Rose Mary Carpenter - April 13, 1976 - May 13, 2021

Departed: 05/13/2021 (West Jefferson)
Obituary Preview: Rosemary Edwards Carpenter, age 45 of Creston passed away on May 13, 2021.
Memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 3pm at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Shepherd, Rev. Anthony Roark and Rev. Martha Kincaid officiating.
In the spiritual realm, roses symbolize passion and sacrifice. Roses also represent elegance, grace, and a rejuvenation of the soul. It’s no coincidence that many miracles are preceded by a rose – a singular beacon of hope. To many people, roses are proof of God’s work in the world. We cannot think of a better person to embody these ideals than our beloved Rose Mary. She was our ‘Rose.’ She was our beacon. She was the prettiest flower in the field. Like with any rose, as she bloomed she revealed her many layers. Each one personified her youthful exuberance, enduring compassion for others and endearing altruistic nature. They say that roses also vibrate at a higher electrical frequency than any other flower in the world. Rose Mary certainly worked at a different wavelength. She was truly magnetic. Rose Mary’s boundless energy for helpful others was contagious. Everyday, she strove to become a better mother, sister, friend, and caretaker.
To her nieces and nephews, Rose Mary never seceded her vigor and zest for life. As the baby of the family, Rose Mary was the de facto leader of the grandchildren. She doted after each niece and nephew as if they were one of her own. She rarely missed a birthday and ultimately became their closest confidant as they emerged into adulthood. While their parents worked, Rose would frequently treat them to surprise outings and trips to the Boone Mall, where the younger nieces and nephews recited nonsensical quotes from television shows in a feeble attempt to embarrass her while dotting in and out of close racks. They of course never succeeded. Even on her less than stellar days, it was difficult to tilt Rose from her pedestal, and believe us, her nieces and nephews tried. She loved them as much as they admired her.
Rose Mary was a 1994 graduate of Beaver Creek High School. Despite residing in enemy territory, she remained true to her Beaver roots. She would later study business management at Wilkes Community College and later take on leadership positions at several local businesses. She was perhaps best known as a favorite waitress at Winner’s Circle Restaurant, where she was on a first-name basis with nearly every customer. Many customers didn’t have a chance to give their order before Rose would recite their favorite menu item. She would also have your favorite drink waiting in a to-go cup before their departure. She was intuitive in her every position of life.
When she wasn’t tending to her numerous responsibilities as a wife and mother, Rose Mary enjoyed cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, preparing homecooked meals and withstanding the endless barrage of loving teasing she endured from the family that adored her.
She is survived by her husband, Roger Carpenter of the home, two sons; Kody and Riley Carpenter of Creston, daughter; Samantha Carpenter of Mountain City, two grandchildren. Rose Mary is also survived by her two sisters; Rita and husband Junior Eller, of Crumpler; Robin Edwards, of Laurel Springs; one brother, Roger and wife Sherry Edwards of Lewisville; three nephews; Matt and wife Paula Eller, of North Wilkesboro; Jesse Campbell, of Boone; nephew Jason Edwards; niece Mandy and husband Jason Shumate, of Deep Gap; niece Ashli Campbell, of Banner Elk; great nephews Sawyer Moore, Charleston and Oliver Eller. Rose Mary was preceded in death by her parents Van Buren and Ola Bell Edwards, of West Jefferson. And of course, her beloved dog, Digger.
Memorials may be made to the family, C/O Boone Family Funeral Home, PO Box 786, West Jefferson, NC 28694 or the NC Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 8311 Brier Creek Pkwy, Suite 105-430, Raleigh, NC 27617.

Steve was born in England on December 16, 1946 to the late Reginald and Doris Haggis Cotsford. He also lived in Switzerland before moving with his family to the US. From an early age, Steve was drawn to mechanics, which lead him down a path towards engineering. He worked for most of his career as a mechanical engineer for Harsco Rail where he developed special vehicles for the maintenance of railways, which are used worldwide.
Steve was also drawn towards travel and discovering new places and languages. Especially gifted with languages, he was fluent in English, French, German and Italian. These skills were an asset during his travels around the world for business and pleasure.

Steve was always fond of his Scottish ancestry. During his midlife, he devoted himself to learning to play the bagpipes to reconnect with his distant roots. His time with the Palmetto Pipes and Drums in Columbia, SC were full of friendships and joy for him. He was always eager to share his knowledge of piping with others.
After living many years in South Carolina, he moved to West Jefferson with his wife Linda after retirement. He always loved the mountains and enjoyed the lifestyle and weather in the North Carolina mountains where he finished his life.
