Michael T. Menzel - August 10, 1947 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (Stevens Point)
Obituary Preview: Michael Ted Menzel, 76, of Plainfield, Wisconsin, passed away on April 21, 2024.
Mike was born on August 10, 1947, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, the fourth of ten children of the late Roy and Margaret Menzel. He attended Stevens Point parochial schools, graduating in 1965 from Pacelli High School.
On May 30, 1967, Mike enlisted in the United States Air Force when the Vietnam War was raging. The fact he enlisted at all was a story in itself. It was during a time when many of his peers were worried about being drafted or even avoided being drafted, and it took a special and unusual commitment to enlist. His plans almost fell through when he failed his physical because he had a perforated eardrum. That could have exempted him from serving in the military altogether, but instead he chose to have surgery to repair the eardrum so he could enlist.
Mike went on to serve his country for four years, stationed for 11 months in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam from June 1968 to June 1969. His work ethic was exemplary, taking no R&R time during his time in Vietnam. He was promoted to a pay grade of E-5 and eventually became a staff sergeant in September 1970 before being honorably discharged on May 28, 1971.
Mike graduated from the Truck Driving Program at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, Wisconsin, and drove truck for local trucking companies for a number of years. He moved to the Plainfield area where he resided for the remainder of his adult life, working mostly in the area’s agricultural industry.
Growing up in Stevens Point, Mike cherished spending weeks at a time during his boyhood swimming, boating, fishing, and exploring the lake and woods surrounding the family cottage near Hazelhurst, Wisconsin.
As a teen, Mike had the handsome, muscular physique of a football star and actually tried out for his high school team, but during practices he was more inclined to frolic with the little neighborhood kids nearby than to tackle dummies, and was (with his coaches' encouragement) more than happy to “retire” from athletics.
One of Mike’s lifelong passions was cars, especially Jeeps, sporty V8s, and most recently his beloved 2018 Ford Escape. He was a natural-born mechanic and, back in the day, could patiently and systematically dismantle and reassemble a carburetor with the best of them. In his later years he purchased a Shelby Cobra replica kit car, a Ford V8 engine block and 4-speed manual transmission, envisioning a two-seater dream car that he would build himself and drive off into a golden sands sunset. Unfortunately, with advancing age and declining health, he ran out of time to make his beautiful dream come true.
Mike enjoyed his humble two-acre dwelling on the outskirts of Plainfield, leading a simple, solitary life with tall trees and lilac bushes flourishing nearby. Each spring he recorded the date on his calendar of the first blooming daylily in his yard and the return of the first hummingbird. He loved dogs, too, especially his Spike and Cale. After they died, he continued his special canine connection by dog-sitting for his neighbors.
Those who knew Mike well knew that some of his favorite stops in Stevens Point were Bill's Pizza, Ski’s Meat Market, Kwik Trip, Fleet Farm, and Dan’s Liquor Dispensary, where he would pick up an occasional bottle of Kessler's to complement a jug of orange juice. Those stops almost always included brief but memorable chats with the employees, who enjoyed seeing him. Although he was strong-minded, especially in his political beliefs, Mike had a soft heart for family, friends and anyone who knew him.
Mike is survived by seven siblings: Rev. William Menzel, Wisconsin Rapids, WI; Kathryn (Charles) Collins, Appleton, WI; James (Sharon) Menzel, Stevens Point; Fritz (Carol) Menzel, Stevens Point; Janet Jurgella (Eric) Finn, Stevens Point, WI; Stephen (Wendy) Menzel, Stevens Point; Daniel Menzel, Stevens Point; former brother-in-law Ron Jurgella; eight nieces, seven nephews, and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Mary Sue and Thomas Roy, and a nephew, Luke Glennon Collins.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Mike’s life on Wednesday, May 8, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Boston Funeral Home, 1649 Briggs Street, Stevens Point. There will be a brief prayer service at 6:00 p.m.
Always honoring the country he loved and served, Mike kept a light shining on the American flag he flew on a pole at the back of his yard, easily visible by passers-by on Interstate 39. Mike once shared his thoughts on the beauty of the sunrise and the sunset this way: All that fire at both ends of the day shows us how small
we really are.

