She loved to go on walks to enjoy the ocean breeze and she was soproud that she was able to go on these walks everyday. Everyone who knew her was proud of her. She loved to dance, play cards with her friends at the Fountains.
She loved completing jigsaw puzzles and playing bingo, even though the jackpot is only $5 dollars. Mary Usry is kind, loving, hard working, dedicated, and loved by all. Inez Marie Choate - June 22, 1940 - April 03, 2024

Departed: 04/03/2024 (St. Petersburg)
Obituary Preview: Inez Marie Jackson Choate (1940-2024)
Inez Marie Jackson Choate, 83, of St. Petersburg, Florida died at Suncoast Hospice at Bayfront on Wednesday April 3, 2024 from complications due to a chronic illness. A celebration of life will be held Thursday April 18, 2024 at 11am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, address is 570 62nd Ave N, St. Petersburg, FL 33702. Graveside dedication will be held at 1:30 pm at Sunnyside Cemetery, the address is 5300 19th St. N, St. Petersburg, FL 33714. Inez will be laid to rest next to her husband Ben Choate and her father Paul Jackson. Inez was born in Bluffton, Indiana in 1940 to Nina L. Ketchum and Paul Edward Jackson, who she loved dearly. She was the second born of four children with her brother Carl being the oldest of the four, and Inez being the oldest of the three girls (Alice and Jackie) that followed Carl. In high school Inez had a hot rod Lincoln that she would drive into and through orange groves in Largo when her lead foot got the best of her. At one time she had ambitions to be a race car driver, but she met the man who she would marry and start a family with. She graduated from Largo High and married Donald Conrad Sr. in 1958. In August of 1959 Inez and Don had their first child, Pennie Leigh, who Inez called her Pennie from heaven. Two years later
they would welcome a bouncing baby boy, Don, Jr. to their little family. Inez loved, cared for and doted on her two children. Inez was an amazing cook, cake baker, and decorator. Had she not stumbled upon her true passion as a nurse she would have opened her own bakery and cakeshop. Instead she made all the milestone cakes for family members as well as friends including her daughter, son and oldest grandson’s wedding cakes and countless birthday cakes. One most sought after cake of hers was her eight-layer German Chocolate Cake. Inez was married to Benjamin Choate on March 21, 1986 in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints temple in Atlanta, Georgia. They were blissfully married for 20 months before his untimely death on November 17, 1987. During their short time together they went to the Palmyra Pageant, several temples, visited family and friends, and spent their first and last
Christmas at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. During that trip to Utah they were joined by Ben’s children, Brenda, Diane and Ben (Buddy), and grandchildren as well as Inez’s son, Don, his wife, Stacy and their young child, Joshua. The families had a great time getting to know each other, playing in the snow, and reveling in the Christmas spirit.
Though Inez loved being a mother and a nurse, her favorite role was that of being a grandma and eventually a great grandmother. She treasured her time with her grandkids and great grandkids, spoiling them every chance she could, but also making sure to never miss an opportunity to teach them valuable life lessons and the power of perseverance. Inez was always seen as the Grandmotherly type towards all individuals that entered the family from her nieces and nephew’s, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, to step-great grandchildren and the Godchild of one of her granddaughters; she loved and cherished them all.
Inez had a soft spot for their furry friends, treating each and every one like the valuable family member they were. Inez had three dogs during her adult life. Her first dog for the family was Bosco a black Cocker Spaniel who was very loyal to the family and little Pennie. Inez would be in the yard working with Pennie in her stroller. Bosco would sit there and not let a single person near Pennie. The family’s second dog was a German Shepherd named Sir George the Third. Sir George was very protective of Inez, Don, Pennie and little DonDon. He loved to go on car rides in her little Corvair. What a sight it was to see the huge (to little Pennie and Don) German Shepherd in the front seat with his head out the window, the two children in the back seat and Inez driving. B.C. was the last, and final dog for the family. B.C. was a small Chow and Lab mix with a Napoleon complex. He would take on any dog no matter its size if it came into his territory. Inez loved to take him to the beach on Gandy Boulevard so he could run and go into the water. One of B.C.’s final trips was driving up to the Smoky Mountains one New Year’s Eve day to play in the snow that had freshly fallen. On this trip Inez, her adult daughter, Pennie, and six month old Heather, Inez’s first granddaughter, accompanied B.C. as he romped through the snow for the last time. Later that year Inez would take him out to Gandy Boulevard one last time to run, jump through the waves and roll in the sand and seaweed before he would go over the Rainbow Bridge. There were two other pets, both cats that Inez cared for while Pennie and Donald grew up. The first one, Morris, was the cat of a dear elderly woman who was a family friend. She willed Morris to the Conrad family when she passed. Morris was loving and playful.  After Pennie left home a stray Tom cat adopted Inez and Don, Jr. The markings on the cat reminded Donald of French onion dip when mixing the ingredients with sour cream, so his name became Onion Dip. Onion Dip got cranky as he got older, and developed a tumor in his belly.  Little Heather used to toddle over to where Onion Dip was resting and pat his tummy. One day he lashed out leaving a 2-3 inch long scratch on Heather's cheek. That incident let Inez know that his tumor had gotten worse, and it was time to let Onion Dip join B.C. and the rest of the gang over the Rainbow Bridge. Other pets that joined the family via Pennie and Donald were Albino bunnies, a gerbil, and two Guinea Pigs. There may have also been one or two goldfish won from the State Fair.
