Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to announce the death of a loved one and provide information about their life, achievements, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to share funeral or memorial service details, allowing others to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family members or close friends of the deceased write the obituary. They may work with a funeral home or obituary writer to ensure the information is accurate and complete. In some cases, a professional writer may be hired to craft the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral or memorial service details, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be acceptable for online platforms or specialty publications.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to celebrate the person's life and provide a visual tribute.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or require email submissions. Be sure to follow their specific requirements and deadlines.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming more common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately and honestly. You can store your self-written obituary with your important documents or share it with your loved ones.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or flat fees. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options with additional features available for a fee.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

It may be possible to make corrections or edits to an obituary after it's been published, but this depends on the publication or platform's policies. Be sure to review the obituary carefully before submitting it to minimize errors.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The time it takes for an obituary to be published varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms often publish immediately or within a few hours, while newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, you can include meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems in an obituary to add personal touches and celebrate the person's life.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer to keep the funeral or memorial service private, you can still publish an obituary without including service details. Instead, you might mention that a private ceremony will be held or that memorial contributions can be made in lieu of flowers.

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This allows friends and acquaintances to make a meaningful contribution in memory of their loved one.
