary for someone who didn't want a funeral or memorial service?

Absolutely! An obituary can still be written and published even if there won't be a formal service. This can be a meaningful way to acknowledge the person's passing and provide closure for those who knew them.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died many years ago?

Yes! While it's more common to write an obituary shortly after someone's passing, there's no time limit on when you can write one. This can be a therapeutic way to process your emotions and reflect on the person's life.

How do I handle writing an obituary for someone with a complex or difficult past?

Be honest and compassionate when writing about the person's life. Focus on their positive qualities, accomplishments, and relationships. Avoid sensational or negative details that might cause harm to others.
