Obituary Preview: Eugene Roam Dobbins II, affectionately known as Roam to his family and friends, was the eldest of two children born to Roam Eugene Dobbins and the late Denise Dobbins on April 29th, 1972, in Randallstown Maryland. “Genie” was a “Momma’s Boy.” He was the eldest of four siblings and they shared a unique bond.
During his youth he was on a traveling baseball team, had a love for swimming and playing football with the Baltimore County Public School System where he received his education.
As a young man, he held several jobs but committed to his career as a barber. He experienced great joy cutting hair and when you sat in his chair, you would be regaled with all the nuances in life as he saw them through his eyes.
Roam’s life was deeply driven by the pursuit of the simple things that life had to offer. He believed that it should be filled with morals, happiness and keeping family first, those were the values that would reward you with the riches in life, the things that money could not buy.
In July of 1994, on a blind date that was set-up by his very best friend, Clyde “Reiko”, Roam met his soulmate and best friend, Carolene “Cookie” Jacks, whom he called “Boo.” They had their only child, Malik D. Dobbins on June 28th, 1996, they were often called the perfect trio. Roam’s pursuit of happiness for his family gave him the firmness of purpose to ask for his “Boo’s” hand in marriage, so they wed on September 16th, 2006. Never one without a plan, he decided that it would be in the best interest of his family if they laid down stakes in a new state, so they headed off and sought what would prove to be a bountiful life in York, Pennsylvania where they planted roots by purchasing their first home and he created his very own successful cleaning business.
Roam shared such an auspicious life with his family and was head over heels when Malik announced that he would be having a baby with his fiancé, Bryanna Wollaston. Melody aka “Stink Butt” (to him) entered this world on April 11th , 2020 and “Popsie” was born. Roam felt that he had won the lottery, a loving wife, an upstanding son and the twinkle of his eye, Melody. A steadfast believer that family was everything, he always looked for a multitude of ways to provide for their happiness and security. All Roam needed was his family, cooking breakfast on Sunday morning, with his sous chef, “Stink Butt” Baltimore crabs, The Baltimore Ravens and above all, his vanilla Swiss almond ice cream, by Haagen Dazs (which he ate faithfully, 365 days of the year) as he settled in at night, with the love his life.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often used to share information about the deceased with family, friends, and community members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, provide details about funeral or memorial services, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance in writing an obituary as part of their services. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief summary of their life. This may include their occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. Some obituaries may also include a photo, quotes, or other personal touches.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, depending on the individual and the publication in which it will appear. Generally, online obituaries can be longer and more detailed than those published in print newspapers. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also a celebration of the person's life. Including a humorous anecdote or quote can help capture their personality and make the notice more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary varies by newspaper. Some may accept submissions online, while others require email or phone submissions. Be sure to check with the publication in advance for their specific guidelines and deadlines.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes! With the rise of online platforms and social media, it's now common to publish obituaries solely online. This can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option that still allows you to share information with a wide audience.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a printed obituary. Online publications may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Many online obituary platforms allow you to upload photos, videos, or audio clips to enhance the notice. Some print publications may also accommodate photos or other visuals for an additional fee.

How long after a death should an obituary be published?

The timing of publishing an obituary depends on various factors, including cultural traditions and personal preferences. Typically, an obituary is published within a few days to a week after the person's passing.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication's policies. Some may allow minor corrections or updates, while others may not permit changes once the notice has been published. Be sure to review your submission carefully before it goes live.

What if I need to correct an error in an already-published obituary?

If you discover an error in a published obituary, contact the publication immediately to request a correction. They may issue a revised version or publish a correction notice.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise that helps you reflect on your life and legacy. It can also spare your loved ones from having to write one during a difficult time.

Is it appropriate to include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased's spirit or reflects their interests.

How do I ensure that my loved one's online presence is respected after they pass away?

Contact social media platforms and other online services directly to report the passing and request that their accounts be memorialized or closed. You may need to provide proof of death and identification.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

Don't hesitate to ask for help from friends, family members, or a professional writer. You can also take breaks from writing and come back to it when you feel more composed.

Dont' hesitate to reach out to family members, friends, or acquaintances who may have more information. You can also consult documents like birth certificates, passports, or other records.
