Donald E. Rushton - November 20, 1946 - January 06, 2022

Departed: 01/06/2022 (Lorain)
Obituary Preview: Donald Edward Rushton November 20, 1946 – January 6, 2022 "In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” Abraham Lincoln
Donald Edward Rushton transitioned from this world on January 6, 2022, after a life well lived. At the end of a heroic and stoic three-year battle against cancer, Don remained passionate, steadfast, and dedicated to a robust love of life. Faithful friends of his local AA group remember fondly the boisterous laugh and ready wit that accompanied many friendly visits from a comrade who was always willing to lend a hand. A lifelong lover of the animal kingdom, Don was rarely very far from his beloved long-haired dachshund Lucy, or his 4 precocious cats. A native of Lorain, Don spent his childhood and teenaged years strolling barefoot along the Virginia Beach seashore, where his love of seafood was legendary. Don graduated from Churchland High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he is remembered for his smoldering good looks, his love of fast cars and his amazing energy. After graduation, he joined his beloved Marine Corps and served honorably in the Vietnam conflict, which changed him greatly and opened his eyes and mind to the ways of the world. He always cited the time serving his country as some of his proudest and most profound moments. Don worked over twenty years for the Ford Motor Company at the Avon plant. Employees and team members remember his dedication, his caring attitude, and his incomparable work ethic. It was not unusual to hear him referred to as “the best boss’ or “just a great guy.” Donald Edward Rushton cannot be summed up in a small number of words. He was a boy who overcame great and difficult obstacles to become a man of worth, and someone to be remembered. He knew no strangers, He trusted blindly. He walked in dark woods and stared longingly at the Atlantic Ocean. He was no poet but valued the music of words. He had a metabolism that was historic. He gobbled down food as he consumed life. It is a life that is less without him in it.
Don is survived by people who already miss him greatly and are painfully aware of his affect and influence on their lives. These include his loving daughter, Nicole Rushton Shinsky of Lorain, his sister Mary Katherine Rushton Dewing of Suffolk, Virginia (Andy, Hunter, Hannah, Kate Dewing), his brother John Spradlin Rushton of High Point, North Carolina (Casey Rushton Lehner, Kendall Nowers, Bronwyn, and Kira Rushton), his brother Mark Shaffer of Lorain (Doris), grandchildren Holly King (Brian), Alexis Beasley, Kwintyn Shinsky and great-grandson Nolan King. Don was preceded in death by his amazing parents, Edward and Doris Rushton and his beloved grandmother, Elsie Rushton Robertson
Private services and burial with full military honors will be held in April at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Friendship Animal Protective League of Lorain County, 8303 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria, Ohio  44035.

Departed: 11/08/2021 (Lorain)
Obituary Preview: Denise K. Bartlome, 63, (nee Steinbrunner) passed away on Monday, November 8, 2021 at Mercy Regional Health Center following a brief illness.      Mrs. Bartlome was born in Altoona, PA on November 19, 1957, the daughter of George M. and Dolores R. (nee Patterson) Steinbrunner of Lorain.      Denise was larger than life as a wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend.     She was a graduate of Lorain High School, class of 1975.   She was a cheerleader at Longfellow and head majorette at Lorain High.       In earlier years, her summers consisted of traveling with family to Pennsylvania where she would spend summers at her Aunt's house with her cousins bonding and having the time of their lives. She also worked at McDonald's on the east side while going to high school where she formed friendships both in school and work.      Denise spent much of her time living at the Jersey Shore with her husband Cliff and daughter Krystyn.  Denise and Krystyn loved the  shore.  She hosted many gatherings at her home for family and friends.  After trips to the beach, she would dust sand off the kids before they would come in the house which they got a kick out of.
Visiting Denise would lead to trips to New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and surrounding states where her and Krystyn would be the tour guides. She loved history and the arts.  While in Jersey, she worked at the Borgata casino.   Losing Krystyn brought her back home to Ohio and then she lost Cliff.      She was trying to be strong.  She introduced the arts to her family by taking them to shows at the Cleveland Playhouse which everyone so enjoyed.  She attended Black River Landing for most of the concerts which was then, that, she was in her element. She loved music, as did her daughter.  She loved discussing it with her nieces and they were receptive and they enjoyed it, too. Queen and the Eagles were just a couple of her favorites.        Denise also would love to debate,  which she did with her dad, nephew, friends and family.  Usually ended in a stalemate.       Denise was a great storyteller.  She could make people see through her eyes, feel and experience what she was conveying which was a gift.      While back home, she started working at the Senior Center in Lorain as the cook and server for the bingo concession stand where her mom attends.  She organized her class reunions and other events throughout the years.        "She did the best she could these past 14 years after losing Cliff and Krystyn and we are thankful for those years.  We believe she is where she wants to be."      In addition to her parents, Denise is survived by a sister Kimberly White of Lorain, two brothers George Steinbrunner of Lorain, Mark ( Lisa) Steinbrunner of North Ridgeville, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends that adore her.      She was preceded in death by her husband Cliff Bartlome on November 22, 2008 and her daughter Krystyn Bartlome on August 24, 2007.      A gathering to receive friends and relatives will be held on Sunday, November 14, 2021 from 1:00 pm until closing prayers at 3:00 pm in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052.      A Celebration of her life is planned for later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about their passing, funeral arrangements, and any memorial services. They can also help friends and family members who may not have been notified of the death to pay their respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, city of residence, and a brief biography that highlights their achievements, interests, and relationships. It may also include information about surviving family members, funeral arrangements, and any charitable donations or memorial services.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it's being published on. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased to accompany the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and share memories with others.
