He is survived by his Children Michelle (Mike Morris) Hamm of Indiana, Cody (Courtnye Cavender) Hamm of Sesser and Josh Hamm of Sesser; Grandchildren Jaylynn Hamm and Lilly Morris; Mother Cynthia (Thomas) Korth of Peoria; Father Kenneth A. Hamm of Sesser; The love of his life Teresa Clauson; two Brothers Marty Hamm of Sesser and Greg Hamm of Jacksonville, IL; one half Brother Tommy (Brittany) Korth of Peoria and his Grandparents Betty and Ron Hodges of Sesser. Lee loved to hunt and fish and being outdoors. Lee’s wishes were to be cremated, a memorial service will be held at a later date. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Obituary Preview: Robert “Bob” Wayne Boles, cherished husband of Patsy Ann Boles, peacefully passed away at the age of 75 on March 17, 2024 in Sesser, Illinois. Born in Duquoin, Illinois on November 12, 1948, Bob’s life was defined by his love for his wife, enthusiasm for his passions and work, and his dedication to the dogs he rescued. Bob was very proud to be a union coal miner and worked tirelessly at this for 34 years before retiring. In his retirement he spent his time constructing computers, online gaming with his virtual community, and working with his hands. Most significantly his talent for woodworking was a testament to his skill and craftsmanship. Bob spent years pouring his heart into creating beautiful woodworking pieces that will be treasured by his loved ones for years to come. Bob is survived by his wife Pat, his sister Billie Carpenter of DuQuoin, his children: James (Julie) Boles of Sesser, Yolanda (Todd) Larew of Newburg, WV, Shannon (Minnie) Boles of Waynesburg, PA, and his children through marriage Brad (Cathy) Bradley of Murphysboro and Melinda (Alan) Montgomery of Salem. Bob had many grandchildren: Brittany Larew, Savannah Boles, Seth Boles, Bill Bradley, Ashley (Lucian) Chandler, Natasha Montgomery, Justin (Megan) Montgomery, Mikaela (Peter) Waring, Maci Montgomery, Meesha Montgomery, Makoa Montgomery, Micah Montgomery, and Josiah Montgomery. He also was blessed with 16 great-grandchildren. With gratitude for the time we all had together, we say goodbye to Bob. Words cannot fully capture the depth of our loss, may the love and memories we have all shared bring us comfort in the days ahead. Per Bob’s wishes no public services will be held. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider a contribution in his memory made to the Franklin County Humane Society.

He is also survived by his children Donna (Richard) Yunkus of Benton, Dena (Alan) Fox of Sesser, Larry (Delisia Steele) Atchison of Sesser, Ron (Michele) Atchison of Spring Hill, FL and Darin (Angie) Atchison of Sesser; grandchildren Alicia (Darin) Wuebbles, Lindsey (Andrew) Darnell, Ethan Atchison, Melissa (Nathan) Way, Brittany Atchison, Dailyn (Trey Sharp) Noble, Jayden Fox, Natasha Fox, Alan Fox Jr., Cody Atchison and Phillip Atchison; nine great grandchildren; one sister Diane Stahl of Mulkeytown and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, one sister Betty, one brother Jack Atchison and one aunt Essie Atchison Smith Hayse. Don was a Truck driver and a Coalminer, he had worked at Freeman #3 mine in Waltonville. He was a Dallas Cowboys fan and a Jeff Gordon fan, he loved to tell stories and from his days driving a truck he was like a human GPS. His wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday March 30, 2024 from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM at the Sesser VFW.