Betty J. Konopacky - February 09, 1923 - April 12, 2024

Departed: 04/12/2024 (Stevens Point)
Obituary Preview: Betty J. Konopacky, age 101, of Stevens Point, WI, died peacefully on April 12, 2024, in her home, with her devoted son, Paul at her side.
Betty was born on February 9, 1923 to the late Arthur and Minnie (Burke) Held at the hospital in Medford, WI. As a young child she lived in Athens and Abbotsford until the family relocated to Stevens Point, just in time for Betty to attend the 5th grade. She also attended Emerson School, before attending and graduating from the new PJ Jacobs High School in 1940. After high school, Betty attended Central Wisconsin Teachers College for 3 years before dropping out to move to Milwaukee.
While in Milwaukee, Betty lived with three girlfriends in a one-bedroom apartment. She worked for Perfex, manufacturing lenses for the U.S. Norden bombsights used by aerial assault bombers during WWII. She later transitioned into photography, and worked together with her high school sweetheart, Robert P. Konopacky, also living in Milwaukee at this time, developing photos for the couple's nightclub photography business at the East Town and Pink Pig nightclubs.
Betty and Robert were married on July 23, 1945, in Woodstock, IL. Soon after that, Robert was inducted into the U.S. Army Airforce and was assigned to serve in Germany. Betty later relocated to Schlangenbad, Germany as a dependent, to be closer to her husband while he served there.
After Robert’s honorable discharge in 1948, Betty and Robert settled in Stevens Point, where they started a photofinishing business in their basement, which grew and eventually became Mid-State Photo. During this time, Betty also dedicated her time to raising the couple’s four children and pursuing her passions of gardening and music. In 1972, the couple sold the flourishing photofinishing business, but Betty continued working for the new owners for many years. After retiring, Betty worked part time as a bookkeeper for her son Bob, at Tri-Star Foto, and for her son Kevin, at Motors & Controls of Wisconsin, LLC.
At the age of 99, Betty was honored to receive her associate degree from UWSP in recognition of her three years of studies, cut short by her move to Milwaukee to support the war effort.
Music was central in Betty’s life. She learned to play the accordion at a young age from her father. Betty later learned to play piano and organ, and the clarinet, the instrument she played in the high school band where she met her future husband. She continued playing clarinet in college, and then in the Stevens Point City Band for many years. During this time, she also enjoyed performing with a local accordion band.
Betty was an avid gardener, tending multiple beautiful flower and vegetable gardens on the acreage surrounding her home on Springville.
Betty treasured all of her four-legend companions, including her cat and her four standard poodles; and they all adored her too. She enjoyed attending UWSP basketball games and City Band concerts in her older years. Most importantly, Betty loved her family and cherished spending time with them. She and the family members spent many hours and shared lots of laughs together playing cribbage and solitaire.
Survivors include her children, Robert (Teresa Rucinski) Konopacky Jr., Paul (family friend Dorice) Konopacky, Kevin (Cheryl) Konopacky, and Jill (Steve Schultz) Konopacky; close friend and caregiver, Mary (Tim) Higgins; grandchildren, Myndi (Brian) Margan, Bob (Amy) Konopacky, Ryan Konopacky, Jane (Scott) Schmiedel, Alex (Kyndra) Konopacky, Krysti Konopacky, Kolby Konopacky, Kahner Konopacky, Bethany (Russell) Law, and Steffani (Garrett) Wroblewski; great grandchildren, Josie, Daniel, Phoebe, Sophie, Kaitlin, Max, Mia, Tarnia, Jynix, Savita, Aethix, Voyan, Zayin, Aria, and Chanson; and many nieces and nephews.

O. Scott Halverson - September 17, 1946 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Stevens Point)
Obituary Preview: O. Scott Halverson, passed away at the Marshfield Medical Center, on the morning of April 8, 2024, at the age of 77.
Many knew him as Orv, The Big O, Salty, Scotty, or Orville (we think only by his hunting buddy, Mike Disher).
He was born September 17, 1946, in Hancock, Wis. to Eleanor M. (née Lane) Halverson-Fredrick and Orville E. Halverson. Scott had three sisters: Connie,(Krakow) Judi (Holder), and Sally (Worzalla).
