Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to notify others of a person's death and provide details about their life, such as their accomplishments, interests, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to honor and celebrate the person's life, share memories, and provide information about funeral services or memorial events.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member, close friend, or funeral home staff member. In some cases, the deceased person may have written their own obituary in advance, which is often referred to as a self-penned obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, or other ways to pay tribute to the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and help readers remember the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. You may need to provide the written obituary text, along with payment information and any photos you'd like to include.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some publications offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge by the word or line. Be sure to check with the publication beforehand to understand their pricing structure.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, many online platforms specialize in hosting and sharing obituaries. These websites often offer additional features such as guest books, memorial candles, and photo galleries.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline can vary depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately upon submission, while others may take several days or even weeks. Be sure to check with the publication beforehand to understand their processing time.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. If you need to make corrections or updates to an already-published obituary, contact the publication or online platform directly. They may be able to accommodate your request, but this may depend on their policies and procedures.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the person's name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and is often longer in length.

Should I include funeral service details in the obituary?

Yes, it's common to include details about funeral services, visitation hours, or memorial events in the obituary. This helps ensure that friends and family are aware of these important dates and times.

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers or other tributes. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's memory and support a cause they cared about.

How do I write a good obituary?

A good obituary should be clear, concise, and respectful. Focus on highlighting the person's achievements, personality traits, and relationships. Avoid clichأ©s and overly sentimental language.

Can I use humor in an obituary?

Yes, humor can be an effective way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased person. However, be sure to use discretion and avoid offending anyone who may be grieving.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary or need guidance, consider enlisting the help of a funeral home staff member or a professional writer who specializes in crafting obituaries.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to republish an obituary on a special anniversary or birthday of the deceased person, contact the original publication or online platform to see if they allow republication.

How do I find old obituaries from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in storing historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers and records.

Is it appropriate to share an obituary on social media?

Yes, sharing an obituary on social media can be a convenient way to inform friends and acquaintances of a person's passing. Many online platforms also allow you to share links directly from their websites.

Can I create a digital archive of my loved one's life story?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to create digital memorials or archives where you can store stories, photos, videos, and other mementos celebrating your loved one's life.

How do I handle condolences and messages from others after publishing an obituary?

You can respond personally to each message or condolence note if you feel able. Alternatively, consider setting up a memorial page or guest book where people can leave messages and share memories without requiring individual responses from you.

What if I need additional support or resources while planning an obituary?

DON'T hesitate to reach out to your funeral home staff member or other trusted professionals for guidance and support during this difficult time. They can offer valuable advice and resources to help you navigate the process.