Bette Bernell Reynolds - January 05, 1946 - January 28, 2024

Obituary Preview: Bette Bernell Stubblefield was born on January 5, 1946, to Willie and Hazel (Bradley) Stubblefield at their home in Sesser, IL. She grew up in Sesser, and on May 4, 1972, she married Gary Allen Reynolds. Bette and Gary made their home on State Highway 14 east of Benton, IL. Bette graduated from the School of Technical Careers at SIU-C, and worked as a cosmetologist for five years. She then took a job with the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals as a secretary at their Benton office, and worked there 30 years until her retirement in 2001. Bette was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Valier. Bette was an excellent cook, specializing in baked goods, and always made homemade eggnog for the family gatherings on Christmas Eve over the years. Bette is survived by her husband, Gary Reynolds and a son, Brandon Reynolds of Benton. She is also survived by three sisters, JoAnn Garner of Herrin, Joyce (Kent) Hodge of Sesser and Gayla Stubblefield of Mt. Vernon, and a brother Richard (Carolyn) Stubblefield of. Mt Vernon. She is also survived by her trusted and beloved friend from childhood, Linda Muir Howell. Bette and Linda met in church in a preschool Sunday School class, went through grade school, high school and cosmetology school as best buds. Their friendship has continued with Linda as a part of her extended family, standing vigil at her bedside, right along with Bette’s husband and siblings during her last illness. Bette was a doting and loving aunt to the following nieces and nephews who mourn her passing: Dr. Kevin (Myjal) Garner, Kara (Karl) Silge, Kendall (Claire) Garner, Michelle Davis, Lenise (Steve) Sgutt, Jennifer (Ed) Lobenhofer, and Nancy (Paul) Graser. Bette passed from this life on January 28, 2024, after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early January. Bette was preceded in death by her daughter, Danielle, her parents, a sister Carolyn Sue Stubblefield, a niece Sara Stubblefield, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Thelma and Ingram Morgan, and a sister-in-law Donna Lampley. Visitation for Bette will be on Tuesday evening, January 30, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser. Funeral Services with Pastor Bill Uhls officiating, will be held on Wednesday January 31, 2024, at 11:00 AM, also at Brayfield’s. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser. Memorials can be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Foundation, and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home, P O Box 624, Sesser, IL 62884. The family is being served by Steve Gilbert with the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home.

Obituary Preview: On January 15, 2024 Joseph Newton McCarty left this world to be with the Lord and begin his final chapter. Joe, as most knew him, was loved by so many people. He made a lasting impression wherever he went. From his Cajun accent and hilarious personality, all would remember him. Joe was born September 19, 1944 to Flora and Joseph E McCarty (who preceded him in death) in Pineville, Louisiana. After joining the US Army at age 17 he made a lasting impression with joining the 101st Airborne Division and excelling at Ranger school to becoming a Ranger. Shortly after, he withstood two tours in Vietnam. Where he received several recognitions for his performance and duties as a soldier. Joe was commander at the American Legion in Ridgway, IL for many years and remained an active member in Sesser, IL chapter, when he moved there several years ago. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and making so many memories. Throughout Joe's life he always worked hard to be a good provider and instill work ethics. He was able to retire from Big Muddy Prison. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with family and friends. Always stories to be told. Joe was always there to help anyone in need. He never asked for anything in return. He is survived by his children Joseph Newton McCarty Jr. of Junction, IL, Tina Lynn McCarty of Terre Haute, IN, Terry (Christy) Lee McCarty of Ridgeway, IL and Nicholas Keith McCarty of Sesser; step-children Stephanie Smith, Steven Shurtz, Rachel Shurtz, Sarah Urban, Miriam Newman, Christy Cox and Jeffrey Cox; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters Dollie McCarty Stephens of Louisiana and Margaret McCarty Slayton of Louisiana; two brothers Edwin McCarty of Germany and Joseph Luther “L.J.” McCarty of Florida and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters Carolyn, Josephine, Marjorie and Marion. Visitation will be on Friday January 26, 2024 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser. Graveside services will be in Louisiana.

Obituary Preview: Kathleen was born March 19, 1929, to Commodore and Mabel (Slack) Grove in Bible Grove, Illinois. She passed away Sunday, January 14, 2024, at her home in Columbia, MO. She was united in marriage to Kenneth L. Fornear on September 6, 1952. To that union were born a son, Michael Fornear and a daughter Kathi Fornear. Ken and Kathy resided in Carmi, Illinois a number of years before they became owners and operators of Sesser Lumber Company in Sesser, Illinois. Her husband Kenneth Fornear preceded her in death in October 1986. She later married Marvin E. Sapp (who survives) of Columbia, Missouri, on January 6, 1997, and has resided there since. In Columbia, Kathleen was employed in Saffees Ladies Apparel in downtown Columbia, while Marvin farmed. Kathleen enjoyed reading, tending her flowers, and watching or listening to the St. Louis Cardinal’s baseball games. She was a remarkable artist and took great pride in serving as a docent at the Boone County Historical Society. Kathleen is survived by her daughter Kathi Jones, grandson Finius (Amy) Fornear, great-grandsons Zayne and Lelan Fornear, great-granddaughters Kristina, Jovie and Aneira Jones, and daughter-in-law Meredith Fornear. She is also survived by one brother Larry (Vicki) Grove, nieces Michele (Scott) Malone, Pam (Joe) Seed, nephews Jim (Selina) Grove, Harold (Trell) Cockrum, great nieces Kayla Malone, and Sherry (Heath) Harpole. She is also survived by sister-in-law Carolyn (Richard) Stubblefield, and niece Jennifer (Ed) Lobenhofer. In addition, Kathleen is survived by her stepdaughters: Patricia (Glenn) Wehmeyer, Pamela (Mac) Cook, Paula Netemeyer, Priscilla (Robert Aitkens) Stone, Portia (Jerry) O’Laughlan, Jane Harrison, John (Connie) Morris, Larry Morris, and daughter-in-law Kathy Morris, 28 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Kathleen was preceded in death by her first husband Kenneth Fornear, son Michael Fornear, grandson Dylan Jones, son-in-law Brad Jones, brother Jim Grove, sister Maxine Cockrum, sister-in-law Grace Grove, brother-in-law Harold Cockrum, nephew Greg Cockrum, and niece Sara Stubblefield. The visitation for Kathleen will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the First Methodist Church in Sesser. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend James Sloan officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser following the service.