In his younger years, he loved spending time at his grandfather’s (Dr. E.L.Lane) cottage on Fish Lake where he played, fished, and enjoyed the summers with all of his family members, his good friend Johnny Holder, lots of buddies, and, the closest thing to a brother, his first cousin, Steve Wandrey.
Scott loved cars and horsepower, which was a love and interest he found early and stayed with him through his entire life. He picked pickles (cucumbers for those of you who must) for about 50 cents or so, he says, and loved the Lonar Roller Rink on Old Hwy 51 just north of Hancock.
One of his favorite memories when he was younger was driving with his dad, who he lost at 18, to Two Lakes for a pizza, which they would bring back to Hancock.
He attended grade school in Hancock and attended Tri-County High School and was proud to be a Penguin (which he said with enthusiasm and sarcasm simultaneously). He graduated in 1965 and held various jobs until he volunteered for service in the U.S. Army and enlisted February 14, 1966.
He was activated, attended basic training in Texas, and was sent to Vietnam, where he served in combat with the 633rd CC&S Company in Cam Ranh Bay, until he was honorably discharged, later in 1968. Scott was always very sensitive to the cause of Vietnam Veterans who were not welcomed home and treated with the respect they so deserved and earned.
After Vietnam, Scott was employed in Janesville at GM, spent time at the Belvidere assembly, and in 1969 was hired by the Wisconsin DNR Fire Control for fighting forest/wildland fires throughout Central and Northern Wisconsin, where we are told he also dressed up like Smokey (The) Bear, at various parades and events to promote fire safety. Scott was also a heavy equipment operator for the DNR.
During that time, he could also be found at The Outer Limits, Poor Henry’s, The Brat Barn, and other various locations in the 1970s like Mr. Lucky’s, where he could put on quite a show on the disco dance floor.
Scott was hired by the Stevens Point Fire Department in 1973 where he served until the year 2000 reaching the rank of company officer/captain. Scott fought many fires like the Northside IGA fire and the Top Hat Bar fire, where he found and kept a shot glass in his helmet for years up until the last day when he retired, when it fell and broke (John and Marie forgave him for the theft!!). He loved serving on the ambulance with Fuzzy, Geno, George, Dorny, and too many more to name.
He especially loved his time on the department with his good friend Jay Gordon, and, of course, razzing any new rookie who would come on the department, like future Chief Tracy Kujawa and future Lt. Ron Heibler, who would later save his life and extend his time with family just three weeks ago.
The fire service was truly at the core of who Orv was: FDNY 911 was his license plate in honor of so many in the fire service that died in the line of duty that day.
Scott enjoyed racing more than any other pastime, watching the Packers and college basketball being a close second. He loved racing with his good friend Fluff Furo and driving the car hauler and being on the pit crew for Dick Trickle and running the ambulance at Golden Sands Speedway throughout the 1970s and early ’80s.
Scott was also an avid snowmobiler and Ski-Doo fan. He raced at Eagle River in the 1970s with his Ski-Doo Blizzard, the same sled he so proudly pointed out, was the sled that his son at age 6 or 7 took up to about 70-80 mph on Oneida Lake. Anything that had horsepower, torque and speed was exactly right up his alley.
Scott would also so often reminisce about the great times (and Manhattans) he had deer hunting with the Disher boys up in Glidden, and the times he and Kim spent with Tammy and Rich at Badger Games. Scott was especially touched by being able to be on The Never Forgotten Honor Flight in 2018 and visit the Vietnam Memorial.
On October 26, 1974, Scott married Kim M. Kraft at St. Peter’s Church and called Stevens Point home ever since then.
They enjoyed their time together through camping trips with friends, packer games, dart leagues, bowling leagues, traveling, spending time up north, and serving together in so many organizations. Kim and Scott enjoyed numerous firefighter conventions and countless campfires together and most importantly, their grandchildren Alex, Mason, and Elise. Just last year they were able to fulfill a life-long dream of being able to see and experience Alaska on a cruise.
NASCAR, The Green Bay Packers, horsepower, Old Thompson’s, deer hunting, and patriotism, really define who The Big O was. Scotty was a lifetime member of AMVETS Post 1051 where he served multiple tours as Commander, Stevens Point American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and most proudly, Plover VFW Post 10262 where he also served as Commander and for years on the Honor Guard and Rifle Squad. Scott was also a member of the Stevens Point Elks Lodge BPOE #641.
