Obituary Preview: Michael Vilas 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18 “For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.”
On April 10, 2024, Michael Thomas Vilas completed his journey home surrounded by his loving family.
Michael Thomas Vilas was born on July 23, 1930, in Jersey City, New Jersey. The oldest son of 4, Mike grew up in Jersey City before entering the Army in 1951, where he served four years, including a two-year tour in the Korean War. After returning to New Jersey, Mike met and married his first wife Constance Salvatore in 1954. While working full-time in the accounting department for Dow Chemical and starting a family, Mike enrolled in night school at Rutgers University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. In 1962, Mike began what would be a long and decorated career with the United States Government, working in the U.S. Army Electronics Command at Fort Monmouth, NJ. In 1969, Mike moved his wife Connie and three children to Tucson and began working for the U.S. Army Strategic Command at Fort Huachuca as a Project Manager for the Communication Command of the Military. For the next two decades Mike traveled the world negotiating and procuring communication contracts with numerous U.S. Allies from Europe to the Middle East and as far away as Asia. After retiring in 1988, Mike started his own Tax and Consulting business that he operated until finally retiring in the early 2000s.
After the passing of Connie in 2000, Mike met his second wife, Dorothy at church where they were rarely apart. They enjoyed the next 23 years together traveling and enjoying the families together. Dorothy cared for Mike through many challenges with his health over those years.
A devoted husband and father, Mike never slowed down. He was never the kind of person that would stand by, and watch life pass him by. He was the person that embraced life and challenged it to come along for the journey. On top of a career that took him around the world for weeks at a time, he found time to give his knowledge and time to so many different people and organizations where he served as board members. From Sahuaro Little League where his two sons played, to the Tucson East ELKS Lodge, the Knights of Columbus and the Sons of Italy. Even after full retirement, he volunteered at the Pima Air and Space Museum and served as an ambassador for the retirement home where he lived until passing.
Mike built a family and created a legacy that will continue for the future generations of the Vilas Family. He spent Sundays after Church calling family members from Aunts and Uncles to cousins, nieces and nephews, children and grandchildren to keep the family close and connected. Rita M. Greeley - June 29, 1945 - March 31, 2024

Departed: 03/31/2024 (Tuscon)
Obituary Preview: Rita Marie Greeley, a 46-year resident of Tucson, Arizona, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2024 after a short battle with cancer. Her departure on Easter was fitting as she was a deeply devout Catholic who cherished and celebrated the religious significance of the holiday. Born in Muskegon, Michigan on June 29, 1945, Rita was the oldest of six children. For most of her youth, she lived in a house that was being built by her industrious father, who worked at the local paper mill. Noticing that her parents needed help managing the family, Rita was compelled to take on responsibilities at a young age by cooking the family meals and committing to the local 4-H program. A naturally gifted seamstress, Rita won numerous youth 4-H awards, and frequently made clothes for her younger siblings and herself.
In 1963, Rita graduated from Catholic Central High School in the top three of her class, and she decided to pursue a nursing program and join the United States Air Force. She graduated from the Mercy School of Nursing in 1965, and worked as a nurse in the Mother Baby ward until everything changed on July 13, 1967 at Webb AFB in Big Spring, TX. While sitting at a table resting a broken foot, she was approached by an officer in the Air Force, Andrew Thomas Greeley. He took her to a military gala, and their romance ensued. They were married in 1969, and since the military at the time couldn’t guarantee she would be able to work on the same base as her husband, Rita left her nursing career and shifted her passion toward having a family.
In 1984, after traveling the world for the Air Force, Andrew was stationed at Davis Monthan AFB, and Rita and Andrew both fell in love with Tucson, Arizona, where they would raise their three children: Andrew, Margaret, and Michael. Over the following years, Rita devoted her life to running all the domestic chores of the household. From cooking to cleaning to teaching algebra and grammatically correct writing, she was a woman with many abilities, and she pushed her children to always strive to be their best. In her spare time, she made stuffed animals for neighborhood kids, and mastered the art of making homemade bread and cookies. She also adored the various cats she had over the years, and was especially fond of a white Persian cat named Fluffy, who passed away in October 2016.
In December 2019, after 50 years of marriage, Rita’s husband, Andrew, passed away. She cared for him through his battle with Alzheimer's and was steadfast in keeping him at home for as long as possible. This loss had a profound impact on her. To overcome the grief, Rita spent her afternoons in her backyard pumpkin patch sharing the day with hummingbirds, cardinals, quails, and the two neighborhood cats, Ninja and Spy. She continued to bake often. She also gained a new appreciation for classic movies, and was particularly fond of Cary Grant, James Stewart, and Ingrid Bergman. Her bright light will be missed by all those who were lucky enough to know her and experience her graceful presence.
Rita is survived by her three children: Andrew Greeley of Los Angeles, CA, Margaret Dickens(Michael) of Denton, TX, and Michael Greeley of Tucson; her grandchildren Katherine, Christopher, Caroline, and Claire, and her four siblings, Donna Santos of Kalamazoo, MI, Tom Schuelke (Sherilyn) of Rockford, MI, Mary Forget(Don) of Mechanicsburg, MA, and Anne Casteel(Tim) of Norton Shores, MI. She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Margaret Schuelke of Muskegon, Michigan, and her brother David Schuelke of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

