Obituary Preview: Harold Matthew Humble, 64, of Wheelersburg, died Sunday, April 17, 2022, in his home surrounded by his family.  Born on January 16, 1958 in Portsmouth, he was a son of the late Thomas Humble, Jr. and Betty Dials Humble and was a boiler maker with Local Union 105 in Piketon.
Matt was a 1976 graduate of East High School, an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed riding motorcycles and traveling with his multitude of friends, leaving his dogs for a brief time.
Surviving are a son, Thomas Humble of Akron, four sisters, Marcia Blethen of San Diego, CA, Debra (Joe) Vitrano of Columbia, TN, Becky (Bill) Dorst of Minford and Kathy (Jerry) Theodoropoulos Johnstown; two grandchildren, Isaiah Humble and Brianna Humble and a very special great-grandson, Abel Gerald.
A service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23rd, at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE.  Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park.
The family will receive guests at Brant’s from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday.

Naomi Cook - November 03, 1939 - April 16, 2022

Obituary Preview: Gladys Naomi Cook, 82, of Mansfield, died Saturday, April 16, 2022, in her home.  Born on November 3, 1939 in Scioto County, she was a daughter of the late Eugene and Alice Hale Roof and retired from Therm-O-Disc after 35 years of service.
Gladys was of the Baptist faith, enjoyed working with crafts, baking, taking care of her house, but…most importantly taking care of her grandkids.
Also preceding her in death were her husband of 37 years, Melvin “Bill” Cook, and brothers Denver Roof, Homer Roof and Clifton Roof.
Surviving are two sons, Billy (Tina) Cook of Mansfield and Kevin (Tammy) Cook of Lucas; two daughters, Vicky Mullins of Mansfield and Lisa (Jerry) Payton of Sciotoville; three sisters, Sharon Newman of Florida, Karen Horsley of Wheelersburg and Delores (Tim) Warner of Wheelersburg; six grandchildren, Michelle Cook, Heather Perry, Gregory Mullins, Chelsea Mullins Nicole Dunahue and Ryan Cook; eleven great-grandchildren, Andrew Hawthorne, Yamia Hawthorne, Alexis Perry, Kamden Perry, Baylee Mullins, Bentlee Mullins, Everlee Mullins, Khylei Mullins, Emerie Dunahue and Baylor Dunahue and a very special great-great granddaughter, Hazel Hawthorne.
A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 21st, at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE.  Interment will be in Vernon Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Pamela Sue Higgins, 59, of Portsmouth, has passed for duties in heaven to join the archangels to shoot her bow.  Born on June 28, 1962 in Weisbaden, Germany, she was preceded in death by her father, Howard Nance, her mother, Pauletta Mingus Paulin and step-father, John Paulin.
Also preceding her in death was her soul mate, Terry L. Higgins, who died on April 21, 2006.
Pam was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, a lifetime member of New Boston Eagles Aerie #2271, Clan #1 Outhouse #3 and the Ladies Hillbillies.
Surviving are sons, Joshua (Courtney) Higgins of Lucasville, Jeremy (Terri) Higgins of Pike County, James Higgins and family of Portsmouth and Brad (Janice) Rucker and family of Chillicothe; sisters, Lynn (Matt) Holtzapfel and Jackie (Tim) Marshall, all of Marysville; step-brother, Jeff Paulin of Akron; step-sister, Diane (Bob) Katzenmeyer of Akron; grandchildren, Katelin Elizabeth, Jeremiah Johnson, Genesis, Kameryn, Skylar and Jackson; soon to be great-grandson, Zaedyn; half-sisters, Shannon (Lamont) Bowie and Lacey Nance and nieces and nephews, Lillie, Aaron, Alex, Adam, Jonathon and Christa; special friends Doug and Sally McManus and Jack and Mindy Keaton; and her beloved companion, Sophie.