He so loved watching his grandkids play football, basketball, or run track. He especially loved bringing donuts in the morning for his granddaughter Elise, his little “Tootie Frootie” on the mornings he would come and sit with her before school, then insist on driving her the the blocks to school.
Orv, The Salty Dog, will be missed by so many. His unwavering humor, harsh tongue, and honesty will be tough to match for anyone…and the shine on his vehicle will be hard to replace.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years Kim Halverson; son, Andrew (Shana) Halverson; three grandchildren, Alex, Mason, and Elise Halverson; his sister, Sally (née Halverson) Worzalla and nieces, Tamara Holmes (Rich Sweet), Loni Holder, Lori Holder Moore, and Janelle Holmes-Lane; and nephew Barkley Holder.
He was preceded in death by his mother Eleanor, father Orville (Ole), sisters Connie and Judi, and nephew Scott.
Visitation will be held at Boston Funeral Home on Friday, April 12, from 4-7 p.m. with a Fire Department Honor Guard, followed by a visitation from 10-11 a.m. at Boston Funeral Home on Saturday, April 13, with a VFW ritual at 11 a.m. Memorial Services will follow at 11:15 led by his niece, Rev. Leiloni Holder, with procession and burial following at Guardian Angel Cemetery with military and fire department honors.

Herbert T. Wievel - January 11, 1961 - March 07, 2024

Departed: 03/07/2024 (Stevens Point)
Obituary Preview: Herbert (Herb) Tad Wievel, passed away on March 7th, 2024, as a result of a tragic accident.
He was born the baby of the family on January 11th,1961, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, to Bernard “Friday” Wievel and Jessie Thomas Wievel.
Herb attended the Campus Laboratory School through 5th grade, Jackson Elementary School, Ben Franklin Junior High and graduated from Stevens Point Area Senior High in 1979. Herb attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, graduating in 1984 with a Fine Arts degree. Herb returned to UWSP for a second degree in Natural Resources.
Herb moved to Minneapolis, working on art and writing music, but he missed his family and the woods and the river he grew up on. He returned to Stevens Point where he spent most of his time outside, hunting, fishing and canoeing. Herb was a North Star kind of a person—if you were around him, you could find your own way back.
Herb’s life was lived through a million small gestures of kindness. He provided care for his aging parents, his garden, for creatures great and small, and could be found walking outside, looking for birds and offering an easy smile. Herb was a Renaissance man: a talented artist, guitar player, dog trainer, and naturalist. Everyone saved his greeting cards where he would draw funny cartoons and make jokes.
Herb will be deeply missed by his significant other of eight years, Lisa. Together they shared a special close bond, enjoying the simple pleasures of life on a daily basis.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Friday and Jessie, as well as his older brother, Randy.
He is survived by: his significant other, Lisa Zdroik of Stevens Point, WI; sister, Beth (Bruce) Slapper of Gilbert, AZ; brother, Jeb (Karla) Wievel of Stevens Point, WI; nephews, Garret Slapper of Tempe, AZ, Landry Slapper of Carbondale, CO, and Jake Wievel of Madison, WI; nieces, Emily (Chris) Wievel of Eau Claire, WI, and Tess (Ryan) Williams of Thermopolis, WY. Herb is survived by great-nephews Noah and Rhett Williams, and great-niece Claira Williams of Thermopolis, WY.
The family would like to thank the exceptional and compassionate staff at the medical and surgical trauma unit at Aspirus in Wausau while Herb was there. Herb’s gift of life through organ donation is a testament to his generous spirit. The family has been touched by the West Side neighborhood’s sympathy and support. The family also recognizes the diligent work on behalf of the Stevens Point Police Department and first responders, and they will be forever grateful for their dedication.
There is a Celebration of Life planned for Herb on Wednesday, June 19th at Pfiffner Pioneer Park’s Pfiffner Building (1100 Crosby Ave, Stevens Point, WI) from 2-5pm. In honor of Herb’s lifelong love of nature and birds, checks can be made payable to: Aldo Leopold Chapter Audubon Society, PO Box 928, Stevens Point, WI, 54481. On the memo line, please specify “ALAS Endowment Fund”.
