Kyle Kempker - August 21, 1970 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: David Kyle Kempker, beloved husband of Rhonda Raylene Norcross Kempker and much loved Dad to Ella, Grayson, and Violet, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 53 on March 17, 2024. Kyle was born on August 21, 1970, in Clinton, Missouri. Kyle attended Holy Rosary School in Clinton through 8th grade and was a 1988 graduate of Clinton High School. Kyle was actively involved in Boy Scouts, attending Philmont Scout Camp in 1986, and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. During high school, Kyle played tennis and ran cross country and track, the beginning of a life-long dedication to running. Kyle was a competitive swimmer and swim coach during the summers. In his hometown, Kyle spent a lot of time on the Clinton square, walking there from his Dad’s office to get a hot dog and chocolate shake at Diamond Drug, cruising the square on the weekend with friends or Rhonda, and infamously rocking for 52 hours and earning a 4th place finish in the Clinton Sesquicentennial Rocking Chair Marathon, showing a penchant for endurance that served him well later in life as a marathon runner. Kyle earned an Associate’s Degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design in 1991 from Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri. He then obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Film in 1993 from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri.
Kyle met Rhonda in high school and started dating her at age 16. During college, Kyle and Rhonda stayed together, even when attending different schools, and ended up in the same place for good when Kyle moved to Kansas City, Missouri, to begin his film career while Rhonda was in law school. On December 30, 1995, at age 25, Kyle married Rhonda Raylene Norcross, age 24. Kyle and Rhonda lived the early years after marriage in the Waldo area of Kansas City. Kyle and Rhonda had three children, Ella, Grayson, and Violet and moved to Olathe, Kansas, in 2001, shortly after Ella was born. They raised their kids on Summit Street in Parkwood Hills, alongside a great group of neighbors. Kyle was frequently around the house, hosting and joking around with the kids and their friends, throwing birthday parties, and building bonds that turned schoolmates and neighbors into life-long relationships. In 2011, Kyle and Rhonda moved a short distance to the next neighborhood over, near running trails where Kyle logged thousands of miles, and backing up to a park, creek, and lake where Kyle and the family spent many hours together. The kids grew into teenagers and young adults and Kyle was the Dad who was always there, including putting his career on hold for several years to stay at home with the kids. Kyle was renowned for making Friday night pizza for any and everyone who showed up and for teasing and joking with the teenagers, sometimes even heartwarmingly acting a little like one himself. Kyle was always ready to talk about pop culture, movies, and music and could lighten the spirit in any room, especially with his quick wit or a joke. Kyle was a Cub Scout leader for Grayson’s troop, wrangling kids through meetings and campouts and building Pinewood Derby cars. Kyle assisted with the Blue Valley West band and guard shows for Ella and Violet, especially as a props schlepper.
Kyle had a long career in the Kansas City film and video industry, beginning with an internship with Take 2 Productions in 1994. He started freelancing as a Production Assistant, working his way up to become a Production Coordinator and eventually a film and video Producer and Assistant Director. Kyle was on staff as an Executive Producer at Third Eye Productions from 2002 to 2008. Kyle had the opportunity to work on hundreds of commercials, print ad campaigns, and web-based media for national, regional, and local clients, including Wal-Mart, McDonald’s, Children’s Mercy, Price Chopper, Sonic, the Buckle, Hallmark, T-Mobile and Sprint, Build-A-Bear, Kansas Lottery, Missouri Lottery, Gordmans, and many more. Kyle was the one who made everything happen on a professional set. His colleagues remember him not only for being organized and calm under pressure at work, but also for his great sense of humor. Clients, advertising agency executives, and creatives loved Kyle for his easy-going style and approachability. Kyle always had interesting stories to share, including about being on set with iconic characters and celebrities ranging from Darth Vader and Chewbacca to Chiefs and Royals players. A recent highlight was working as Line Producer for a 2023 Wall Street Journal photo shoot with a Chiefs player who garnered enough attention that Kyle experienced preventing paparazzi from gaining access to the set, alongside his daughter Ella who was on the shoot as a Production Assistant, the position in which Kyle started his career.