Obituary Preview: Carl Henry Roberts, 80, of Whittington, beloved father, grandfather, passed away on Tuesday October 24, 2023 at Herrin Hospital with his family by his side. He was born on October 17, 1943 in Sesser, IL to Verna (Harrison) Roberts and Archie Roberts. He worked at Old Ben Coal till they closed in 1991, he managed Anrap Rentals for many years and retired from Southern Illinois Tourism. What made him the happiest was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by his children Mark Roberts, Mike (Tammy) Roberts and Kimberly Overturf all of Whittington; grandchildren Rex (Elizabeth) Roberts, Tiff (Curtis) Hodge, Angelle (Billy) Hofman, Tyler (Deanna) Roberts, Nic Roberts and Dakota Overturf; 11 great grandchildren; one brother Cecil (Beckie) Roberts of Sesser; one special nephew David Despain and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Kevin Roberts, one sister Goldie Payne, brother-in-law Carl Payne, one nephew Eddie Jones and one niece Yvonne Frey. Funeral services will be on Saturday October 28, 2023 at 1:00 PM at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Brother Mark Minor officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at 1:00 PM. Burial will be at Shiloh Cemetery in Whittington.

She was born March 25, 1951, in DuQuoin, IL, the daughter of Victor Yung and Helen (Lipsey) Yung. Vicki is survived by her husband: Ernie Downen, her daughter: Tina Cavenaile of Ballwin, MO; son and daughter in law: Tim and Aprill Downen of Hillsboro, IL; grandchildren: Ally Cavenaile of St. Louis, MO; Emily Cavenaile of Springfield, MO; Timothy Hunter and Hudson Downen of Hillsboro, IL; two brothers: Bill Yung and wife Gayla of Sesser and Bob Yung of Bourbonnais, Illinois; a special niece: Roxana Eubanks and many other nieces and nephews. Vicki was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Sue Eubanks. Vicki enjoyed collecting antiques, spoiling her pets and playing Skip-Bo with her grandkids. When she was younger you could find her fishing for long hours to catch enough blue gill to satisfy our craving. She could fry fish better than any restaurant! She loved going to junk stores to find treasures and eating at her favorite Chinese restaurant. We will always think of her and smile when we hear the COPS theme song. Her nurturing nature and devotion to her family was evident in every aspect of her life. Per Vicki’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded, and a private family service will be held at a later date.

He was born on March 11, 1975 in West Frankfort, IL to Bobby Baumgarte and Ruth (Cockrum) Miner. David was a dedicated husband and father. He loved his family and friends. He was the type of person who never met a stranger. He would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. Most people know of him as "Cowboy", and that's because he has spent most of his life fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Fin and Feather club for 6 years. He also loved taking his Harley out for a ride. If he wasn't doing those things, he was working. He took pride in his work and was one of the most hardworking men we knew. He spent 7 years at Continental Tire where he was recently promoted to supervisor. He went to college at Northern Illinois University for the hearing impaired where he met his wife Stacy. They were married for 25 years and had two daughters Samantha Baumgarte of Scheller and Julie (Ryan) Payne of Zeigler; mother Ruth Miner of Sesser; father Bobby Baumgarte of West City; one sister Rebecca Baumgarte of Grand Tower, IL and three brothers Johnny Lee (Marissa) Baumgarte of Valier, Stanley Miner of Sesser and Samuel Baumgarte of Grand Tower, IL. Memorial service for David will be on Friday August 11, 2023 at 7:00 PM at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Brother Nathan Dilliner officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00 PM until the time of the service at 7:00 PM.
