Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of a person's life and can be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or other organization. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, and information about their family, such as spouse, children, and siblings. It may also include details about their occupation, hobbies, achievements, and any notable awards or recognition.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful to those who knew the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication. You can usually find guidelines on the publication's website or by contacting them directly. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the notice.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

How do I word a request for charitable donations in an obituary?

What if I want to keep the funeral private but still want to publish an obituary?

You can certainly publish an obituary without including funeral service details. Simply omit that information and focus on celebrating the person's life instead.

Can I publish an obituary for someone who has been deceased for some time?

Yes! While it's more common to publish an obituary shortly after someone passes away, there's no rule against publishing one at a later date. This can be especially helpful for those who may not have had access to this type of notice at the time of death.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

DON'T WORRY! Funeral homes, clergy members, or other professionals involved in planning funeral services can often provide guidance on what information to include in an obituary. You can also ask friends or family members for input.

Is it possible to publish an anonymous obituary?

In most cases, no. Obituaries typically require verification of identity and relationship to ensure accuracy and prevent fraudulent notices. However, there may be exceptions in certain circumstances such as when privacy concerns are involved.
