Inocente Castro - December 08, 1931 - February 06, 2022

Departed: 02/06/2022 (Brackettville)
Obituary Preview: Inocente (Chata) Castro, age 90, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, February 6, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on December 8, 1931.
Chata is preceded in death by her parents Paula and Gilberto Luna; sisters: Otila Bracamontes, Aurora De La Cruz, Adela Meyer, Juanita Fuentes; brothers: Julian, Andres, Jose, and Ismael Luna; her husband’s parents Aldofo Castro and Ascension Castro; and her husband’s siblings Paul (Thencha) Castro, Henry Castro, Margarita Castro, Emily Castro.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 67 years, Jose (Che) Castro, her son, Gilberto (Red) Castro, her brother, Avelardo “Mickey” Luna and his wife Olga, her brother-in-law Alfredo (Chapo) Castro, as well as countless nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
When Chata was very young, she met and fell in love with Che. They married on February 20, 1955, and soon had their only child, Red. Most of her young married life, she stayed home to care for her husband and child. She eventually went on to care for her elderly mother until her passing. When her son graduated from high school and joined the military, she decided to get a job to fill her day at her neighborhood mini grocery store, “Fuentes Grocery.” With the extra money, Chata sent care packages to her son that were filled with canned meats, soups, cookies, and money– things she knew he needed. Chata worked there for a few years enjoying the friendships she developed with the people in her neighborhood. In addition to her time at the grocery store, Chata enjoyed bestowing love on her sister’s grandchildren. Her niece’s daughter, Becky, was particularly close to her and loved spending time with her and Da. It was just the distraction that Chata needed to make it through the transition into an empty nest. She retired shortly after her husband Che retired from his position at Rio Grande Electric Co-op. Together they traveled to Europe, Mexico, and many beautiful places in the continental United States.
Chata would walk across the alley twice daily to visit her sister, Adela Meyer. In the morning, the sisters chatted over breakfast, but the highlight of each day was the nightly novelas that were enjoyed best over hot coffee and pan dulce. Eventually their sister, Juanita Fuentes, joined them from Chicago, and these evening rituals awarded them the nickname “The Three Companieras.” They were each other’s BEST FRIENDS.
Chata was a woman of faith and regularly attended mass at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Brackettville.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022 from 4-7 PM at Brackettville Sunset Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian burial will be on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Brackettville.
Interment will follow at the St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Cemetery in Brackettville.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service arrangements, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the grieving family.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, military service, or charitable organizations they were involved with.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family members or close friends of the deceased write the obituary. However, some funeral homes or online obituary platforms offer writing services or templates to help guide the process. In some instances, a professional writer or journalist may be hired to craft the obituary.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content compared to traditional newspaper obituaries.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that provides a glimpse into the person's life and legacy.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased. Some newspapers may also accept photo submissions for print or online publication. Photos can help personalize the obituary and provide a visual memory of the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. You may need to provide the written obituary text, along with any accompanying photos or other materials. Be sure to ask about deadlines, word count limits, and any applicable fees.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional printed obituary. It's typically published on a website or social media platform dedicated to sharing obituaries and memorials. Online obituaries often remain accessible for an extended period, allowing friends and family to visit and leave condolences at any time.

Can I create an online memorial for my loved one?

Yes, many online obituary platforms offer tools to create a virtual memorial or tribute page for your loved one. These pages can include photos, stories, memories, and condolences from friends and family. They serve as a lasting online tribute to the deceased.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or obituary websites using keywords like the person's name, date of death, or location. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to historical newspapers or records that can aid in your search.

Can I edit or update an existing obituary?

If you've already published an obituary in a newspaper or online platform, it's generally possible to make corrections or updates. Contact the publication or platform directly to inquire about their editing policies and procedures.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some publications charge by the word or line count, while others offer package deals or flat fees. Be sure to ask about pricing when submitting your obituary.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial contributions in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial contributions in lieu of flowers in their loved one's obituary. This allows friends and acquaintances to make a meaningful gesture in memory of the deceased.

How do I handle condolences and messages from strangers?

If you're receiving condolences from people you don't know through an online obituary or social media platform, it's essential to prioritize your emotional well-being. You can respond with a simple thank you or ignore messages if they become overwhelming.

Can I share an obituary on social media?

Yes, many online obituary platforms provide shareable links or buttons to easily post the obituary on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. This helps spread the news quickly and reaches a broader audience.

What is the purpose of an obituary headline?

An obituary headline serves as a title for the notice and should concisely capture the essence of the person's life. It might include their name, profession, achievements, or personal qualities that defined them.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries can be lighthearted and humorous if that reflects the personality of the deceased. Including amusing stories or quirks can help celebrate their life and make the notice more engaging.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, gather information from multiple sources, such as family members, friends, and official documents. Verify dates, names, and facts before submitting the obituary for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituaries ahead of time as a way to control how they're remembered and celebrated after they're gone. This can also help alleviate some burden from loved ones during a difficult time.

What is the significance of including funeral service details in an obituary?

Including funeral service details in an obituary ensures that friends and family receive accurate information about visiting hours, burial locations, and memorial services. This helps them plan accordingly and pay their respects to the deceased.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary by reflecting the person's values, personality, or passions. Choose something that resonates with their spirit and legacy.

How long does it take for an online obituary to be published?

The publication timeline for online obituaries varies depending on the platform or website. Some may publish immediately after submission, while others may require review and approval before going live.

Can I remove an online obituary once it's been published?

Policies regarding removal of online obituaries differ between platforms. If you need to remove an online obituary for any reason, contact the website administrator or customer support team directly to discuss your options.

What is the role of technology in modern-day obituaries?

Technology has revolutionized the way we share and interact with obituaries. Online platforms have made it easier to publish notices quickly, share them widely, and connect with others who are grieving. Social media integration has also increased visibility and engagement around online memorials.
