Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also give family and friends an opportunity to pay tribute to their loved one and share memories.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template to guide the process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about their accomplishments, interests, and personality traits.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph. Some online platforms may allow for longer tributes or stories.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful to those who read it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. You may need to contact the newspaper's obituary department directly or use an online submission form. Be sure to follow their guidelines and deadlines carefully.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and any additional features such as photos or special layouts. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is becoming more common for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made to an obituary once it has been published. However, some online platforms may allow corrections or updates within a certain timeframe.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private or restricted listing on online platforms. Alternatively, you can choose not to publish an obituary at all.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's memory and support a worthy cause.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites. Local libraries or historical societies may also have archives of old newspapers that you can access.

Can I write multiple obituaries for different publications?

Yes, you can write multiple obituaries tailored to different audiences or publications. This may be especially relevant if the deceased person had connections to multiple communities or organizations.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member who knew the deceased person well. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance with writing an obituary.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or online platform immediately. They will work with you to correct the mistakes as quickly as possible.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Yes, including quotes or poems that were meaningful to the deceased person can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just be sure to keep them concise and relevant.

What if I want to create a memorial website instead of publishing an obituary?

A memorial website can be a beautiful way to honor a loved one's memory and share stories, photos, and memories with others. Many online platforms offer tools and templates to help you create a memorial website.

Can I republish an old obituary on social media or online platforms?

Yes, you can share an old obituary on social media or online platforms as a way to remember and celebrate the deceased person's life on anniversaries or special occasions.

How do I handle condolences and messages from readers?

You can respond personally to condolences and messages from readers, or you may choose to have them forwarded to you through a funeral home or online platform. Be sure to express gratitude for their kind words and support.

What if I want to create a video tribute instead of writing an obituary?

A video tribute can be a powerful way to celebrate a loved one's life through images, music, and storytelling. Many funeral homes and online platforms offer resources and tools to help you create a video tribute.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Yes, including humorous anecdotes or personality traits can make an obituary more engaging and reflective of the deceased person's spirit. Just be sure to balance humor with respect and dignity.