Ginny was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Rockwell, whom she married on October 3, 1948, six sisters, Josie Miller, Marjorie Burt, Mary Hunter, Pauline Hunter, Martha Conley and Carol Jo Coldiron, and six brothers, Fenton Miller, Wesley Miller, Jimmie Miller, Harry Miller, Paul Miller and Don Miller.
Surviving are her children, Patricia (Keith) Cooper of Salida, CO, Bill (Beth) Rockwell of Rosemount, and John (Melanie) Rockwell of Tampa, FL, eight grandchildren, Brad Lybrook, Andrew Cooper, John Bloomer, Jr., Joshua (Meredith) Rockwell, Melissa (Justin) Smith, Jenny (Ryan) Stanley, Sara Brocato and Chris (Missy) Graham, four great-grandchildren, Kaelyn Smith, Carter Smith, Henry Rockwell and Grayson Rockwell, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Tammy Sue Malott, 62, of Portsmouth passed on at 540 a.m. on Monday, March 21, 2022 in the Southern Ohio Medical Center.  Born on March 11, 1960 in Olive Hill, KY, she was a daughter of the late Tommy and Helen Rowe Callihan.
Tammy is best described as someone with a huge heart, who would open her home to anyone in need.  Also known as someone not to be taken lightly, though small in stature, she would not hesitate to take on anyone if she felt they had done her wrong.  But what she was most known for was her love for her family.  Her love for her family was strong and consistent and it never wavered.  Tammy was loved by so many and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Also preceding her in death were her siblings, Roger, Mitchell and Beverly.
Surviving are her husband, Mark Malott; daughters Becky and Heidi Callihan; sons, John (Jessica) Berry and Ryan (Tina) Berry; step children, Robert, Johnny and Heather; a brother, Randy Callihan; a sister, Tamathon Callihan, eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
A service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 25th, at Vernon Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Rebecca Sue O’Connor,72, of New Boston, formerly of Sciotoville, died Saturday evening, March 19,2022, in the Ohio State University Hospital emergency room.  Born on November 25, 1949 in Portsmouth, she was a daughter of the late Roger and Opal Hickman Brady and a member of Sciotoville Christian Church.
Becky enjoyed working the elections and meeting everyone and devoted her life to caring for others as a nursing assistant.  She loved playing board games and cards with family and friends, was a lover of books and was affectionately known as one of the Brady Bunch.  A highlight of her life was when the Buckeye football games were on t.v. Most of all, Becky loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were a brother, Bobby Brady, and a sister, Jean Brady.
Surviving are a son, Charles (Jessica) O’Connor of Lucasville; two daughters, Angela (Hakim Jabar) Canaca of LA and Amanda (Jesse) Johnson of McDermott; a brother, Jim Brady of Nebraska; two sisters, Stella Parker of Wheelersburg and Helen Henson of Sciotoville; 8 grandchildren, Kaylin and Jack Johnson, Abbigail, MacKenzie and Samson O’Connor, Ariel and Shakaia O’Connor and Corey Hughes and special great-grandchildren, Easton and Alecia.
A service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 24th, at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE with Pastor Chris Oiler officiating.  Interment will be in South Webster Cemetery.

John Leasure - March 01, 1955 - March 14, 2022

Obituary Preview: John Edward Leasure, 67, of Portsmouth, died Monday, March 14, 2022, in the Southern Ohio Medical Center.  Born in Portsmouth, he was a son of the late Robert and Helen McCartney Leasure and was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and Vestry.
John received his bachelors and master’s degree from Ohio University majoring in communication.  He was very active in the community, having served as a former board member of S.O.P.A.A. He was a current contributing writer for the Scioto Voice and former writer on Bearenger’s and Knots Landing.
A sister, Janis Robison, also preceded him in death.
Surviving are a nephew, John Robison of Laurel, MD and a brother-in-law, John C. Robison.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 19th, at All Saints Episcopal Church with Rev. Sally Schisler and Rev. Kathleen Murray as celebrants.  Interment will be in Ridgewood Cemetery in Wellston at the convenience of the family.

Carl Edward Waddell - February 08, 1929 - March 13, 2022

Obituary Preview: Carl Edward Waddell, 93, of Sun City West, Arizona, a former resident of Sciotoville and Wheelersburg, died peacefully at his home in Arizona on March 13, 2022 after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born February 8, 1929 in Portsmouth to the late Alfred Waddell and Ethel V. Pennington Waddell.
Mr. Waddell served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II, and the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a long-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, as well as a member of the Veterans of Under Age Military, having entered the Service at age sixteen.
He traveled the world extensively and lived in several states, making an abundance of friends during his lifetime. His late mother taught him to “bloom where he was planted”, and he often stated that he “didn’t miss much in this life”.  He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-eight years, Judith Bell Lupe, formerly of Wheelersburg, as well as his brother James Waddell and sisters Ruth Marciano and Blanche Marshall.
Surviving are his sister, Catherine Noxsel of Indio, California , his two daughters Tonya Cuatto of Sun City West, Arizona and Carla Obeso of Leesburg, Florida, his two grandsons, Giustino (Justin) and Giordano (Jordan) Cuatto and four great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 4th, at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE.  Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park.

