Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary websites, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help notify people of the person's passing, share details about their life and accomplishments, and provide information about funeral services or memorial events.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend will write the obituary. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance with writing and publishing obituaries as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies or interests, surviving family members, and any notable achievements or accomplishments. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, or other ways to pay tribute to the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website it's being published on. Typically, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online publications or memorial websites.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements in an obituary. This can help make the tribute more personal and engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. They may have specific requirements for formatting, length, and content. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary without printing it in a physical newspaper. These websites often offer additional features such as guest books, photo galleries, and donation links.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or website. Newspapers typically charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer package deals or flat fees. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $500 or more for publication.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

It may be possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after publication, but this depends on the publication's policies. Online platforms may allow for easier editing and updates than print newspapers.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks to publish.

Can I request a correction or retraction if there's an error in the obituary?

Yes, if you notice an error in the obituary after publication, contact the publication or website immediately to request a correction or retraction. They should work with you to resolve the issue promptly.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the person's passing, you can opt for a private obituary that's only shared with close friends and family. Some online platforms offer password-protected or invitation-only access to ensure privacy.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of the person's life, so feel free to include lighthearted stories, humorous quotes, or personal anecdotes that capture their personality and spirit.

Should I include information about memorial donations or charities?

Yes, if the deceased had a favorite charity or cause, consider including information about making memorial donations in their honor. This can be a meaningful way for others to pay tribute and continue their legacy.

Can I republish an obituary from one platform to another?

Contact the original publisher or website administrator to request permission to republish the obituary elsewhere. Be sure to credit the original source and follow any copyright guidelines.
