Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased. However, it's not uncommon for funeral homes or obituary writers to assist with the writing process, especially if the family is overwhelmed with grief or lacks experience in writing.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, such as the date, time, location, and any special requests or instructions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and make it more engaging for readers.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the fact of someone's death, often without additional details. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more context and biographical information about the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies depending on the publication. You can usually find submission guidelines on their website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. Some people even use it as an opportunity to add humor or personality to their final farewell.