Kyle was a strong, competitive runner throughout his life, finishing in more than 50 events total. Kyle completed 4 marathons, qualifying for Boston during the Chicago Marathon in 2010, and most recently running the Disney World Marathon in 2022. He ran 23 half-marathons. He completed the Heartland 39.3 Series in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Kyle completed more than 10 triathlons, combining his love for swimming with running. He also ran many 10Ks and 5Ks, and organized teams for the Brew to Brew relay.
Kyle was a talented artist and, sparked by a stint at Johnson County Community College, began crafting wood sculptures mixed with metals at the college and in his garage workshop. He created many striking pieces from plywood, a medium symbolic for its ordinary function of being covered up or even discarded, with a grain and beauty that could be coaxed out from the wood underneath. Kyle admired the imagery of wood and trees, and all the things a tree can represent in our lives.
Kyle was an adventurous free-spirit who enjoyed traveling, hiking, and being outdoors. In 1991, he adventured around Europe with friends. Work took Kyle to many locations as well. For 20 years, Kyle regularly vacationed with Rhonda and the kids at Rocky Mountain National Park. Kyle initially carried Ella, Grayson, and Violet in hiking backpacks until they took to hiking on their own two feet. Hiking trips continued until the kids became young adults walking the same trails side-by-side with him where he once carried them. The family eventually summited Twin Sisters in 2022. Kyle enjoyed many trips with family and friends with favorites being Hawaii, Cozumel, Colorado, New York City, Disney World, California, and Branson. He also took time out for roads trips and side adventures with each of the kids. At Custer State Park in South Dakota, Kyle and Violet took an early morning hike together when both of them had energy that the rest of us were lacking. Kyle made a long road trip with Ella, moving her halfway across the country after a semester at the Disney College Program in Orlando. Recently, Kyle returned from a Spring Break trip with Grayson to Zion National Park and Antelope Canyon, where they hiked and kayaked through canyons and forged through a blizzard while listening to hours of music in the car.
The extended family has great memories of Kyle, spending time outdoors at the Norcross Farm, beginning from the time he was a teenager. Kyle was always up for tackling a chore, hopping on a 4-wheeler ride, or helping with finish work on a cabin for the extended family. He was there for holidays, including the 4th of July, where he was known for his annual less-than-graceful, but hilarious, lighting and release of a sky lantern where we always questioned what might go up in flames.
Kyle was active in church. He was raised as a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Clinton, Missouri, was a member of Red Bridge United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, from 1996 through 2004, and has been a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Olathe, Kansas, from 2004 to the present. Kyle was an active youth group leader at both Red Bridge and Grace, including traveling with the youth on mission trips, touching the lives of many with his personality and ability to connect with others. Steps of Faith, a small group from Grace, was an integral part of Kyle and Rhonda’s life for many years.
Kyle is survived by his wife of 28 years, Rhonda Raylene Norcross Kempker, his daughter Ella Jean Kempker, his son Grayson David Kempker, and his daughter Violet Olivia Kempker. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Donna Norcross, his sister-in-law Amy Norcross Wareham and brother-in-law Ryan Wareham, as well as his nephews Gavin and Corbin Wareham and extended Norcross and Hager family. Kyle is survived by his parents, David and Donna Kempker, sister Debbie Boeth and spouse Rick, sister Dana Poepsel and spouse Jack, niece and nephew Stephanie Willis and Nick Boeth, and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Clara Velma (Chrisco) Siegrist, and his father-in-law, Wayne Norcross.
Kyle loved deeply and was loved by many in return. Kyle will be profoundly missed by Rhonda. The two of them were tennis partners, enjoyed painting and designing rooms in the house together, spent date nights at restaurants, concerts, or at a bed and breakfast, enjoyed hanging out with and hosting their circle of friends, spent hours taking walks, and enjoyed stolen moments at home together playing cards or talking late into the night after the kids were in bed. We loved Kyle because he was outwardly happy, made us laugh, had an infectious smile and friendly brown eyes, was the life of the party, and was the first to ask how you were doing and the last to leave any gathering. Kyle will also be deeply missed by many friends, the kids’ friends, his church family, neighbors, and the Kansas City film and video community.
