He attended Fairview Free Will Baptist Church in Spartanburg and was the Chief Investigator for the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office.  Randy was a very kind and giving soul. It seemed nothing could bring him more joy than helping someone… especially if it was someone close to him. Those same people were also often on the receiving end of jokes, pranks and lots of “picking”/poking fun.  Randy loved to laugh and have a good time and make sure everyone around him did too.  Anyone who knew him loved him.  I’m sure he has left many wonderful memories for each of us.  He was THE BEST big brother and in his son’s words: “He loved to help people and would never ask or expect anything in return. He touched so many people and I will always consider him my hero. We love you so much daddy and until we meet again I will try and make you proud and be the God loving man you showed me how to be!!”
He was very strong in his faith and always did his best to be the strongest representative of God’s word because he believed actions spoke much louder than words. We all loved Randy and will miss him deeply. We may not understand, but we know God doesn’t make mistakes. He brought Randy home to make him whole again and give him his heavenly reward. It’s now our duty and honor to model his kindness and his caring attitude to everyone we meet from now on.
Randy began his law enforcement career at Spartanburg City in 1982 where he worked as a reserve officer. He was hired to work for the Spartanburg Sheriff’s Office in February 1984 where he worked Narcotics and Vice as well as Uniform Patrol where he was a field training officer. He then moved to Forensic assignments where he was working all Homicide cases until 2005.  He remained in Forensics until hired at the Spartanburg Coroner’s Office in 2007. Randy was promoted to Chief Investigator in 2010 where he remained until death on Saturday Feb. 19, 2022.
Randy attended many specialized schools in narcotics, vice and death investigative specialties. He was one of a few officers qualified as a crime scene expert in Circuit Court. He testified in numerous cases where convictions were rendered.
Randy received many awards in his career. He received the Solicitors Award for Law Enforcement Excellence in 2005, Coroner’s Office Investigator of the year in 2010 and again in 2015. He was awarded a certification by the American Board of Medico-legal Death Investigators in 2010. In 2014, he was awarded Deputy Coroner of the year by the S.C. Coroners Association.