Kathleen was a member of Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene in Wheelersburg, Daughters of America and Wheelersburg Eastern Star.  She enjoyed bowling and was a treasure at being a mom and nanny.
Also preceding her in death were her husbands, Jack Stanley and Jack Wineka; brothers, Howard, Wilbert James, Cecil and Paul McGraw and sisters, Frances Jordan and Esther Smith.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandra (Alan) Brisker of Minford and Patty (Ron) Webster of Portsmouth; three wonderful grandchildren, Amanda Pettigrew, Melissa Cron and Jacklyn Brisker and four precious great-grandchildren, Mychal Cron, Taylor Cron, Tyce Cron and Paisley Brisker.
A Celebration of Kathleen’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 17th, at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE with Pastor Matt Hancock officiating.  Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park.

Obituary Preview: Helen E. Knight, 95, of Wheelersburg passed away Friday, March 4, 2022 at Best Care in Wheelersburg. Born on July 11, 1926 in South Webster to the late Ernest and Ella (Bauer) Seibert and worked as a bus driver and school aid at Happy Hearts in Portsmouth.
Helen attended school in South Webster and will be remembered as a devout member of Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene in Wheelersburg for over sixty years, where she enjoyed being a part of JOY Group and Small Group. She was also a Central Ohio District Assembly Delegate for the Church of the Nazarene, a volunteer of Meals on Wheels, and an active member of the Ohio Public Employee Retirement System. Helen also enjoyed traveling with family members and close friends with the Shawnee Trails Group, listening to southern gospel music, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death is her soulmate, Galen Knight, whom she married on April 25, 1956 in Wheelersburg; her brothers, Harold and Willard Seibert; her sister, Anna Katherine “Sis” Clifford, and many dear friends.
Surviving are her three children, Marvin (Jackie) Knight, Mary (Marvin) Grashel, and Wayne Knight; her two brothers, Earl (Trevelyn) Seibert, Charles (Holly) Seibert; her brother-in-law, Ralph Clifford; her grandchildren, Danny (Carrie) Knight, Shelly Knight-Boggs, Jason Cordle, Jessica (Steven) Wells, Brittany (Adam) Trimble, Adam (Katie) Grashel, Sarah (Max) Dunn, Aaron Grashel, Seth (Andrea) Knight, and Moriah Knight; her great-grandchildren, Madison Knight, Calob Hughes, Gage Cordle, Bryson Deemer, Easton Cordle, Kelly Wells, Carter Wells, and Charley Cordle; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A Celebration of Helen’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9th, at Cornerstone Church of the Nazarene with Matt Hancock and Kenny Speakes officiating. Interment will be in Vernon Cemetery.

Darrel B. Mershon - September 03, 1951 - March 04, 2022

Obituary Preview: Darrel B. Mershon, 70, passed away at SOMC Hospice, surrounded by family, on Friday, March 4, 2022.  Darrel was born on September 3, 1951 to the late Kenneth and Frances Ramey Mershon, in Portsmouth.   Darrel was a graduate of East High School and SSU’s Paramedic Program.
Darrel retired from United Parcel Service with 32 ½ years of service and served as a union steward for many of those years.  He owned one of the first lawn care services in Portsmouth, The Lawn Ranger.  After retirement from UPS, Darrel graduated from the SSU Paramedic Program and worked for many years as a paramedic for Portsmouth Ambulance Service, Kings Daughters Ambulance Service and, up until his passing, Rosemount Squad 12.
Darrel is survived by his wife of 20 years, Barbara Duncan.  Also surviving are his children, Chris (Jennifer) Mershon and Angie (Scott Hutchison) Mershon, four grandchildren, Chantel Lathrop, Cheyanne Mershon, Hunter Mershon and Claire Hutchison along with four great-grandchildren, Bryson, Easton, Alyvia, and Jayce, all of Knoxville, TN.  He is also survived by one brother, Steve Mershon (Candi Moore) of Granville, OH, one sister, Linda Moore of Portsmouth, OH and his very best friend in the world, his cousin Jim Ramey of Portsmouth, OH.
Darrel was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Frances Ramey Mershon and three brothers, Kenneth Mershon Jr., Mike Mershon and Kevin Mershon.
The family would like to thank SOMC Hospice for the extraordinary care that they provided, which makes SOMC Hospice the family’s most precious charity.

