Obituary Preview: Hazel Eloise Gillespie 97 went to be with her lord 7:30 a.m. Tuesday April 30, 2024.
She was the only daughter of the late Peter H. and Bessie (Knight) Trichell. She was born July 22, 1926 in Ruston, Louisiana. On June 29, 1955 she married Stanley O. Gillespie (deceased April 6, 1998). After graduation from Russellville High School, she attended and graduated from Arkansas Polytechnic College (1947) (now Arkansas Tech University) in business administration.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Janet L. Gillespie on August 31, 2022 and an infant sister, Thelma Louise. She was also preceded in death by a special cousin, Velma Wright, brother-in law, Julian Gillespie, sister-in-law, Alethea (Gillespie) Sturdevant, brother-in law, Robert Sturdevant, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She is survived by one son, Davis Harvey Gillespie (Laurie) of Waverly, two grandchildren, Anthony Gillespie (Lindsay) of McArthur, Ohio and Lauren Turner, and great- granddaughter, Miracle of Salisbury NC, four nieces, one nephew, the Velma Wright family, and a special friend and caregiver, Glenda Williams.
During her lifetime, she was a teacher, clerk typist, bookkeeper (at Arkansas Tech where she met her husband, prof. S. O. Gillespie) a procurement clerk for the federal government, a loving wife and mother. She became a child of the lord in her early teens.
She was an active member of the Waverly Church of Christ for over 60 years.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at the Boyer Funeral Home, Waverly with Pastor Derek James officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Union Cemetery, Bridge Street, Waverly.

Logan was born June 14, 1933 in Waverly, Ohio, the son of the late Frank Pendleton and Martha (Cochenour) Pendleton. On September 26, 1957, he was united in marriage to Kathryn (McQuay) Pendleton who survives.
He is also survived by three children, Allen (Jennifer) Pendleton of Waverly, Rodney (Tammy) Pendleton of Mt. Orab, Ohio and Rhonda Pendleton of Waverly; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; three sisters, Carolyn Sams, Roxie Cousins, and Lavonne Monroe; and brother, Larry Pendleton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Anthony Pendleton; daughter-in-law, Susan Pendleton; brother, Leo Pendleton; and sister, Nancy Cutler.
Logan was a Veteran of the United States Navy and was a retired welder. He was a member of American Legion Post #142.
A service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Obituary Preview: Kenneth D. Trusty, 78, of Piketon, Ohio, passed away peacefully Friday, April 26, 2024 at the SOMC Hospice Center in Portsmouth.
Ken was born September 20, 1945 to the late Virgil Trusty and Dorothy Trusty Holloway. He was united in marriage to Linda (Bobst-Rumfield) Trusty on July 22, 2017, who survives.
He is also survived by his children, Randy (Nicole) Trusty of Piketon and Angie (Josh) Dresbach of Chillicothe; stepchildren, Lora (Jason) Traylor of Beaver and Tim (Anita) Rumfield of Commercial Point; his grandchildren, Dallas (Baylie) Trusty, Drew (Kendra) Trusty, Hart (Danielle) Trusty, India (Bryn) McNeal, Tanner (Desiree) Dresbach, and Noah Dresbach; step-grandchildren, Robert (Gabby) Rumfield, Thomas Rumfield, Mathew (Lizzie) Smith, and Danielle (Dillon) Smith; nine great-grandchildren; a special sister-in-law, Beth (Joe) Fox; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Ken retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation in January 2000 after working twenty-nine years where he made many good friends. Ken loved all sports and especially loved watching The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cincinnati Reds. Ken was an alumni of Piketon High School, graduating in 1963. He loved his Piketon Red Streaks and rarely missed a football or basketball game.
He was a member of the Thursday Lunch Crew who met at Riverside Diner which included his good friends Eddie Ritchie, Keith Willson, and Carl Fuller. He also leaves behind his dear friends, Mick & Kay Humble and Jake & Vickie Mullins who were always there to lend a hand when needed. Ken loved babysitting his great-nieces Annie and Violet. He loved working in his yard and sitting on his back deck taking in all of nature’s beauty. He always looked forward to family vacations and spending winters in Florida.
Ken was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Jacqueline (Weichmann) Trusty; his second wife, Diane (Tolliver) Trusty; a daughter, Regina Trusty; his brother, Edgell Trusty, and sister, Carolyn Trusty.
The family would like to thank all of his home care team from SOMC Home Care as well as all of the staff at SOMC Hospice Center and all of his doctors and caregivers over the last five months.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 29, 2024 at Boyer Funeral Home, Waverly with Pastor Julie Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Cemetery, Piketon.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home.