DeLoris Vernezze - July 13, 1929 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (Tuscon)
Obituary Preview: DeLoris Vernezze, age 94, died on March 30th, 2024, in Tucson, Arizona at her daughter's home surrounded by family. She was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on July 13th, 1929 to Albert and Mary Tenuta (Valenti) and grew up with five siblings in a close-knit Italian-American enclave of the city.
In 1947, at the wedding of her sister, she met her husband, Francis Vernezze, who had just returned from service in WW II. They were married a year later at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. They raised five children and remained married for 64 years until Francis’s death in 2012.
In addition to being a devoted mother and loving wife, she wished to be remembered for taking care of people: nursing her in-laws as they grew ill, bringing her own mother into her house for her final years, making sure her neighbors received their medication, visiting sick and dying friends and relatives, and cooking, always cooking: for families, friends, relatives, anybody really. Ultimately, she took her love for feeding people out of her own kitchen and into the community, managing the deli at Town and Country Liquors. After raising their children and spending their lives in Kenosha, her and her husband retired to Tucson, Arizona in 2000 and spent their remaining years living peacefully and in warm weather with their daughter, Mary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Patricia, and her sisters Nancy, Violet, and Theresa. She is survived by four children: Michael (Julie), Peter (Yong), Richard (Jill), and Mary; her grandchild Katie Toske (JP) and three great grandchildren, Violet, Miles, and Jack; she is also survived by a sister Virgina and a brother Albert (Betty).

Gloria Ornstein - December 01, 1929 - March 29, 2024

Departed: 03/29/2024 (Tuscon)
Obituary Preview: Gloria Ornstein, age 94, died on March 29, 2024 in Tucson, Arizona at Peppi’s House-TMC Hospice. Gloria was born in Queens, New York, in December 1, 1929.
Gloria met her husband, Bernard Ornstein in Miami Beach, Florida in August 1952 and they soon married on December 21, 1952. They moved to Hollywood, Florida in 1959. They relocated to Jensen Beach, Florida in the 80’s where they lived till their final move to Tucson, Arizona in the early-1990’s to join their son, Jeff, and his two children in the hot, dry desert heat.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ida and Isadore, her dear husband Bernard in 2014, and her second child Douglas, in 2018. Her surviving children are her son Jeff, wife Cathy of Tucson, Arizona, and daughter Janet, husband Chuck Johnstone, of Cleveland, Georgia. She has four Grandchildren and four Great-Grandchildren.
Gloria worked in several hospitals as a unit secretary in the Emergency Room. She started working in Broward General Medical Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, when there were no ER unit secretaries at the time. Gloria loved to tell us that she ran the Emergency Room, and the Doctors and Nurses would not do anything until they checked it with her. Gloria and her husband Bernie enjoyed traveling to get out of the heat during the hot summer months of Tucson. They liked to travel to Colorado or Idaho and spend 3-4 months there to enjoy the cool mountain air. They did this for about 10 years before they decided it’s “time to slow down.”
Gloria would always tell their children that her best friend was each other, that is the only thing they needed and they lived that philosophy. They did everything together and always shared each other’s hearts. They were able to share 61 wonderful years together before he passed in 2014.
She lived at Trails West, a senior living community in Tucson where she and Bernie performed in the community’s little theatre. Each year around the holidays, the residents would put on a comedic/slap stick style of show where she loved being the star of the show with the best punch lines. She enjoyed playing Rummikub and Mexican tiles, and played as much as she can. Her son Jeff and his wife spent may Saturday nights playing these games with them. She always had an advantage against her opponents playing Mexican tiles as she had an ability to look at the board and move more tiles around than most people to get to the one tile she wanted! Gloria enjoyed writing short stories. Two of her stories were published in the local newspapers in Hollywood, Florida and Tucson, Arizona. She was an avid reader of James Patterson and other murder mystery writers and her son made sure that she always had a stock of their books from the Tucson Library. Gloria had a great long-term memory and could remember many events from her childhood which made so many of her life stories to family and friends so much fun to listen to. Gloria enjoyed BINGO and ran it at their residence mobile home park in Jensen Beach, Florida, and several living facilities in Tucson, Arizona
Gloria lived in Sierra Del Sol Assisted Living in Tucson since 2023, until she fell and broke her hip in January 2024.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Sierra Del Sol and to Peppi’s House-TMC Hospice for the compassion and care given to their mother. She will be greatly missed.

Long Kim Trinh - October 01, 1941 - March 23, 2024

Departed: 03/23/2024 (Tuscon)
Obituary Preview: Long Kim Trinh, was called home by the Lord on March 23, 2024 in Tucson, Arizona after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born 1941 in North Vietnam, Long's life was shaped by both hardship and resilience. His mother passed away when he was just seven years old. As the eldest son, he shouldered the responsibility of helping to support his family. One of his first jobs was selling ice cream, where any unsold treats became dinner for the family, an experience that instilled in him a lifelong dislike for ice cream. Due to the 1954 partition of Vietnam, the family eventually migrated south.
Drawn to the medical field, Long shadowed a medic from a nearby American base and eventually became a medic himself. He bravely served his community, saving countless lives, including his own brother's. After the war, he continued to provide medical care to his neighbors while working as a cyclo driver.
In 1968, Long married Hoi and together they had seven children. Long's dream of living in the United States became a reality in 1983 after his family made a courageous escape from Vietnam's authoritarian regime.
Settling in Tucson, Long provided for his family of nine by working as an assembler at Krueger. Though unable to pursue a career in medicine directly, he took pride in the fact that all his children became professionals, with some even following in his footsteps by entering the medical field.
A devout Catholic, Long was a pillar at Our Lady of La Vang and frequently attended services at various churches throughout Tucson. He was a kind and compassionate man, always willing to lend a helping hand to those close to him as well as strangers. He acted as an elder and helped numerous couples marry in his church.
