Gary Lavern Handeland - December 01, 1944 - April 13, 2024

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Radcliffe)
Obituary Preview: Gary Handeland, age 79, of Story City, IA, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, IA.
Gary Lavern Handeland, son of Gilbert and Ora (Risetter) Handeland was born on December 1, 1944 at home in rural Radcliffe, Iowa. Gary passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa on April 13, 2024.
Salem Lutheran Church was the cornerstone of Gary’s faith. Gary was baptized, confirmed, and then united in marriage on February 15th, 1969, to Diane Cole. With God being the foundation, Gary and Diane raised Cara, Wade, and Kay on the family farm. His lifelong passion of farming started at age 11 with his mom and brother Loren, after the passing of their dad. He continued to farm with his son until his last days. Along with growing crops, he took great joy in raising quarter horses for over 35 years.
Gary attended Radcliffe Community Schools where he played all sports, with his true passion being baseball, which he bonded over with his grandson Cole. Gary was most proud of his family, and he enjoyed nothing more than being together. Between sporting events and show rings, he didn’t miss an event. There was nothing better to him than going to a show to watch his grandson Carson, ride the horses that Gary had raised. His kind and caring heart, along with his love for candy is something his grandkids will always cherish.
Gary and Diane had a love like no other. Their adventures together included many wild rides starting with running into a gravel pile just north of the farm driveway with Gary’s brand new 67 Chevy. There was an ice storm the night before their wedding, they had hidden their car so it wouldn’t be decorated. They had planned a getaway car to drive them from the church and that ended in the ditch! Raising Cara, Wade, (and Kay), The 80’s farm crisis, a tornado hitting the farm, floods, droughts, the gray hair that came from their rambunctious grandkids, a ten-year Parkinson’s diagnosis, Diane never left his side. Truly, a love like none other.
Gary is survived by his loving wife Diane of 55 years, daughter Cara (Rand) Swenson, son Wade Handeland, daughter Kay (Steve) Stenstrom, 6 grandchildren, Kendra, Cole, Carly, Krista Swenson, Carson and Ava Handeland. Gary is also survived by a brother, Loren (Kathy) Handeland, brothers-in-law, Larry (Roni) Cole, and David Cole, along with numerous nieces and nephews, who he loved dearly. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Ora Handeland, sisters, Aloise (Howard) Wilkinson, and Evelyn (Jerry) Davis.
From being a young teenager drag-racing cars to daily drives in his Gator, Gary didn’t miss much around Radcliffe which he claimed, “was the greatest place on earth.” Gary always welcomed everyone with a firm handshake and warm smile. Even though Parkinson’s tried to take a lot from Gary, his strength, love and humor never faded.

