Departed: 04/15/2024 (Pinehurst)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Newton “Bud” Jackson, age 83, died on April 15, 2024 of congestive heart failure and multi-lobal pneumonia. As Bud transcended this earth he was holding hands with the love of his life, Mary. Much could be written about Bud’s intellect, his illustrious career in the field of Forensic and Clinical Psychology. But better it be to know Bud has a most winning smile, disarming personality and gentle spirit. Bud loved his wife, kids and grandkids and enjoyed chess, tennis, golf and was an avid reader. He also treasured the time he and Mary played pinochle with their more relaxed rules of play. Bud is preceded in death by his parents and older sister. Those he left behind, his wife Mary, children David and Debra, stepson (though never treated like one) Aaron (wife Emilie); three grandkids, a nephew, niece and one cousin. In true Bud style he has written his own epitaph. He helped women get through school. He wanted to aid the desperate. Sometimes he succeeded, more often he failed. He tried to keep hope alive. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. Two memorial services will be held in the near future, one in Pinehurst and one in Ann Arbor, MI. Cards of sympathy can be sent to Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines.

He was born in Midland City, AL, on August 7, 1925. He met and married Mildred (Millie) Elizabeth Davis on April 16, 1947 at the Little Chapel of the Roses in Chula Vista, CA. He and Millie traveled the world and raised a family before settling in Pinehurst in 1985. He is survived by his son, Ed; son-in-law, Mike Greene; two granddaughters, Christine Greene Roe and Julie Roberson McNicol, and their spouses; two grandsons, Michael Greene and Cason Roberson, and their spouses; and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Cason and Joseph Tullis; his brothers, Robert Byron and Virgil; his sister, Miriam; his wife of 69 years, Mildred Davis; and his daughter, Judy Roberson Greene. LCDR Harold Roberson’s military service began in 1943 when he entered the US Navy after completing his junior year in high school. After completing boot camp, he was assigned to a seaplane training squadron and became qualified as a flight engineer and gunner. Just before he turned 19, he was presented with combat flight wings and was sent to Kansas where he trained for 3 months on the B-24 Liberator aircraft. By the end of 1944, the flight crew that Harold was assigned to was sent to San Diego where they picked up a new plane. Shortly thereafter, the crew flew to the Mariannas Islands where they joined Navy Patrol Bombing Squadron 102. The crew flew a total of 28 missions including one near Tinian in which they were attacked by 8 enemy aircraft. Harold and the crew received two bronze stars and the distinguished flying cross for shooting down three of the enemy aircraft. When the war ended in 1945, he was discharged and went home to Alabama where he finished high school in 1946. He planned to attend Auburn University, however, he decided he “wasn’t ready for college” and he re-enlisted in the US Navy in July 1946. He rose through the enlisted ranks to the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1956 and was selected to attend Officers Candidate School commissioning in 1957. During the remaining 20 years of his Navy career, he had many challenging and exciting assignments, including serving at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base during the Cuban missile crisis; serving as the Commanding Officer of two ships (the USS Papago-ATF 160 and the USS Recovery, ARS 43); and serving as the Operations Officer for United States Fleet Activities in Yokosuka, Japan. In 1974, after 31 years of service, Harold retired at the rank of Lieutenant Commander with the significant career designation as a ‘Mustang” which is the Navy term for a sailor that served both in enlisted and officer positions. After the Navy, Robbie began a career in real estate in Virginia Beach, VA. In 1985, after 10 years in Virginia, he and Millie moved to a new home in Pinehurst, NC. He continued his career as a real estate agent well into his 80s. He and Millie had wonderful lives filled with golfing and entertaining friends with a major of focus on activities at the Pinehurst Country Club, including the working as a volunteer at the last 3 US Opens in Pinehurst. Robbie participated in community service in several civic and professional groups in Pinehurst: including serving as an usher at the Village Chapel; participating in the Lions Club, the Tin Whistles, the Military Order of the World Wars, reunions of the Navy Squadrons 102/14 Association, the Retired Officers Association, the Military Officers Association of America, the Sandhills Men’s Fellowship Breakfasts, the Village Chapel Men’s Bible Study Group, among others. Once arrangements have been made for a memorial service, they will be shared with family and friends.

