Beverly Louise Ghiardi - June 24, 1939 - November 10, 2023

Departed: 11/10/2023 (Munising)
Obituary Preview: Beverly Louise Ghiardi, age 84, of Munising, died surrounded by love early Friday morning, November 10, 2023 at Medilodge of Munising.   Beverly gracefully fought dementia for almost twenty years.  She was born on June 24, 1939 in Munising to Willard “Boy” and Bertha (Hixon) Depew.  Beverly graduated from Sacred Heart School and then Wm. G. Mather High School in 1957.  Bev was the first female percussionist in Munising’s history.  She was a hard worker throughout her life and worked at the A & P Grocery store in high school.  Bev then went to work for Kimberly Clark shortly after graduation.   Her brother Jim brought his best friend and college roommate home for a visit to Munising.  David Ghiardi came to Munising as Jim’s friend and left as Bev’s boyfriend.  They were married on December 26, 1960 and together raised their three children.   The family spent countless days and nights with Jim and Laurie Depew and family.  Those cousins were like brothers and sisters.  Some of the family’s most enjoyable memories were at 16 Mile Lake being together and playing euchre and pinochle.  Bev had briefly left the mill to raise her kids but returned to the mill and retired after twenty-six years.  She spent most of that time in Planning and Customer Service, and Beverly worked alongside her father and her daughter Kathy at the mill.
Beverly’s favorite place was in her kitchen.  She loved to cook for anyone and everyone who came into her home, which was always open for anyone who needed a place to be.  Bev or Mrs. G. always made sure you were not hungry when in her home.  She not only loved providing food, but the atmosphere of love and friendship that the kitchen gave to her and those who were there.  She was famous for her macaroni salad and ribbon sandwiches, and her refrigerator was always full.
In retirement, she and David enjoyed their years traveling, playing golf, bird hunting, and wintering in Mississippi, Arizona, and Florida.  They were members of Sacred Heart Church.  With a smile and twinkle in her eye, she tolerated David’s adventures and the “something on your shirt” and contradictory yes and no head shake pranks that he pulled on so many.  Some would say that she spoiled him.  They spent hours watching sports, and Bev was not just a coach’s wife.  She understood and loved the games.   They were proud parents and grandparents following their family’s activities.  They spent many Mustang nights in the bleachers with Jim and Kay Landfair.  Beverly was a good bowler and golfer.  She enjoyed reading and taking long walks.  Beverly and David could be found walking whatever the weather.  She was famous amongst her family for having whatever they may possibly need in her purse or pocket.  Beverly loved being with her family and always paid for dinner even if someone invited her.  She taught them about respecting others and taking care of people in need.  Bev was open-minded, humble, intelligent, gentle, kind, giving and a great confidant to her friends.  Beautiful Beverly, as David would call her, always had a giggle and song in her voice.  On Friday, she left our world surrounded by the love of family and entered her eternal home surrounded by the love of family who went before her.
Bev is survived by her children – Tom (Peg) Ghiardi of Kennesaw, GA, Sandi (Dan) Reddy of Wyoming, MI, and Kathy Matson of Munising; grandchildren – Peter, Cathy, Caroline (Ryan), Liz (Brendan), Tony, Nick, Jesse, Megan, and Jenna; great-grandchildren – Daniel, Dominic, Alex, Connor, and Emma; brother – Jim (Laurie) Depew of Newberry; dear friend – Kay Landfair; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Beverly was preceded in death by her parents Willard and Bertha, her husband of over fifty-three years David Ghiardi on May 25, 2014, her granddaughter – Faith Marie Matson; brothers and sister – David Depew, Molly (George) Schmidt, and Jack (Linda) Depew; father and mother-in-law – Joseph and Rosalita Ghiardi; brothers and sisters-in-law – Dominic (Alice) Ghiardi, Catherine (Jack) Haupt, Peter (Eleanor) Ghiardi, and Gena (Gordy) Farragh; and dear friend  - Jim Landfair.
Services will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 at the Bowerman Funeral Home.  Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.   Deacon Tom Moseley will conduct Bev’s funeral service in the funeral home’s chapel at 4:00 p.m.  Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. Memorials are requested to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Bev’s name. http://www.alz.org

