James Grant Gurley - November 26, 1980 - April 18, 2024

Departed: 04/18/2024 (Kirkwood)
Obituary Preview: James Grant Gurley passed away on April 18, 2024. While leaving us far too soon at age 43, Grant left a trail of accomplishments, friends and memories that will live far beyond his years.
Please join the family in celebrating Grant’s life on Saturday, May 4 starting at 2 p.m. It will be held at the home of Drew and Carrie Gurley, 16438 Sundance Creek Ct., Wildwood, MO 63005.
Athletics was his passion and love. He played on two state championship teams at CBC High School in St. Louis: hockey and lacrosse. He also later coached CBC and Lindbergh High School lacrosse teams, with Lindbergh winning its first-ever state championship while he was on staff.
Grant was a highly-focused athlete. Unlike many of his peers, he chose to devote the majority of his time to one sport at a time. The first was baseball. He was a gifted fielder with a strong, accurate arm. Grant gave up baseball for hockey, starting his journey at the Affton Athletic Association. He was a prolific goal scorer and played on many winning travel teams at Affton. His greatest moment was scoring three goals in the last minute of a game against Webster Groves, the final game-winner coming with three seconds left. He continued that hockey journey at CBC and was able to play with some of the greatest players in the state as teammates.
Grant moved on from hockey after his junior year at CBC to join the school’s first lacrosse team. Like many of his teammates, he had never played lacrosse. The team was made up of many of his hockey teammates, who were no strangers to a tough, hard-hitting sport. While he was a goal scorer in hockey, he chose to play defense in lacrosse and became one of the team’s best defenders and passers. He loved stops and assists. Grant went on to be a key member of the Southern Illinois University club lacrosse team.
What tops all of these moments was Grant’s devotion to coaching and teaching lacrosse after his playing days. He became a student of the game. Grant not only loved working with the kids, but he really enjoyed the parents.
Grant had an eclectic professional career. He worked with our family in two businesses: Redbird Advisors and Vail (Colorado) Capital Partners (VCP). At VCP, he was part of the company’s property management division. Like many who venture to the mountains of Colorado, Grant utilized his athletic skills to becomes an accomplished downhill skier. For Redbird, Grant helped us get established in the early years of the company. Grant also loved his time in the restaurant industry. He loved cooking, which he often did at home. Like lacrosse, he became a student.
Grant leaves a family that will greatly miss him, including his son Connor, brother Drew, and parents Sheila and Todd, all of St. Louis, Missouri. He is also survived by his grandmother Janet Gurley, of Rogers, Arkansas.
Our family also thanks all those who helped and supported him throughout the years. A special thanks goes to Meghan Burke who cared for, comforted and loved him in his final days.

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Kirkwood)
Obituary Preview: Mona L. "Mo" Olson (nee Bowlby) January 12, 1932 - April 13, 2024
Mona L. "Mo" Olson, 92, journeyed home on April 13, 2024, to the arms of Jesus. Leaving her earthly life, she was covered by a St Louis Cardinals blanket, hands wrapped over a small stuffed Golden Retriever dog, pictures of her family near her bed and, of course, wearing her favorite color purple.
Mona was born in Malden, Massachusetts to her parents Arthur Spurgeon Bowlby and Aleene Margaret “Molly” Bowlby and was the sister to Art and Rich. She attended grade school in the village of Kingston Nova Scotia, Canada and graduated high school from Patrick Henry High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She met her future love, Jennings “J.O.” Olson, at her brother’s wedding and they were married on September 1, 1956.  As a newly married couple, Mo and J.O. spent their honeymoon camping and fishing in northern Minnesota, a family activity they would continue enjoying with their children.
Mona, known to her loved ones as "Mo", "Mom", "Grandma" or "Gawky" adored her family and cherished her time with them. She was a devoted mother to Elizabeth A. Lynch, Jay J. Olson and Linda M. Tackes and mother-in-law to Debbie Olson and Matt Tackes.  Mona was also a fun-loving grandmother to K.C., Ethan, Spencer, Allison and Adam and great-grandmother to Evelyn, Bristol, and Whitlee.
In her professional life, Mona began her career as a secretary for several insurance companies. She then dedicated 16 years as a secretary at Maryville University for the Registrar's office and the School of Physical Therapy. Upon retirement, she continued to impact young lives through various educational programs and volunteering opportunities with the YMCA after-school programs, Oasis volunteer reading program and Vacation Bible Camp at First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood, where she shared her passion for learning with children.
Mona found joy in the simple pleasures of allowing her grandchildren to build blanket forts, rope mazes and host tea parties during the grandkid's visits.  She often ate her hot fudge ice cream sundae before her dinner and kept a small bag of dark chocolate in her purse to share.  Mona’s favorite activities included gardening, feeding the birds, attending monthly Red Hats events and adventures to the casino or bingo hall with friends and her husband, Jennings. Lastly, she was the unknown #1 fan of the St Louis Cardinals baseball team.  She cheered on many players, shouting "that a way baby-cakes" as Mark McGuire, Yadier Molina, Albert Pujols and Adam "Waino" Wainwright made history in their careers.