Sharon was born in Somerset County, Pa, the first child and only daughter of Ivan and Loraine Peck of Confluence. After high school and a tour of Europe Sharon moved to Washington, D.C. where she later graduated cum laude from Trinity College, now Trinity Washington University. Her career interests were founded in natural resource policy and she worked in the United States Congress where she became one of the first woman staff directors of a Congressional Committee. One of her key achievements was working with her colleague and friend Dr. Paul Maxwell of the House Science Committee to co-author, secure House and Senate passage and ultimately the signature of President Ronald Reagan to pass into law the National Critical Materials Act of 1984 which provided for a National Critical Materials Council in the Executive Office of the President. After leaving government service, Sharon served as a top level policy advisor to leaders of the domestic petroleum industry before co-founding with her husband an information and government relations firm that published several policy newsletters and which served as external Washington Counsel to a number of Fortune 500 corporations, academic institutions and other non-profit organizations.Sharon was an avid golfer and a victor of numerous Washington DC area tournaments playing for Lowes Island Golf Club where she was a member. Annette Martin - September 14, 1939 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Pinehurst)
Obituary Preview: Annette Martin, Ph.D., bid farewell on March 19, 2024, the first day of her 84th Spring, with Carole Huston, her partner of 47 years, by her side. Annette was nationally recognized for artistic and academic excellence during her four-decade career in Interpretation & Performance Studies at Eastern Michigan University. The curriculum she developed drew undergraduate and graduate students from across the country. Her critically acclaimed body of creative, challenging, and frequently controversial original and stage adaptations of non-dramatic literature won numerous awards. To paraphrase Robert Frost, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that made all the difference.” Annette loved the journey, “asking the questions and looking for answers.” But it was her love for - and from - her countless students, who were willing to trust her and risk stepping out into unknown territory, that she considered her life’s greatest gift. Annette earned a B.A. from Eastern Michigan, master’s degree in Theatre from the U. of Wisconsin, and doctorate from the U. of Michigan. She adapted and directed productions based on novels by Faulker, Bronte, feminist author Kate Millette, and Pulitzer Prizing-winning poet W. D. Snodgrass, who called her production of his “The Führer Bunker” “brilliant.”She directed existing plays as well as writing and staging unique and original productions, several with feminist themes, which won multiple “Best of” Awards for drama, direction and acting. While her work sometimes “pushed the envelope,” she was considered “brilliantly insightful,” “incredibly bold,” “a directorial genius.”In addition to the EMU Celebration of Faculty Excellence-Artistic Recognition Award, Annette received the National Communication Association’s prestigious Irene Coger Award for Distinguished Performance based on her contributions as an artist, director, scriptwriter and teacher; and EMU’s Distinguished Faculty Award for scholarly and creative activity, which she considered the two most meaningful awards of her career. Upon her retirement in 2002, EMU Board of Regents granted her emeritus status (1963-2002), citing her “relentless and uncompromising artistic and academic standards instilled in those, her students, and a desire to challenge, question, and create.”In 2005, Annette and Carole moved to Pinehurst where she finally had time to pursue her love of oil painting. Their home is filled with her paintings of Tuscany and Ogunquit, Maine, where the couple spent many summers. In retirement, Annette could be found sitting on her porch, wearing her ever-present reading glasses, a book on her lap, a vase of flowers cut from their garden by her side, and her beloved pup, Tibi, at her feet. In the words of the philosopher, Winnie the Pooh, “If there ever comes a time when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.” Annette’s memory will be forever held in the heart of her partner, Carole Huston (m. 2014); her brother Richard Martin (Maryland) and her nieces, Dani and Christine, and their families; and special cousin Carollee Cousins and her family.
