He attended Fairview Free Will Baptist Church in Spartanburg and was the Chief Investigator for the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office.  Randy was a very kind and giving soul. It seemed nothing could bring him more joy than helping someone… especially if it was someone close to him. Those same people were also often on the receiving end of jokes, pranks and lots of “picking”/poking fun.  Randy loved to laugh and have a good time and make sure everyone around him did too.  Anyone who knew him loved him.  I’m sure he has left many wonderful memories for each of us.  He was THE BEST big brother and in his son’s words: “He loved to help people and would never ask or expect anything in return. He touched so many people and I will always consider him my hero. We love you so much daddy and until we meet again I will try and make you proud and be the God loving man you showed me how to be!!”
He was very strong in his faith and always did his best to be the strongest representative of God’s word because he believed actions spoke much louder than words. We all loved Randy and will miss him deeply. We may not understand, but we know God doesn’t make mistakes. He brought Randy home to make him whole again and give him his heavenly reward. It’s now our duty and honor to model his kindness and his caring attitude to everyone we meet from now on.
Randy began his law enforcement career at Spartanburg City in 1982 where he worked as a reserve officer. He was hired to work for the Spartanburg Sheriff’s Office in February 1984 where he worked Narcotics and Vice as well as Uniform Patrol where he was a field training officer. He then moved to Forensic assignments where he was working all Homicide cases until 2005.  He remained in Forensics until hired at the Spartanburg Coroner’s Office in 2007. Randy was promoted to Chief Investigator in 2010 where he remained until death on Saturday Feb. 19, 2022.
Randy attended many specialized schools in narcotics, vice and death investigative specialties. He was one of a few officers qualified as a crime scene expert in Circuit Court. He testified in numerous cases where convictions were rendered.
Randy received many awards in his career. He received the Solicitors Award for Law Enforcement Excellence in 2005, Coroner’s Office Investigator of the year in 2010 and again in 2015. He was awarded a certification by the American Board of Medico-legal Death Investigators in 2010. In 2014, he was awarded Deputy Coroner of the year by the S.C. Coroners Association.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for loved ones, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also help to notify others of the passing and provide details about funeral services or memorial events.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, family members or close friends of the deceased write the obituary. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include a photo, quotes, or other personal touches.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be published online or in specialized publications.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and is often longer and more personalized.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, you can write your own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately. Many people choose to write their own obituaries as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life accomplishments.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some may accept submissions online, while others require email or phone submissions. Be prepared to provide necessary documentation, such as a death certificate.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers may charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer free or paid options. Funeral homes may also offer obituary writing and publishing services as part of their packages.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. However, if there's an error or inaccuracy, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional print obituary. It's published on websites, social media platforms, or online memorials, allowing friends and family to share condolences, memories, and photos with ease.

How long do online obituaries stay online?

The duration of an online obituary varies depending on the platform. Some websites may keep them online permanently, while others may remove them after a certain period. Be sure to check with the platform for their policies.

Can I add photos or videos to an online obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to upload photos, videos, or other multimedia elements to enhance the obituary and celebrate the person's life.

A memorial website is a dedicated online space where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences for the deceased. These sites often remain active for years, serving as a lasting tribute to the person's life.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can search online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites like Ancestry.com or FamilySearch.org. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers and records.

Can I reuse an old obituary for a current funeral service?

If you're using an old obituary as a template, be sure to update the information accordingly. However, if you're reprinting an exact copy of an old obituary without permission from the original author or publisher, it may violate copyright laws.

What is the etiquette for responding to an online condolence message?

Acknowledge each message with a simple thank you or heartfelt response. You can respond publicly or privately, depending on your preference. Be sure to respect the sender's intentions and emotions.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families opt to include this information in the obituary as a way to honor their loved one's memory and support a meaningful cause.

How do I handle inaccuracies or disagreements within the family regarding the obituary content?

Tactfully address any discrepancies with family members before submitting the obituary. Consider involving multiple family members in the writing process to ensure accuracy and consensus.

What is the significance of publishing an obituary in multiple languages?

Publishing an obituary in multiple languages helps reach extended family members and friends who may not speak the dominant language of the region. This ensures that everyone has access to important information about the funeral service or memorial event.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor and personal stories can make an obituary more engaging and celebratory of the person's life. Just be mindful of tone and audience sensitivity.

How do I preserve an original newspaper clipping of an obituary?

To preserve an original newspaper clipping, consider laminating it or storing it in acid-free paper or archival-quality materials. You can also digitize it by scanning or photographing it for safekeeping.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Yes! Share links to online obituaries or create posts announcing the passing on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. This helps spread the news quickly and allows friends and family to share condolences easily.

What is the role of technology in modern-day obituaries?

Technology has revolutionized the way we share information about our loved ones who have passed away. Online platforms enable easy sharing, commenting, and preservation of memories. Digital tools also facilitate collaboration among family members during the writing process.

Can I create a digital archive of family member's lives through their obituaries?

Absolutely! Collecting and digitizing family members' obituaries creates a valuable resource for future generations. Consider creating a private family website or digital archive for easy access and preservation.