Mary Buffinger - May 26, 1930 - March 04, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mary F. Buffinger, 91, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, March 4, 2022, in her home.  Born on May 26, 1930 in South Webster, she was a daughter of the late William and Okie Adams Hanes.
In earlier years, Mary was one of the biggest supporters of the East High School Band and was a former treasurer for many years of the band boosters.  In those days, the band was very large and she made sure that there were sufficient funds for all of the needs.  But above all else, she was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 67 years, Albert J. Buffinger, Sr.
Surviving are two sons, Phillip (Tammy) Buffinger of Lucasville and Albert J. (Andrea) Buffinger, Jr. of Sciotoville; a daughter, Debbie Buffinger of Wheelersburg; four special grandchildren, Laura Simcoe, Mary Ann (Keith) Boggs, Jeffrey (Amber) Buffinger and Dustin Buffinger and her darling great-grandchildren, Elliot, Parker and Taylor.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 10th, at Wheelersburg Cemetery with Pastor Perry Prosch officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the East High School Band.

A member of Berean Baptist Church, she was in charge of the church prayer chain, active with the teens and Awana.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Yuenger; a son, Jeffrey (Morgan) Yuenger of West Minster, Maryland; a daughter, Kelly Yuenger Rice of Russell, KY; four grandchildren, Paige, Pierce, Derek, and Hayley and a special “S ister”, Marilyn Wilson-Parker.

Nile T. "Butch" Sanford - February 22, 1940 - February 09, 2022

Obituary Preview: Nile T. “Butch” Sanford, age 81, of Temperance, MI, passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at the Toledo Hospital. Born on February 22, 1940 in Portsmouth, he was a son of the late Clarence and Gladys “Goldie” Schuler Sanford.
Butch worked tireless hours to provide for his family, having worked at North Star Steel in Wilton, IA for 3 years, and many jobs in Monroe, MI for another 27 years, and retired as a machinist in 2005 after 15 years.
He had many hobbies, including golfing and fishing, and he had a passion for woodworking. He always made time to go to ballgames and many of his children’s events. One of his biggest passions was being a fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and never missed watching a game if he wasn’t working.
A 32nd degree Mason, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge #465 in Lucasville for over 50 years.
Butch was a kind, selfless man that would help people whenever they needed it. One of his biggest attributes was his sense of humor, which left everyone laughing as they went away.  He was beloved by many and will be so greatly missed. May he rest in peace with his beloved wife of 34 years, Janie, who passed away August 7, 2011.
Also preceding him in death were his siblings, Flo Gaines, Louise O’Dell, Helen Jean Fultz, Carl (Dick) Sanford, Vera Faust, and Donald Sanford.
Surviving are his four children, whom he loved very much, Richard Sanford, Jeff (Tina) Sanford, Gregory (Dawn) Koehler, Todd Koehler; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Thomas.
A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16th at the Rosemount Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Cheryl Lynn Adkins, 64, of Portsmouth, went to meet her Savior early in the morning on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.  Cheryl was born to Howard and Betty Adkins on March 25, 1957.
After graduating from Minford High School in 1975, she moved to Columbus, where she went on to become a cosmetologist, and later worked for Bank One.  Returning to Scioto County, Cheryl was employed by Lowe’s for nearly 30 years, retiring in 2019.  Cheryl attended North Moreland Christian Baptist Church and Seventh Street Christian Baptist Church.  She was extremely active in the Christian Baptist Association.
She loved traveling with her friends in Tennessee.  If Cheryl wasn’t cooking in the kitchen, she was on either watching Hallmark movies or on the front porch reading.  A woman of few words and a giving heart, she will be missed by all of those who loved her and called her “Aunt Cheryl”.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Howard Adkins and Betty Lou (Clark) Adkins.
Surviving are her sisters, Pamela (Gregory) Shonkwiler of Portsmouth and Mary Beth (Ashley) McGlone of Etna; her niece Arrika (Daniel) Mains of Portsmouth; her nephews, Andrew (Faith) Shonkwiler of Portsmouth, Levi (Anna) McGlone of Canal Winchester and Noah McGlone of Etna; three great-nieces, Josie, Jenna and Noel; three great-nephews, Gunnar, Remington and Kase; a treasured cousin, Carolyn Arnett and many friends.
A service will be held at the convenience of the family with Ashley McGlone officiating.  Interment will be in Wheelersburg Cemetery.
The family will receive guests at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Obituary Preview: On February 1, 2022, our fierce and wonderful mom left this world to begin her next journey.  Born on June 2, 1939 in Clay County, West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Clay and Marie Rogers Hathaway.
Also preceding her in death were her husband, William Kelley, Sr. and siblings, Kathleen, Billy and Richard.
Being the daughter of a coal miner, she learned how to manage any situation thrown at her.  Mom took that knowledge and passed it on to her children on how to be strong and overcome.
Mom graduated from Spencer High School in Spencer, WV in 1957 and married William Kelley on June 24, 1957 after, as she put it, “chased her around Murphy’s Five and Dime in Spencer”.  Dad always said mom was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen and was still saying it after 60 years of marriage.
After getting married, they relocated to Ohio and had four children; “Butch” (Carole) Beth (Paul), Scott (Debbie) and Laura (Shawn).
Mom worked for several years at Carr’s Jewelry in Portsmouth, but she was a mother first and foremost.  She then became Nan-Nan to Sara, Trey, Andrew, Joshua, Elizabeth and Matthew and later came the great-grandchildren, Aidan, Weston, Grace, Connor, Duncan, Nolan, Wynn and Capp.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4th, at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE.