The family suggests contributions to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, via a memorial page for Kyle, located at: https://supporting.afsp.org/campaign/Kyle-Kempker-s-Memorial -Fund. Contributions may be made on GoFundMe, via the Kempker Family Memorial Fund, for the educational and other needs of Kyle’s children as they grieve, heal, and begin to rebuild their lives, or by check to Bradley and Hadley Funeral Home, 1410 DZF Road, Clinton, MO 64735.
Kyle’s memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at Grace United Methodist Church, 11485 South Ridgeview Road, in Olathe, Kansas. Rhonda, Grayson, Ella, and Violet will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 p.m. Following the service, we are holding a reception from 3:00-5:00 p.m., also at the church. All are invited to celebrate Kyle’s life through fellowship. Come ready to share your stories and memories. We will have a video highlighting his life and favorite music. The youth room will be open for pool, ping-pong, and foosball and the lawn will be set up with 9-Square and outdoor games as requested by Kyle’s kids to honor their Dad’s fun-loving spirit.

Jim Kindall - December 24, 1949 - February 26, 2024

Departed: 02/26/2024 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: How did a music loving hippie from California end up teaching high school/ middle school music in Kansas for 35 years? Let’s start at the beginning ….
James Haworth Kindall was the son of Beulah Annette Kindall ( a petite soprano from Ottawa, Kansas who was a working professional in California all her life) and James Vernon Kindall (a chemist and church organist from Canon City Colorado, who aided in the invention of plastics that kept the first unmanned space craft from burning up). Jim was born in Toledo, Ohio and was brother to Candy Hammond, an older sister.
When Jim was in the fifth grade, his family moved to California (so his dad could work on plastics at NASA). The ocean Jim found there influenced his lifetime love of water. As a teenager he and his friends would surf and spend summer evenings sleeping on the sand by a campfire, one of his favorite memories. Living first in San Diego, and later in Riverside Jim went to Polytech High School and was a member of the large ensemble and Madrigal singing groups. His vocal instructor there developed Jim’s voice and later influenced the repertoire Jim’s own choirs would sing. Their groups sang at special events all over California and recorded two albums in the 60’s. (Most people would be able to find Jim on the album cover, even without his beard which was part of his entire adult countenance).
After high school, Jim attended several universities starting at San Francisco State. (Yes, he was there during the “Summer of Love”, where they burned his dorm) While there Jim worked sacking groceries, taking great pride in his work, and spent a lot of time at China Beach. He eventually graduated from Ottawa University in Kansas with a Bachelor’s in Music Education. His Grampsy, B. Smith Haworth (Annette’s father) was a professor at Ottawa. Believe it or not, Jim began college intending to be a civil engineer…but eventually his love of music took over and he became a music educator. While getting his degree, Jim took short interludes and lived in Fairplay, Colorado where he ran a rescue tow truck, and New Orleans where he pumped gas and eventually managed Highway Oil. Lots of adventures and people in his life along the way, but eventually he ended up teaching vocal music at Chanute High School in Chanute, Kansas. You can imagine this long haired wild man riding to work on his motorcycle teaching his students to sing all the Beatles songs as well as the most difficult madrigals you can imagine! (Diaphragmatic breathing!!) After a couple of years Jim continued his own education and received his Masters Degree from Pittsburg State University. Not finding a job when he graduated, he worked as a hired man for a local farmer. (Which eventually led this vegetarian to raising his own pigs to supplement his income…a whole other story!!) After a year Jim purchased a “farm” of 4 ½ acres in Parsons, Kansas where he moved 6 sows, 4 ducks, a goat, and 2 dogs to begin his long and highly successful career teaching vocal music at Parsons Middle School and Parsons High School. The program began small, but soon lots of kids wanted to enroll in “crazy Mr. Kindall’s” vocal music classes. Jim found himself teaching as many