Janet E. Arey - December 15, 1944 - December 26, 2023

Departed: 12/26/2023 (Monmouth)
Obituary Preview: MONMOUTH – Janet E. Arey, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away in her home, surrounded by her family, on December 26, 2023.
The youngest of five children and the only daughter of Clifford and Hazel (Hoey) Anderson, Janet was born in Portland, Maine on December 15, 1944, and grew up in North Yarmouth, Maine, in the home that her grandparents built. Lore has it that Jan was the first girl born to the Anderson side of the family in over 80 years and the town rang the fire bells in honor of the occasion. While growing up, Jan looked up to her older brothers; she fondly recalled her brother Dana “allowing” her to retrieve basketballs that ran loose as he shot baskets in the yard. As a teenager, Jan inherited the family work ethic by working at her father’s business building lobster traps to earn her own spending money in high school.
Jan graduated salutatorian from Greely High School in 1963 and graduated from the University of Maine in Orono in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in English.
During her freshman year, Jan met her future husband, Vernon Arey, when, as fate would have it, an alphabetical seating chart placed them beside each other in a history class. Jan and Vern married in North Yarmouth on August 27, 1966.
Following Jan’s graduation from the University, Vern went on to pursue a law degree at the University of Maine School of Law and Jan taught sixth and seventh grades at the CK Burns School in Saco until 1971.
Jan and Vern welcomed their first child, Jonathan Anderson Arey, in August 1970 and a daughter, Nicole Elise Arey in 1974. In 1978 they purchased a house in Monmouth, Maine which remains the family home and a place for their children and grandchildren to return to for visits to enjoy board game marathons, birthday, and holiday celebrations, and just for the pleasure of enjoying a visit with Grandma. Jan was always up for a game! Early on she and Vern enjoyed socializing with friends, playing Atari games, Jeopardy, and card games, and with family, board games of all types from Agricola to Ultimate Werewolf. No family game night was complete until Grandma claimed to be the “Villager” during a rousing session of Werewolf. With over 100 board games stacked in the closet, Jan was a fierce, but fair, competitor in them all – a trait which, much to her delight, has been inherited by her children and grandchildren. Jan’s favorite summer days were spent with her
family at a summer lake house starting the morning competing at Boggle for five cents a point, then later playing more games on the beach, cheering on “float wars”, and making S’mores.
And of course, there was Bridge. People outside the family will likely remember Jan at the Bridge table where she played with the same passion for competition as always and her motto was “Never let the opposition play it for a one or a two bid!”. Jan was owner and director of the Augusta Duplicate Bridge Club for many years, and she achieved the American Contract Bridge League’s status of Ruby Life Master. Jan also taught the game to beginners through adult education programs.
Jan always enjoyed traveling. She and Vern took many opportunities to make vacations out of attending bridge tournaments across the country. Some of her other adventures include a trip to Folly Beach, South Carolina where she zoomed around in a golf cart with her granddaughter, a trip to England to visit her son (where, after a spiritual encounter with a Peacock in Avebury, she was convinced that she had lived in a past life), a road trip detour to Broadway with her daughter, and her all-time favorite, a trip to Disney World with her entire family which was aptly named “Grandma’s Celebration”.
Jan had a passion and a talent for crafting, sewing, and cross-stitching that she expressed through the creation of heartfelt scrapbooks, Halloween costumes for her grandchildren, and handmade portraits of the family pets. Jan recently joined a quilting group where she not only made many beautiful quilts, but several new friends as well. Jan adorned her home with creations for every season; the beauty she patterned together with love will provide comfort and warmth for years to come.
In 2014, Jan and Nicole researched the genealogy of the Anderson/Hoey family and prepared a multiple set of notebooks tracing the family history from the Mayflower to the present. They were pleased to discover that they were direct descendants of the Mayflower passenger John Howland, and, they were slightly amused to discover that he was apparently distinguished by his fall off the ship (though was obviously fortunate enough to be tossed a line and hauled back on board). Vern, of course, reminded Jan of this lineage from time-to-time, which she suffered in good grace. Throughout her life, Jan believed in the magic of Christmas. Her tree was decorated with handmade ornaments carefully preserved through the years including a hand-made aluminum foil star that she and Vern made in their first year
of marriage. Jan built family traditions such as making Christmas Eve Cookies, enjoying a Christmas Eve Fondue dinner, and a Christmas morning celebration that lasted into the early evening, always completed with a homemade dinner with prime rib roast and Yorkshire pudding. The twinkle in her eye at Christmastime will never be forgotten.
Janet was predeceased by her parents, her four brothers, Dana Anderson, Robert Anderson, Richard Anderson, and Lewis Anderson, and a nephew Clayton Anderson.
Janet is survived by her husband Vernon Arey of Monmouth, her son Jonathan Arey and his partner Leslie Andersen of North Yarmouth, her daughter Nicole Arey of Windham, her three grandchildren Cassandra, Emma, and Jack, and several nieces and nephews.
We invite family and friends to join us for an informal gathering of remembrance on February 10, 2024, 1:30 pm at Janet’s home: 657 Route 135 Monmouth, ME.
Jan, “Sam”, Mom, Grandma, we love you “3”. Messages of condolences may be made to: www.finleyfuneralhome.com