Joseph Grant Peters - October 31, 1942 - April 09, 2024

Departed: 04/09/2024 (Kirkwood)
Obituary Preview: Joseph G. Peters, 81, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 9th, 2024 with his wife of 51 years, Margaret “Peggy” by his side. Loving father and father-in-law of Anne (Doug) Remington, Amanda (Scott) Luke, Jennifer (Joe) Scott III, Katherine (Joshua) Miller and Meghan (Hakan) Gurgenli. Proud grandfather to Sophia, Evan and Hadley Luke, Delaney and Theo Remington, Jackson, Wyatt and Hunter Miller and Ryan and Reese Gurgenli. Beloved brother to his twin sisters, Tina (David) Price and Toni (Dennis) McClard, and fondly remembered by nieces, nephews, cousins, countless friends, former employees and motorcycle riding buddies.
Joe was born in St. Louis Missouri, on October 31, 1942 to Joseph and Mary Jane (Longnecker) Peters. As a youngster growing up in St Louis and Glencoe, Missouri, he used his quick wit and engaging personality to find employment at age fourteen hauling trash on a trash truck, bussing tables in a local restaurant, selling garden supplies and caddying at a local golf course; all with the goal of earning enough money to buy his first car when he finally turned sixteen. Acquiring, driving, racing and messing with automobiles remained a consistent passion for Joe for the rest of his life. To support his passion, he majored in Business Administration at Drury University with the idea of taking over the marketing research business that his mother had started on her back porch and helping it grow. Before he could indulge his passion, however; this was the sixties and the Vietnam War was calling, he felt a duty to serve in the armed forces and signed up for a tour in Vietnam in the U. S. Navy. He served as a Lieutenant J.g. where he earned a Navy Commendation Medal.
After his service, he and the dedicated employees of his mother’s original marketing research company took that business off of his mother’s porch and successfully turned it into a research company in demand around the country for over 60 years - Peters Marketing Research. Over the years, he employed hundreds of bright and dedicated men and women, including family, who learned a great deal from Joe about business acumen. He led by example and truly enjoyed his work. His favorite response to client accolades and team successes was always, “What a great place to work!”  And it sure was.
Joe was eventually able to turn his love for automobiles into racing Sports 2000 race cars in the Sports Car Club of America, winning races throughout the Midwest during the 1980s and 90s. Later in the 90s he slowed down a bit and switched to two wheels and enjoyed a somewhat slower ride on one of many Harleys with Peggy in the seat behind him.
Joe was a fan of Jazz music, Blues Hockey, Formula 1, Premier League and family time spent with his daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren who brought him great joy and laughter. He especially enjoyed sharing in their accomplishments whether it be on a musical or dance stage, water (rowing), running track, baseball field, soccer pitch, basketball or tennis court, or ski slope.  Joe is incredibly loved and will be greatly missed.

Steven Alan Kniffen - February 09, 1953 - April 07, 2024

Departed: 04/07/2024 (Kirkwood)
Obituary Preview: Steven Alan Kniffen, age 71 died Sunday, April 7, 2024
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Jason Kniffen, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Sherrie Kniffen (nee Lancaster); children, Adam (Arielle) and Audrey Kniffen, stepchildren, Alecia and Dustin (Ashley) Strayhorn; grandchildren, Carolyn and Laurelin Kniffen, Cameron Durham, and Sloane Strayhorn; brothers, Jason (Cindy) Kniffen, Jr., Bob (Dierdre), Rick (Tammy), Jim (Cathy), and Tony (Amy) Kniffen; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Steven was an avid outdoorsman and spent every moment he could outdoors. The natural world Steve referred to as his cathedral was where he felt closest to his savior. He enjoyed hiking, kayaking, fishing, hunting, camping, and cutting then splitting firewood. His fondest memories are those spent outdoors hunting with his buddies or camping with his kids. So it is with this in mind, we will celebrate and honor his life in his cathedral. There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, May 18th, at 12:00 noon at the banquet hall of the Drury Inn, 3800 MO-141, Arnold, MO 63010, followed by the spreading of his ashes, where he loved to hunt. I invite all who knew and loved Steve to join us in this celebration. In lieu of the traditional flowers at a time like this, I would like those who can bring a sapling of their choosing to plant in his honor. Steve had a strong love of trees in particular and the sight where we will lay him to rest has been heavily logged. Steve mourned for the loss of trees that he referred to as his friends. Let these new plantings serve as a reminder of the man who felt as one with the trees and nature. I invite all of you to bring photos and your memories of Steve to this celebration. Anyone who wishes to offer a eulogy on his behalf is welcome to do so. Watch this site in the days to come for the date of this ceremony. We are waiting until brother Ricky has recovered and is out of the hospital so that he can be there with us. My thanks to all of you for your continued prayers, good thoughts, and help along this journey I hoped I would never have to make. May God be with each and every one of you, and you know the precious love that Steve shared with me. Contributions in Steve’s memory are preferred to the World Wildlife Fund, 1250 24th Street NW, Washington, DC 20037, (https://www.worldwildlife.org). Arrangements by Bopp Chapel