She was born October 28, 1935 in Akron Ohio to Violet Alzina Michael Dewey and Henry Lenear Dewey. She was married to the Late Dewey Paul Phares Jr.
She is survived by her children Samuel Scott Swesey (Raelynne Kontras), Daniel James Swesey (Colleen Wiberg Myers), Cara Jayne Phares Pfeifer (Robert Pfeifer), and Dewey James Phares (Dee Phares); grandchildren, Samuel Swesey, Daniel Swesey, Jason Swesey, Shawn Swesey, Robert “Bobby” (Kaitlyn) Pfeifer, Jacob Pfeifer, William “Billy” Pfeifer, Katelan Phares, and Casey Phares; several great grandchildren; sister, Derona Dewey; brother, Leslie Dewey (Ginger); and brother-in-law, Sam Rockish.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and siblings, Lawrence Dewey, Audrey Fenn, Herbert Dewey, and Freda Rockish.
Carole's greatest pride and joy were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Carole was a talented painter and gardener. Her flowers surrounded her house and especially her back porch where she could sit and enjoy them. She owned and operated a greenhouse and would take vegetables to market. She was a member of the Waverly Garden Club. She had many friends who she enjoyed bowling and playing Bingo with. She loved helping out and would take the time to make sure her friends had what they needed. She often picked them up to take to bingo or seniors. She was loved by everyone she met. A special thanks to Tammy Linton for her friendship and love. The family would also like to thank Heartland Hospice for their loving care.

Mohr of Waverly and Jeffrey Alan Pence and his wife, Joy, of Greenfield. Tiana's radiant spirit was a testament to the profound impact of her upbringing. Tiana shared an exceptional bond with her mother. Their connection transcended the ordinary; it was a bond forged in the crucible of shared experiences, laughter, and tears.
She was engaged to be married to her loving and compassionate fiance, Joshua Robert Reed, who never left her side. She is also survived by two sisters who loved her with all their hearts, Vanessa Gayle Pence and Natasha Marie Richard and husband Evan; two stepsisters, Sara Livingston, and husband Robert and Hannah Lipscomb and husband Kevin; the world’s greatest grandparents, Robert and Ellen Mohr and Thomas Pence; as well as aunts, uncles, and many cousins; and her fur babies who were her world, Frankie Lynn, Brutus, and Lucille.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Gail Pence and her sweet Aunt Coleen Sizelove.
Tiana's heart overflowed with a passion for teaching as an Intervention Specialist, and her dedication to her students was like no other. Her classroom was a sanctuary of understanding and encouragement, where each student felt valued and supported. Her legacy as an educator will endure in the hearts and minds of all those she inspired.
Beyond her dedication to her students, Tiana possessed a deep and abiding love for animals, particularly her cherished dogs. Her dogs were not pets but her babies, each with their own unique personality and place in her heart. Tiana's bond with animals reflected her innate capacity for empathy and kindness, qualities that defined her interactions with all living creatures.
A memorial service for family and friends will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the Boyer Funeral Home, Waverly, Ohio.

