Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to share the news of a person's death with others, providing essential details about their life and legacy. It also serves as a way to honor and celebrate the deceased person's life, while offering condolences to their loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased person. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to complete.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or special requests.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries may allow for longer tributes or stories.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's death, usually including only the essential details such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more extensive information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is possible to write your own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise, allowing you to reflect on your life and achievements. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your loved ones may still need to add or modify information after your passing.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. They may require specific information or formatting for publication.

How long are obituaries kept online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.