Shawna Grace DesJardins - May 03, 1965 - October 24, 2023

Departed: 10/24/2023 (Munising)
Obituary Preview: MUNISING
Shawna Grace DesJardins (nee Eckloff), age 58, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, at her home in Munising surrounded by her family and with her beloved wolf hounds, Shadow and Murphy, at her feet. She fought bravely but lost her second battle with metastatic breast cancer.
She was born May 3, 1965, in Long Beach, California, the daughter of Thomas and Sharon Clark. She moved to Marquette when she was seven years old and her mom married Russ Eckloff on January 14, 1972, giving Shawna six new brothers and sisters. She grew up in South Marquette and attended Marquette Senior High School, graduating in 1983.
Shawna married Mark Duquaine on April 20, 1985, and the couple had three children, Kaylee, Brenden and Eli. She worked at the Shopko pharmacy and was a star outfielder for the Duquaine Plumbing and Heating softball team. Many years later after moving to Munising she became friends with several of the players from the Munising Peppers, the team’s archrivals from many a contest at Hurley Field.
Shawna received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography from Northern Michigan University in 2007 and shortly thereafter began working as an office assistant at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in Marquette while working nights in the billing department of Peninsula Pharmacy. In 2010 she was promoted to eligibility specialist and assigned to the Alger County MDHHS Office.
She married Rod DesJardins on May 21, 2011, and the couple settled in Munising and united their two families. Shawna enjoyed hiking and two-tracking and boating on Lake Superior with friends and family. Some of her favorite things were rocks and sticks, leaves and feathers, which she collected at every opportunity and incorporated into her many crafts. Shawna excelled at crafting in several different media and was often encouraged to sell her work, but she declined, opting instead to give it as gifts to friends and family.
She was an accomplished photographer who specialized in nature photography and candid photos. Her composition was soft yet precise and she captured the beauty of our natural surroundings along with the laughter and joy of the people she shared it with.
Shawna had a kind heart and she hated conflict of any kind unless someone threatened a member of her family or someone she loved. Then she became a tiger and instinctively and fearlessly put herself in the path of any danger.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother who never forgot a birthday or an anniversary. She loved dogs and furnished and decorated her home to accommodate a loving pair of Irish Wolfhounds. She had an easy laugh and a keen sense of humor. Her smile brightened the whole room when she walked in the door and her kindness and fun-loving spirit was magnetic and contagious. You could not help but have a good time when you were with Shawna. Just being with her made people happy. She was the best of us, a loyal and supportive friend, and everyone fortunate enough to be touched by her gentle spirit is better for the experience.
She is survived by her husband Rod, her children Kaylee Duquaine of Gwinn, Brenden (Alexa) Duquaine of Marquette, and Eli Duquaine of Gwinn; Rod’s children, Samantha (Michael) Bell of Atoka TN, Victoria (Nick) Hansen of Grand Rapids, and Aaron (Franchesca) DesJardins of Norfolk VA, sisters Delynn (Ben) Klein of Marquette, Suzette (Ken) Hanz of Skandia,  Ruth Ann Eckloff of Petoskey, Dionna (Daniel) Dowdy of L’Anse, and Sheila (Daryl) Smith of Gwinn, brothers Ricky (Teresa) Eckloff of Skandia and Russell (Tami) Eckloff of Queen Creek AZ, granddaughter Trinity and grandsons Grayson, Tatum, Bodie, Alexander and Townes, along with numerous uncles and aunts, nieces and nephews.

Kristine Elizabeth Fromm - December 21, 1946 - October 13, 2023

Departed: 10/13/2023 (Munising)
Obituary Preview: Kristine Elizabeth Fromm (LaFave), age 76, of Rochester, Michigan and formerly of Munising, Michigan died peacefully at home on Friday October 13th, 2023 following a long illness. Kristine was born to Ernest and Katherine LaFave, on December 21st, 1946 in Munising, where she later graduated from Sacred Heart School and Wm. G. Mather High School. Happily married for 57 years, Kristine was introduced to Howard “Vince” Fromm II at an early age, and they were wed on September 3rd 1966 in Sacred Heart Church, Munising.
Kristine’s lifelong passion for all things creative began from an early age. Starting with her love for sewing and crocheting, Kristine’s skill allowed her to create unique clothes for her dolls as well as beautiful blankets for close friends and family. From here she developed into a very talented seamstress which allowed her to use her expertise in many aspects of her life especially as a mother and later as a grandmother. Kristine was able to make stunning outfits to her own design, costumes for school plays and Halloween, as well as bespoke curtains and cushions for the family’s beloved sailboat Sea Spirit.
Kristine’s talent, however, was not limited to just fashion, as she had a good eye for decorating, especially for celebrations and holidays. Christmas was her favorite time of the year and due to the number of family birthdays in December, it allowed her a perfect excuse to heavily decorate both the interior and exterior of the house. Every year, her home was adorned with countless poinsettias, traditional nativity scenes, and lovingly decorated Christmas trees finished with the most elaborately wrapped gifts placed underneath. Her attention to detail was second to none, which, when visiting the family home during the holidays, only took one a few moments to realize. However, she took her imagination past her own front door and annually would take the position as the Seasonal Display Designer for first Universal Mall in Warren, followed by Laurel Park Place in Livonia.
The attention to detail didn’t stop at keeping an immaculate home and decorating, as Kristine was also able to manage her Shaklee business, which she ran with Vince successfully for over forty years.
Most weekends throughout the warmer seasons Kris and Vince spent days sailing their boat Sea Spirit, something they enjoyed over a span of thirty years. These excursions, which took them throughout the Great Lakes of Michigan and beyond, often concluded at the restaurant in the Detroit Yacht Club where they were able to meet with friends and family to make the most of the long summer evenings. It was perhaps this hobby that fueled her love of different cultures and interest in travel. This common interest was something Kristine shared with her husband, resulting in a home filled with unique objects from all corners of the globe. Out of all destinations visited, Vince and Kris especially enjoyed unique experiences in Alaska, Egypt, China, the Baltic Sea, as well as extensive voyages around the Caribbean Islands. Kristine’s last overseas trip was to travel to England to celebrate the marriage of her eldest granddaughter, a memorable occasion she cherished.
To Kristine, raising her family was the greatest achievement and something that gave her an enormous sense of pride. Loved ones could feel this firsthand through her enthusiastic greetings and heartwarming hugs and embraces.