as 150 students a day the joy of singing. He played the piano 8 hours and then went home to raise a huge garden, feed his pigs, make some wine, cook a huge meal, or take his beloved “Bob the Boat” to Big Hill Lake. (Remember his love of water—Jim was a ‘hot dog’ slalom skier, and he would tell you he owned a boat since he was 18). His vocal groups brought home many trophies from State music along with 1st place awards from national festivals. His soloists that qualified for state sang beautiful solos and found their individual voices thanks to Mr. Kindall’s. ALL students found a safe, secure loving environment in which to learn not only how to breathe correctly and hit the right pitch, but to treat each other with kindness and compassion. Jim would tell you he educated the whole human being – body, mind, and soul, and taught them to treat everyone with kindness and respect for every living and non-living thing. His students credit Jim with a lifetime of influence and often quote him …”Don’t Busticate the Magic”, “Bless your slickety heels”, “5 words – It Ain’t Gonna Worry Me’ and the ever famous…”That’s what my mother said----right before she died”,
During these years Jim was also busy being the world’s greatest step-dad (dad) to Chris Keilitz and Isaac Brewer. He loved these boys and raised them as his own, making them do chores, be responsible, but also taking them on great adventures. Chris will never forget learning to drive in Jim’s 1953 black Chevy truck, a manual 3 shift on the column with about 13 inches of play in the steering! Other lessons included eating healthy, cutting wood and of course how to back up a gravity wagon with pig feed! As any good parent, he also made sure he embarrassed them –recalling the time Jim made Isaac ride to the middle school on his old blue Ford tractor because the shop guy was going to fix it for Jim! He drove it down main with Isaac on the back, right in front of all the students hanging out…can’t you just picture it ?!!!! Isaac was mortified to say the least—but Jim thought it was just practical!! Chris’s wife Danise, their two children Nick and Jessica, and Isaac’s wife Penny learned the strong love of Jimbo and all his wonderful talents when they joined the family.
Later in life, Jim married his soul mate Ruth (Spielbusch) Kindall. Jim often called Ruth his “19th wife and Ruth would always reply when that it took him 18 to get it right!! They married on November 25th, 2000 in Houston, Texas (another story). As soulmates who worked together, co-directed musicals together, gardened together, traveled together everyone who knew them could see the love they had for each other. Memorable trips with students include trips to Winter Park Music Festival, traveling to sing at Ground Zero as the single group selected from Kansas, and Washington DC. Ruth and Jim also traveled the country together, most recently to the East coast to visit all three kids and take in a Broadway show.
When it was opening night for one of their musicals, Jim beamed with pride as Ruth gave the welcoming remarks to the audience, and Ruth sat proudly watching her husband accompany a 2 ½ hour show on the keyboards. At curtain call of the last show when their students called them up to the stage to show their gratitude—Jim and Ruth’s partnership, love for life, and love for each other was clear for the world to see. Proud of the contributions they made in the lives of their students together, they would be rich in memories for years to come. Jim retired from teaching after 35 glorious years. Marriage to Ruth brought another opportunity for “step-dad” love. Emily (Young) Kasprzak became Jim’s 3rd child, and true to form, he taught her many things…including how to garden, weed a strawberry bed, pick corn (another story), drive (yes—Chris – more driving stories), ski, and love life. Emily’s marriage to Martin Kasprzak gave Jim another son to love. The birth of Ruth and Jim’s grandchild, bubbly Miss Lucy Kasprzak, gave Jim a new name: “Papa”. Jim held Lucy the day she was born (his first time holding a newborn) and asked “when do they open their eyes?” to which Ruth replied “Jim! She’s not a puppy!” It was Jim’s great joy to watch Lucy grow. Lucy loved water (making her Papa extremely happy) and they spent tons of time swimming together in Papa’s pool. Many other adventures were shared and Jim was beyond thrilled when Lucy joined the Clayton Carolina’s Children’s Choir being their youngest member at the age of 6!!