Thomas Robert Stolee - May 30, 1952 - March 22, 2024

Departed: 03/22/2024 (Radcliffe)
Obituary Preview: Thomas Robert Stolee, age 71, of Radcliffe, Iowa, after a series of illnesses, passed away peacefully at his home on March 22, 2024.
Tom was born on May 30, 1952, in Eldora, Iowa, to Sherman and Burdene (Knutson) Stolee. He was the youngest of three boys. Until the age of 10, Tom lived with his family on a farm East of Radcliffe, where the turkey farm is now located. His family then moved to the E Avenue Cardinal Creek farm. Tom would eventually raise his family on this same farm. In 2010 he moved into Radcliffe and his son Heath and wife moved to the farm, becoming the third generation to raise a Stolee family there.
In 1972 Tom was introduced to a young lady from Algona, Iowa, via a blind date. He married Debra Bulten in Algona, Iowa, in 1973. Tom and Deb were blessed with two sons, Lance and Heath, and three grandchildren, Landon, Carter and Sawyer. All were the greatest joys of his life. He always gave thanks for the fact that they all lived less than 2 miles away from Grandpa and Grandma.
During Tom’s childhood years he showed calves and horses in 4-H and Saddle Club. He was proud to have shown the Grand Champion Halter Horse, named “Sugar,” at the Hardin County Fair. He won many ribbons running barrels and poles with his horses.
Tom played football and did the shot put and hurdles in track in high school, graduating from Radcliffe High School in 1970. He was named to the First Team All-Conference Team in football in 1969.
After graduation Tom worked for several years at Beran Lumber in Garden City. He then farmed and owned his own construction business working for many years with “Stan” Stanerson. Raising pigs, sheep and cattle thru the years was always a source of enjoyment for Tom. The miracle of birth never got old and working in the barn was our family’s church, always remembering to count our blessings and give thanks to the higher power that gave those blessings to us. Tom finished his working years at the IAS Lumberyard in Hubbard, working there for over 15 years.
Hunting was a lifetime hobby for Tom. Boy did he have some coon hunting stories!! Hunting buddies and their families from several states came year after year to pheasant hunt here and became more than friends - they were ‘adopted’ Stolee family members. Memories of years of hunting visits will forever be with all of his family. Conservation and taking care of the land was always important to Tom. He was a charter board member of the Hardin County Pheasants Forever. He and his family were awarded Conservationist of the Year in 2022.
After 5 years of kidney dialysis, Tom was given a kidney transplant, thanks to the unselfishness of the family of a deceased loved one. Tom has requested that everyone become organ donors. His life was given back to him when he was able to stop dialysis and continue on normally after his transplant. And we cannot remember Tom without thinking about those blue, Key brand, bib overalls that he was rarely seen without. Even though Deb hated those bibs, a pair of pliers, screwdriver, pocketknife or ink pen, was always close at hand. (“And don’t forget to give the pen back!!!”)
Tom’s lasting legacy is the building of a conservation wetland on the “Home Place” with his family. Everyone pitched in to plant hundreds of trees and many acres of wildflowers and wildlife habitats. Tom’s retirement job was mowing and watering all those trees and shrubs and he loved every minute of this time connecting with nature. This “Stolee Wetland” leaves a hunting and fishing paradise for the family to enjoy for generations while also helping conserve land and water. Tom will be watching with a smile as that big fish is reeled in or the dogs point at that long-tailed rooster.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of over 50 years, Deb; sons Lance and Heath (Tiffany); grandchildren Landon, Carter and Sawyer; brother Marcus (Pam); sister-in-law Beth Stolee; all from Radcliffe, sister-in-law Sherry (Jim) Erickson, several nieces and nephews, and many, many “chosen” children and grandkids that called him “Grandpa Tom” (a phrase that always brought a huge smile to his face). His beloved side-kick Phoebe, a golden-doodle, will surely miss her daily trips to the farm. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Orlen; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law.
Tom strived to teach his boys and grandkids to love, cherish, and honor all the beauty of the land that God blessed us with. Job well done Grandpa Tom, well done indeed.