She grew up in the small town of New Boston, where everyone knows your name and family. She was joined in marriage with James “Ron” Neal on April 9, 1977 in New Boston. She is survived by her loving and very devoted husband, Ron, a daughter, Jamie Jo Courtney of Wheelersburg, a son, James R. Neal of West Portsmouth, a granddaughter, Kylie Jo Vastine, two grandsons, Kole Vastine and Zach Neal, her sisters, Phyllis Thoroughman (Doug) of Portsmouth, Deborah Smart (Joe) of Chillicothe, Sandra (Steve) Tyree of West Liberty, KY
KY, and Colleen (Robert) Payton of Sandy Hook, KY, brothers, Donald Fannin (Tina) and Danny Fannin (Stephanie) of West Liberty, KY, her brothers-in law, Harold “Shorty” and Jean Neal of Portsmouth, Larry Ray (Sharon) Neal of Minford and Tim (Myra)Neal of McDermott; two very special friends, Edie Kallas and Erecka Mader and a host of nieces and nephews and great- nieces and great-nephew. Also preceding Carol in death were her grandparents, Bessie and Harlan Fannin and
Oscar and Lillian Fannin, two special aunts, Reva and Geneva Fannin, her brother-in-law Donald Thoroughman, her father-in-law and mother-in law, Harold and Belle Neal, and her brothers-in-law, Dennis Neal and Mike Neal.
Carol was a 1968 graduate of Glenwood High School in New Boston. She worked in the registration and billing departments of the Southern Ohio Medical Center, retiring with 26 years of service. Carol loved the Lord and loved spending time with her precious family. She also loved to play bingo and loved to watch game shows on television with her family, and her shopping trips with Kylie. She and Ron especially loved spending time with Shorty and Jean. Jean was absolutely wonderful to Carol when they visited her and Shorty. Jean always had a warm blanket ready for Carol when they came down and was so good to Carol. Carol will be missed greatly by all of her loved ones and friends. Carol was such an incredible lady, who was loved by many people.
A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 26th, at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE with Pastor Mike Gifford officiating.  Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive guests at Brant’s from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Joy was a very active pastor’s wife, having participated in church choirs and worked in the Ladies Spectacular, with sometimes over 500 ladies in attendance.  She was most passionate of her work with children in the church.  Joy was a cancer survivor and caregiver for her mother with Alzheimer’s and a son with cancer.
Surviving are her husband, Pastor Fred Mann, three sons, Stephen (Caroline) Mann of Wheelersburg, Jeffrey (Maria) Mann of Buchanan, MI and Scott (Meredith) Mann of Gastonia, NC; thirteen grandchildren, Evangeline (Dempsy), Isaac (Kacie), Stephanie (Jeremy), Christiana (Phillip), Moriah, Micah, Jocelyn, Lyndelle, Baughan, Brionnah, Raleigh, Ryder and Everly and eight great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Joy’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 15th, at Berean Baptist Church with Pastor Jeff Davenport officiating.

Jeff graduated from Northwest High School in 1970, and was employed by the Scioto County Engineer.
On September 26, 2006, he was honored with the dedication of the new bridge on Dixon Mill Road given the name The Jeff Danzer Bridge for his devotion and years of service to the Scioto County Engineering Department.  After many years as the Bridge Superintendent, he retired in January of 2015.
Jeff’s devotion and love for his family was endless.
Surviving are his wife, Sharon Sue Richey Danzer, whom he married on July 9, 1976; a son, Joseph David (Melissa) Danzer; a daughter, Missy (Greg Burns) Danzer; grandchildren, Josiah Miller Danzer and Ava Rose Burns; a brother, Chuck (Carol) Danzer, a sister, Barbara (Charles) Wagner; a brother-in-law, Darrel Lanthorn and a lifelong friend, Walt Johnson.