Kenneth E. Page - March 16, 1939 - December 12, 2023

Departed: 12/12/2023 (Monmouth)
Obituary Preview: Auburn – Kenneth Everett Page, a lifelong resident of Leeds passed away on Tuesday December 12, 2023, at the age of 84. Ken was the son of Frederick R. Page and Inez M. (Carville) Page. He attended Leeds schools and graduated from Leavitt Institute, class of 1957.
On November 28, 1964, Kenneth Page and Frances Stanhope joined hands in marriage at the Leeds Community Church. Together they raised three children, two daughters and a son. They enjoyed 54 years together until Frances’ death on March 1, 2019.
As a gifted mechanic, Ken spoke fondly of his first job working at Marcotte Chevrolet in Lewiston. To support his growing family, he went to work at International Paper Company in Jay as a millwright, retiring in 2004. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club for International Paper. Ken passed along his mechanical knowledge to his son Mark. They spent many hours of Mark’s youth tinkering under the hood of a vehicle in the garage. Ultimately this led to Mark’s successful business, Page’s Repair.
In 1989 Ken and Frances established the New Frontier Farm where they raised beef cattle, sold farm fresh eggs and hay. Ken prepared a beautiful garden plot every spring for Frances. The entire Page family and many neighbors would benefit from the fruits of her labor. It was on the farm that Ken and Frances shined as grandparents by teaching each child the importance of hard work and a love of animals and nature.
Ken was very appreciative of the numerous homemade meals that his daughters and Tammy made for him over the past 4 years since Frances had passed. He was the first to admit that he was no cook. Ken loved chocolate cake and would always need to “square it off” after it had been served. This was his creative way of getting a second helping. Ken was proud of the fact that he lived his entire life on the North Road and believed he was the longest North Road resident. He found purpose in life simply by keeping busy. If you stopped by to visit Ken, it might take a while to locate him. Most likely he would be out in one of his fields on one of his many tractors. Ken will be missed by family, friends and neighbors. Kenneth Page is survived by his two daughters, Karen Adams of Leeds, Kathy Gleason and husband Edward of Winthrop, his son Mark Page and fiancée Tammy Veinott of Leeds, 5 grandchildren Travis Adams and wife Tori, Curtis Adams, Helen Schmitt and husband David, Molly Dow, and Amanda Richardson and husband Justin, 4 great grandchildren, Arabella Richardson, and Angus, Ethel and Hazel Adams, a sister Joan Williams of North Carolina along with a nephew, several nieces and cousins. Ken was predeceased by his loving wife Frances Stanhope Page, and wonderful son-in-law Mitchell R. Adams. Messages of condolences may be made to: www.finleyfuneralhome.com

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide an opportunity for loved ones to express their condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, burial location, and any charities or organizations where donations can be made in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are often limited to 200-300 words, while online obituaries can be longer and more detailed. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1-2 paragraphs summarizing the person's life and achievements.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes! Many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload one or multiple photos of the deceased. This can help personalize the obituary and make it more meaningful for those reading it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms, while others may require you to email or fax the information.

Can I write an obituary in advance?

Yes! Many people choose to write their own obituary in advance as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life accomplishments. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What is a self-written obituary called?

A self-written obituary is sometimes referred to as a self-obit or autobit. This type of obituary allows individuals to take control of how they want to be remembered and share their own story with others.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper, online platform, or funeral home. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a traditional newspaper obituary. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituaries can often be edited or updated by the family or funeral home.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This depends on the online platform or funeral home website. Some may keep obituaries archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 1-2 years).

Can I share an obituary on social media?

Absolutely! Many online obituary platforms provide social sharing buttons that allow you to easily share the notice on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms.

What is a memorial donation?

A memorial donation is a gift made in memory of the deceased to a charity or organization that was meaningful to them. This can be specified in the obituary as an alternative to flowers or other tributes.

How do I request donations in lieu of flowers?

You can specify this request in the obituary by stating something like: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to [charity name] in memory of [deceased's name]. Be sure to include the charity's address or website for easy donation processing.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, poems, or lyrics that resonate with the deceased's personality or spirit can add a personal touch to the obituary. Just be mindful of copyright laws if using copyrighted material.

What is a funeral notice versus an obituary?

A funeral notice is a brief announcement that provides details about the funeral or memorial service, whereas an obituary is a more detailed biography that celebrates the person's life.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for many years?

Yes! You can still write an obituary as a way to honor and remember someone who passed away years ago. This can be especially meaningful for family members or friends who want to preserve their loved one's legacy.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers, genealogy websites, or libraries that maintain historical records. Some websites specialize in archiving old obituaries and making them searchable by name or date range.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you may be able to republish an old obituary online. Be sure to check copyright laws and obtain necessary permissions before doing so.

What if there are errors in the published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published as soon as possible to report any errors. They may be able to correct the mistake and re-publish the revised version.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate someone's life and personality. Just be sure to keep it respectful and tasteful.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Gather information from reliable sources such as family members, friends, and official documents (e.g., birth certificate). Double-check dates, names, and spellings to avoid errors.