Inez had several friends throughout her lifetime. She made friends through nursing school, work and church. One of the first friends family remembers is Valerie Galloway. They met in LPN school and for years were inseparable. Linda Wilcox Coffman was a friend that Inez met through church. They kept in touch even when Linda moved to Arizona, and eventually married. After returning from her Mission, Inez was called as Relief Society secretary by Judy Milbourn - who became a good friend. Inez had another friend named Kathy Armstrong. It seems they would commiserate about their first husbands, until Kathy married Phil, her second husband. When they could work it in their busy schedules they would go on adventures. They were together through it all. One of their adventures included Inez’s niece, Shelly Goulet, grandsons, Josh Conrad, Ben Conrad, and Chris Conrad as well as another church friend, Rose Sanders, son and daughter-in-law, Don and Stacy Conrad, granddaughters, Heather White and Casie LeTourneau. Kathy and her husband Phil were living in Missouri. They traveled to Nauvoo and stayed in their motorhome when all of the above converged on Nauvoo for the dedication of the new Temple. Before the dedication the group toured the Temple. Inez, Kathy, Phil and the rest of the group enjoyed touring the village, shopping and eating together. Bricks from the original temple that was burned in 1848 was used and serves as a symbol of perseverance and determination. Inez was passionate about her role as a Registered Nurse at Bayfront Medical Center in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit. Working for the hospital right out of Nursing school in 1972 as an LPN, and then later she received her BSA to be a Registered Nurse. She continued working at Bayfront Medical Center until she retired in January 2006. She gave Bayfront 33 years. The work was hard, at times sad, but rewarding. Inez would talk about the motorcycle accident victims and if they had only worn a helmet they would have a better chance to live and have a productive life. She would warn us all to stay off motorcycles or at the very least wear a helmet.  She would warn us about parasailing and other dangerous activities that could cause head trauma.  Inez was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints faith for 57 years.  After retiring from nursing she fulfilled her dream and served a mission with the church. She served her Mission in the Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah for 18 months. After returning home from her Mission she was called as Relief Society Secretary. Inez struggled with accepting the calling for many reasons. One of which was her dyslexia. She was afraid she wouldn't spell words correctly when taking notes. She also worried she wouldn’t know many of the women since she was not able to attend many church meetings due to her long hours of work before retiring and going on a mission. Because of her faith she knew the Lord would guide her as he had on her Mission at the Family History Center. She was a wonderful secretary and got to know many of the sisters. She loved being a Ministering Sister. Millie Shaffer is a sister we remember her lovingly visiting, helping with errands, and speaking kindly of. She always enjoyed visits from her Ministering Sisters, Maureen Hesse, and Barbara Goebel. Inez always thought very highly of Maureen’s mother, Carol Hesse, who was her Ministering sister before. Maureen would help her mother with her Ministering and would get to know Inez well.  After Carol passed, Maureen asked to continue Ministering to Inez. Maureen was partnered with Barbara Goebel. Inez adored her Ministering sisters. She considered both ladies her friend. Inez enjoyed Sunday School, especially Barbara Jameson’s teaching. She said, “She is knowledgeable and puts it into words in ways that anybody can understand.” Besides cake decorating, Inez would create wonderful visions with her sewing machine and material. She made a beautiful formal velvet green dress for the Green and Gold Ball for a church dance that was Pennie’s first formal. She made matching gold crushed velvet outfits for Don, Jr., Pennie and herself one year. As well as countless Halloween costumes for her children