He is also survived by nine children, Bessie (Joe) Powers, Melissa (Paul Williams) Whitt, Renee (John Rose) Whitt, Kathy Mitchell, Ginny (Raymond Setty) Whitt, Serena (Bill) Lindsey, Shawn (Jamie) Lindsey, Sherry Lindsey, and Herman Harrison; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews; seven siblings, Wilma (Larry) Hopper, Jason Michael Frey, James (Helen) Adkins, Linda (Bill) Lowe, Vern Whitt, Paul (Amber) Whitt, and Mary (Chuck) Kempton; his step-mother, Betty Whitt; and his former spouse, Stella Whitt.
He was preceded in death by his parents; the parents who raised him, Bessie, and Phil Riehle; and six siblings, Georgie Whitt, Ruth Dunford, Sharon Mullett, James Whitt, Pat Frey, and Randy Woods..
Dirl was a Veteran of the United States Army and was a retired employee of the Sutphen fire truck manufacturing company. He was an avid outdoorsman and flea marketer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and eight siblings, Edith Mae Lett, Alfred Rider, Eddie Rider, Raymond Rider, Paul Weldon Lett, Linda Harris, Jimmy Lett, and Laura Bell Lett.
Brenda loved to read and do crossword puzzles. She enjoyed going to church, collecting cups, spending time with her family, and when she was healthy, going to the free stores and soup kitchens.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 4, 2024 at Zion Baptist Church with Pastor Kieth Jackson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until the beginning of the service on Saturday at the church.

She is survived by two sons, Eric J. Sheppard, and Adam Lee (Leanna) Sheppard; two daughters, Tammy (Mark) Pittenger, and Lisa K. Sheppard; eleven grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren; a sister, Charlette Gilbert; a sister-in-law, Janice Long; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers, David Long, and Dale Long.
Carolyn was a homemaker, a member of the Waverly First Baptist Church, and loved to spend time reading her bible.
A memorial service for family and close friends will be 4:00 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2024 at the Waverly 1st Baptist Church of Waverly. Dinner to follow.