Joel Isaac Hodnefield - July 02, 1965 - August 25, 2023

Departed: 08/25/2023 (Radcliffe)
Obituary Preview: Joel Hodnefield age 58 of Boone died on August 25, 2023 at his home.
Joel Isaac Hodnefield was born July 2, 1965 in Story City, Iowa. He graduated from Radcliffe High School. He was the second of three children born to Sharon and Jerome Hodnefield. During his youth he farmed his parents’ land and helped other farmers in the area to support his family.
After he graduated from Radcliffe, he was given an academic scholarship. He declined. Instead, he remained at the farm for many years to care for his family and their land. He left the farm on his 38th year. Joel loved to travel. Of the many states he traveled--Atlantic to Pacific--his favorite state was Montana. During his travels Joel learned how to swim and fish. His "Bro" David John would exclaim "He's a natural!" And Joel loved it!
Joel loved his daughters Emma and Kaylee Hodnefield. And had a strong bond with David Michael. They will forever remain in his light.
Joel met Rie.
There is a kindness that, if you do not know love, will only confuse you. Love is what Joel slowly, carefully and decidedly taught Rie. "There is no right or wrong. Let me pour out my heart to you and--someday--you may understand how deeply I love you. Then we will know how to be."
Joel was preceded in death by his brother Jason Hodnefield, sister Joleen Hodnefield, mother Sharon Hodnefield, father Jerome Hodnefield, mother-in-law Betty Rose McGovern and brother-in-law Phil Immesote.
Joel is survived by survived by his wife Rie McGovern, daughters Kaylee and Emma Hodnefield, David Imberti, father-in-law Mick McGovern, brothers-in-law David McGovern, Kenn and Sally McGovern, Mark and Anna McGovern, sister-in-law Kathie and Don Frieson and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews all of whom loved him dearly. In Fields of Kindness: In Loving Memory of Joel By Anna McGovern In fields of green and skies so wide,
Joel's gentle heart did bide. A farmer's hands, a loving soul,
In kindness, he played his role. With every seed he sowed with care,
He nurtured life beyond compare. Not just the crops that thrived and grew,
But also hearts he touched and knew. The earth may claim his weary frame,
But love and memories of Joel remain the same. His legacy of goodness sown,
In every heart, a home has grown. Though he has left this mortal plane,
His spirit's touch will still remain. In whispered winds and rustling leaves,
In every heart that still believes. Marie, his partner through all life's years,
Shared in his joys, wiped away his tears. Remember the love that forever binds,
In the memories you both designed. So let us gather, hearts held tight,
Remembering Joel in the soft sunlight. A farmer, a friend, forever kind,
His presence in our souls entwined.

It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral or memorial services, and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or crematorium. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include hobbies, interests, achievements, and other personal details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life story. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, online obituary websites, funeral home websites, and social media platforms.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and the length of the obituary. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge a fee based on the word count or column inches.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos, videos, or audio clips to accompany the obituary.

How do I submit an obituary for publication?

You can usually submit an obituary through the publication's website or by contacting their customer service department directly. Funeral homes often have staff who can assist with writing and submitting obituaries as well.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the platform or newspaper. Online obituaries may be published immediately or within a few hours, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks to publish.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes. However, it's best to check with the publication or funeral home beforehand to understand their policies regarding corrections or updates.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

Some online platforms offer private or password-protected options for publishing obituaries. You can also choose to share the obituary only with specific individuals or groups.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes. Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a cause they cared about.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or obituary websites using keywords like the person's name, date of birth and death, and location. You can also contact local libraries or genealogical societies for assistance.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you have permission from the original author or publisher, you can republish an old obituary. Be sure to verify the accuracy of the information and consider updating it if necessary.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be a difficult task during a time of grief. Consider seeking help from a funeral home staff member, a friend or family member, or a professional writer who specializes in obituaries.

Can I include humor or personality in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous anecdotes or personal touches can help celebrate their life and make the tribute more engaging.

How do I handle conflicting opinions about what to include in an obituary?

If there are disagreements among family members or friends about what to include in an obituary, try to reach a consensus by discussing everyone's concerns and priorities. You can also consider creating multiple versions of the obituary for different audiences.

What if I need to correct errors in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or funeral home immediately to report any errors. They will work with you to correct the mistakes and republish the revised obituary.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Yes! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can also create a memorial page or group to collect condolences and memories.

How do I preserve an online obituary over time?

Saving a copy of the obituary as a PDF or printing it out can help ensure its preservation. You can also consider creating a digital archive or scrapbook with copies of online tributes and condolences.

What if I want to create a more extensive tribute beyond an obituary?

You can consider creating a memorial website, blog, or video tribute that shares more stories, photos, and memories of the deceased. These types of tributes can become lasting legacies for loved ones.

Can I reuse content from an old obituary for a new one?

If you're writing an obituary for someone related to the original deceased person (e.g., spouse, sibling), you may be able to reuse some biographical information. However, be sure to update and personalize the content for the new individual.