and grandchildren. She made beautiful Christmas and Easter dresses for Pennie when she was younger, and then later on for her granddaughters, Heather and Cassandra. She even made a suit for Don Sr and Jr one Easter. Inez’s father made large wooden boxes for storage, which she turned into furniture. She fashioned cushions for seats and backs of couches and chairs then she upholstered them herself. Inez upholstered many chairs whether they were Wing backs, barrel chairs, dining chair seats and backs, and she even reupholstered the Corvair that Sir George the Third had ridden in. Inez was preceded in death by her father, Paul Edward Jackson; husband, Benjamin H. Choate;  her mother, Nina L. Ketchum; her nephew, Edward Jackson; her sister, Jackcine V. Jackson, and her brother-in-law, David Goulet, and cousin Alma Jetton and is survived by her brother, Carl E. Jackson, sister-in-law, Jo, nieces Carmen Jackson, and Carla Brady Cook, nephews
Paul Jackson and Joey Jackson; sister, Alice Jackson and brother-in-law Lawrence Houk,  nephew, Jason Houk, niece Tiffany Houk; niece, Shazelle Goulet and her husband Zachariah Davis; daughter, Pennie Conrad Austin, and son, Donald W. Conrad, Jr., and Stacy Branch Conrad; grandchildren, Heather Marie White LaMay and Matthew LaMay, Cassandra LeTourneau Dumire and Jay Dumire, Gregory David Austin, Jr, Aaron Robert Austin and Payton McGee Austin, Joshua James Conrad and Hilarie Simmons Conrad, Christopher Michael  Conrad, and Benjamin Paul Conrad; great grandchildren, Madison Diaz, Astrid Austin, Ivy Jean Austin, Ashlin Conrad, Dalin Conrad, and Colin Conrad.
Closing: Inez firmly believed in family meals where everyone would talk about their day and things going on in each person’s life. Over the years and generations her dining room table became affectionately known as THE Table. It was here at this table, whether food was present or not, that so many of her lessons were taught, stories were shared, and memories were made.   Anyone who ever spent a single moment of their life at THE Table will forever remember and deeply miss this. Inez lived a full life, surrounded by family and friends. She dedicated her life to nursing and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We will all carry her lessons with us to honor her memory.

Bill graduated from Manchester High School and attended Cornell College. He began his working career as a bag boy for First National Supermarkets and worked his way up to eventually become a store manager. After working in that position for many years, he opened his own store as a franchisee for Dairy Mart Stores, a New England chain like a 7-11 until his retirement.
Bill was predeceased by his parents and his beloved children, son Bill Jr, and daughter Paige. Bill’s love of sports, but especially the Boston Red Sox began at age 8 where he skipped the afternoon session of school to watch the World Series. Unfortunately, he got in trouble as the school principal drove to his home and brought him back to school and said if he ever did it again, he would tell his parents. As a young boy Bill would listen to games on the radio and when his family got a television he was in heaven. As he got older, his love for sports expanded to include the Patriots, UCONN basketball and golf but he enjoyed all sports. He could recite stats and team records of many athletes and teams. He played Little League and American Legion baseball, as well as baseball and basketball throughout his high school Years. He also was an excellent bowler and bowled in leagues for many years and at one point considered going pro. He was an avid golfer, has had 5 Holes-in-one. Initially he played at Manchester Country Club where he won many championships and then continued those winning ways after retirement when he joined Isla Del Sol where he played 3-4 days per week. Bill was actively involved in re-establishing the Isla Men’s Golf Association which had disbanded after General Electric sold the property. Bill had a large Monday morning men’s group which he started in 2004.
Bill was a kind, generous and loving man who never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or special achievement for not only his family but his many friends as well. He reached out to everyone and always made them feel welcome. Many members at Isla have said that he was the first person to reach out to them as new members. He loved his family deeply and was always so proud of their many achievements. Bill lived his life fully and played golf the day before he was admitted to the hospital. That was a fitting finale to a man who loved life.