Gary Bruce Roberts - August 05, 1947 - April 19, 2024

Obituary Preview: Gary Bruce Roberts passed away peacefully on April 19, 2024. He was the son of Howard Bruce Roberts and Marjorie Reno Roberts and brother of Donnie Roberts, all who preceded him in death. Gary is survived by his wife, Alvita Ison Roberts, and five children. Ian (Joanne) Kearney of Waverly, Ohio, Seth (Ruby) Kearney of Beaver, Ohio, Ryan (Crystal) Roberts of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Brooke (Rory) Luce of Goshen, Ohio, and Blake Roberts of Cincinnati, Ohio. Gary leaves behind eight beautiful grandchildren, Makayla, Zachary, Declan, Kylan, Britton, Liliana, Grayson, and Mila whom they called “Papaw”. He is also survived by a half-brother, Johnny Roberts, of Piketon, Ohio. Gary was a 1965 graduate of Piketon High School and received a scholastic scholarship to Ohio State University where he attended for two years and later graduated from Ohio University after military service. In 1968, Gary joined the United States Army and graduated from the U.S. Army School of Military Intelligence in Baltimore, Maryland. Gary was a proud Vietnam Veteran after serving in Vietnam for two years. Gary earned a Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, a Bronze Star Medal with a Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with a Palm Unit, and a Vietnam Service Medal with one silver and two bronze service stars.
After his military career, in 1971, Gary joined Pike County Department of Job & Family services as a caseworker and started the first child support program. In 1977, Gary became a caseworker with the Pike County Children Services Board, ultimately growing into the position of Director of Children Services. In 1982, Gary led efforts to grow the Community Health Center program under the Community Action Committee of Pike County. By 2000, Gary had established health center operations in four counties, increasing staffing and services within the community. Gary joined the Pike Metropolitan Housing Authority in 2000 as the Director of the agency overseeing Public Housing and Section 8 housing programs and leading the development of a housing unit in Waverly, Ohio. Gary served as the Director for Community Action Committee of Pike County from 2012-2016. In 2016, Gary became the Director of Operations for the Family Medical Center program under the Ironton Lawrence County Community Action Agency and proudly served six years of service there. Gary returned to the Community Action Committee of Pike County as Acting Director of Operations for Valley View Health Centers in 2022 and finally retired in May of 2023 after working 51 consecutive years. Gary’s passion for his community and commitment to serve never tired from designing new programs to assisting those in need.
Gary also had a very active social life. Gary’s primary hobby was pitching competitive horseshoes. Gary was the Junior World Champion for four consecutive years. He was the Ohio State Champion in 1981. Gary was President of the Ohio Horseshoe Pitching Association from 2004 to 2024. Gary was a proud member of the Ohio and National Horseshoe Hall of Fame. During his tenure as a horseshoe pitcher, he became involved with Jukskei, a traditional South African throwing sport. Gary had traveled to South Africa and Namibia on at least five occasions to promote horseshoe pitching and participate in their tournaments. Gary’s promotion of the sport led his South African friends to compete in some of the World Horseshoe Pitching Tournaments. Gary also traveled to Turkey and Lithuania promoting horseshoes and Jukskei. Gary and the Reno Family have also participated in horseshoe exhibitions at Bob Evans Farm Festival held in Rio Grande, Ohio for over 50 years. Gary was an avid runner, competing in races for over 40 years including the Columbus Marathon seven times and the Boston Marathon in 1990. Gary also enjoyed playing basketball and was a devoted weightlifter for the past fifteen years.
Gary attended the Stockdale United Christian Church. Gary’s funeral service will be held at Boyer’s Funeral Home in Waverly, Ohio on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held -from 5:00 – 7:00 Wednesday, April 24, 2024, and one hour prior to the service Thursday. A reception for family and friends will be held at Stockdale United Christian Church after the funeral services. She is also survived by two sons, Timothy Wayne (Angel) Tomlin, and Jeremy Edward Mullens; an adopted son, Timohty Finch; two stepdaughters, Brittany Marcum, and Diana Tomlin; seven grandchildren, Ariel, Bryce, Bentley, Cataleya, Keely, Jocelyn, and Rayleigh; two sisters, Juanita (Kieth) Manning, and Brenda (Ted) Murnahan; a brother, Mike (Maryanne) Fitzgerald; and a half-sister, Camilla Fitzgerald.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Lisa Mullens; and two sisters, Linda Morrill, and Gail Whitlow.
Michelle was a member of McCoughlic Baptist Church, and enjoyed fishing, hiking, swimming, and farming.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, April 21, 2024 at Boyer Funeral Home, Waverly, Ohio with Pastors Ron Marcum, and Tim Alderidge officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Piketon, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Barbara Nickell, and five brothers, Everette Ray Montgomery, Eldi Montgomery, Joe Montgomery, Franklin Montgomery, and Jerry Montgomery.

Elaine was born June 28, 1952 to Marcella June (Shanks) Hilterbran and Elmer Lenard Hilterbran. She is survived by her husband, Hobert Montgomery of Peebles, Ohio, her daughters Krystal Lynn (Mark) Stulley of Circleville, Ohio, and Pamela June (Matthew) Daniels of Clarksburg, Ohio, and her 3 grandchildren, Piper Lane Pamela Stulley, Tucker James Montgomery Stulley, and Marci Lynn Daniels. She is also survived by a sister, Carol Ann Lawler. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Lynn Alan Hilterbran, and a special nephew Eddie Allen Robbins. She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and many friends.
Elaine graduated from Piketon High School in 1970. She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Hobert, in 1970. She was a member of Mt. Zion Church of Christ Christian Union of Popular Grove. She attended Ottway Church, as well as Frog Hollow Church. She worked for the Pike County Court as county recorder for 31 years before she retired. After retirement she worked part time in the offices of Ohio Valley Lumber in Peebles. Elaine loved being home and spending time with her family and cooking. She especially loved being Mamaw to Piper, Tucker, and Marci.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their love and support during her 4-year battle with ovarian cancer. We would like to send a special thank you to Carol and Ed Robbins, Karen and Bret Garrett and family, Steve Hopkins, Hope Brewster and family, Windy Snyder, Becky Radcliff, George Manly, and Margo Branscomb. We would also like to thank all of the staff at Adams County Cancer Center, Riverside Methodist Hospital, Brewsters Pharmacy, University of Cincinnati Hospital, and Heartland Hospice and a very special thank you to her Hospice nurse Misty Bock.