The move to Clinton in 2015 provided opportunities for Jim to continue making music by being the choir director/ organist/ pianist for 5 years at Clinton Christian Church. New friendships were made and the joy of Jim’s music was shared. True to form, Jim and Ruth decided Clinton needed musical theater, so they directed 4 shows for Heartland Community Theater (most performances being sold out!!). Jim also funded and organized two Summerfests in Artesian Park because he wanted music festivals that were free for everyone. Their life together in Clinton provided new experiences, and Jim built new memories for many that will last a lifetime. Jim may be not present in his Earth body (as one of his students shared) and we shall miss his energy and heart terribly, but there is another warrior on the other side, and what a spirit guide he will be!! He’s probably up there somewhere--- teaching them all to sing!!!! Meanwhile, here on earth, as we hear a certain song, or raise our own voices….we will, each in our own way, pay tribute to Jimbo. Terry W. Cloud - March 26, 1962 - February 26, 2024

Departed: 02/26/2024 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Terry Wayne Cloud was born on March 26th 1962 in Clinton, Missouri to parents Marquis and Barbara (Houk) Cloud. He departed this life very unexpectedly at his home on February 26th 2024.
Terry spent most of his life here in Clinton. From doing farm work, construction, or cars our dad could do it all. If it wasn’t construction or car work, he was either watching TV and muting the commercials, or sitting in the garage listening to Pink Floyd or the Eagles.
Terry got to travel the U.S. during his time as a truck driver, he would bring back souvenirs for the kids and write Mary love letters along the way. In his free time home he would love to fish, hunt for mushrooms like his brother and dad did, and play ball with his children. He grew up playing baseball with his brother and dad and it was something he always talked about.
He was gruff, a hard one, to the outside world, but those who knew him got to love on the softer side. He cared and felt deeply, didn’t always show it, but he cherished those he was close to.
Terry spent the last years of his life caring for his grandchildren, Jordan and Greyson. He loved them with everything he had, they gave him a new purpose after retirement and mom passing. They were his everything.
He is survived by his children; Meladie Cloud (Mason) Nixa MO, Nicole White (Mike) Chambersburg PA, and Ricky McNabb Clinton MO; one sister, Paula Thornley (Mitch) Clinton, MO.; grandchildren, Paige, Jordan, Greyson, Kayleigh, Marley, and Brielle, as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins who all loved him dearly. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Mary Cloud, his parents Marquis and Barbara Cloud, his brother Lynn Cloud, and one granddaughter Riley McNabb.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2024 at the Bradley & Hadley Funeral Home, Clinton. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about their passing, such as the funeral service details. They also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the death and allow them to pay their respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and survivors (family members). It may also include information about the funeral service, memorial donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Some newspapers and online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that includes biographical information and personal anecdotes.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous anecdotes or quotes can help celebrate the person's personality and make the tribute more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and requirements. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with payment and any necessary documentation.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary, often with additional features such as guest books, photo galleries, and donation links.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms usually publish immediately or within a few hours, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes can be made to online obituaries relatively easily. However, printed newspapers may have stricter policies regarding corrections or updates.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer to keep the obituary private or restricted to certain individuals or groups, you can specify this when submitting the notice. Some online platforms offer privacy settings or password-protected options.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers or other gifts. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives or databases, contacting local libraries or genealogical societies, or reaching out to family members who may have kept copies of the original notice.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience and encourage sharing and condolences.

What if I'm unsure about what to write in an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be a daunting task. Consider seeking guidance from a funeral home director, writing professional, or trusted friend or family member who knew the deceased well.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or spirit.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you discover an error or inaccuracy in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. Be prepared to provide proof or supporting documentation.

Can I create a memorial website instead of publishing an obituary?

Yes! Memorial websites offer a dedicated space for sharing memories, photos, and stories about the deceased. They can be especially helpful for those who want to create a lasting tribute beyond a traditional obituary.

What if I'm struggling emotionally while writing an obituary?

Taking on this task during a difficult time can be overwhelming. Consider enlisting support from loved ones or seeking guidance from a grief counselor if needed. Remember to prioritize your emotional well-being throughout the process.