Roberta A. Valentine - April 13, 1929 - March 25, 2024

Departed: 03/25/2024 (St. Petersburg)
Obituary Preview: Roberta “Bobbie” Johnsten Valentine, 94, passed away on March 25, 2024, after struggling with health concerns. She was born in Canton, Ohio, on April 13, 1929 to Hugh Johnsten and Helen Tinkler. Bobbie, born during the depression year, was the youngest of three children. Financial hardship hit the family, as it did many other families. Hugh, her father had made 3 miniature cities and marketed them to be displayed in store windows, selling ads to the local community where they were displayed. The family camped in various cities one summer, sharing the displays to earn money to support the family. Post-depression, her father became a tool and die maker for the Hoover Company.
In 1936, at the age of six, Bobbie’s father died from strep complications, before antibiotics were developed. Her mother had significant health issues and three children to raise. Reverend Barker and members of Calvary Presbyterian Church assisted the Johnsten family in so many ways.
After high school graduation Bobbie attended Aultman Hospital Nursing program. She graduated in 1950 and immediately began her nursing career at Aultman Hospital. Soon after, she met her future husband, Eugene. They were married in 1952 and immediately began a family in 1953. The family included Jim, Deane, Susan, Dwight, and Dale. She continued working intermittently while the children were young.
The family moved from Ohio to Florida in June, 1967. Neither Eugene nor Bobbie had a job prior to arriving in St. Petersburg. Immediately Bobbie was hired at Palms of Pasadena Hospital as a nurse on the surgical floor. Eugene was hired by automotive department of Zayre Store soon after. The children were enrolled in school and a new chapter in life began.
Bobbie was passionate about her nursing profession and became upwardly mobile in her career. After becoming a Head Nurse at Palms of Pasadena from 1970-73 she became the Director of Nurses at the Deluxe Care Inn from 1973-74. She transferred to Lake Seminole Hospital in 1975, where she held positions including: Social Service Coordinator, Utilization Review Coordinator, Nursing In-service Coordinator, Assistant Nursing Director to name a few. Bobbie retired in 1988 after a long and fulfilling career, proudly believing that the 1950’s way of training nurses was always the best.
Even though Nursing provided a great career path, Bobbie was the number one cheer leader for her family. She remained attentive and involved in each child’s life. Tragically, her son Deane died in a cave diving accident in Tarpon Springs in 1973. The accident had a major impact with every family member. Each managed to keep moving forward, each finding his or her own path along the way. Dwight then died as the result of a cycling accident in 2022, adding further trauma. Though Bobbie’s health was fragile even then, she managed to rally the strength to keep living and holding the family together. Since Dwight’s tragedy, she saw Dale remarry (Lourdes), Steven (her grandson) marry (Margaret), and had learned of the birth of a her seventh great grandchild.
Bobbie’s favorite pastimes were family research and traveling. She began extensive work in putting the family history together. Eugene always asked “just how many horse thieves do you think you can find?” In addition, for ten years after her retirement, she and Eugene traveled with their RV camper. They traveled to every state (they did fly to Hawaii though) and many provinces in Canada. She cherished the friends they met along the way and kept in contact with many.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, and sons Deane and Dwight. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Stone (Mike) of St. Petersburg, Florida, Dale (Lourdes) of Atlanta Georgia, Jim (Anne) of Peachtree Corners, Georgia, and daughter in law Lisa Valentine of Tierra Verde, Florida. In addition her grandchildren are: Bobby, Jeff, Amanda, and Trent Valentine in Georgia; Kelly Haupfear, Christopher Stone, Clayton, Steven, Rachel Valentine, Bradley Engert in Florida and Sophia Faro in California. Seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews round out the family.
The Valentines were blessed with two parents that lived long and fulfilling lives. As much as Bobbie will be missed, we have been left with many memories to cherish that will bring fun stories and healing along the way.
The family would like to thank the staff that cared for Bobbie throughout her 14 years as a resident of Freedom Square. All levels of care went above the call of duty and we are grateful for the services available on the campus. In addition, we want to thank Suncoast Hospice (Lavender Team) for the care and extra support for the last few months of her life. A Service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, April 13 at Freedom Family Church, 10800 Johnson Blvd., Seminole, FL  33772 In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Employee Assistance Fund at Freedom Square, in memory of Roberta Valentine. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also informing others of their passing. They can also serve as a historical record, providing valuable information for genealogical research and family history.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to notify others of a person's passing, but it also provides an opportunity to share stories, memories, and accomplishments of the deceased, allowing friends and family to pay tribute and celebrate their life.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or other professional service. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life and be able to convey their personality, accomplishments, and relationships.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial contributions, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Typically, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or personal websites.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?
