Susie Lee Metcalf - April 16, 1938 - February 13, 2024

Departed: 02/13/2024 (Mars Hill)
Obituary Preview: Susie Griggs Metcalf was born April 16, 1938 and passed peacefully on February 13, 2024.
In her years on this earth, she accomplished so much. With only a 9th grade education, she went on to write stories, songs, and had the most beautiful penmanship. She handmade cards and handkerchiefs for countless people and if she knew you were sick a hot pot of homemade potato soup was sure to show up on your doorstep.
My mom and dad ministered to almost every nursing facility and shelter in the WNC area with dad on the guitar and harmonica and mom singing God’s praises.
She raised her two daughters and granddaughter with such love and joy. Constantly singing, teaching, and making life full of wonderful experiences despite the lack of financial resources. She taught us that anything was possible with God and that we should share God’s love with everyone we met.
She lived her Christian faith the most purely of anyone I have ever met. It was not a Sunday morning thing. It was a part of her inner most heart and it came out of her constantly in the way she loved and in the way she was never intimidated to ask someone she just met if they had a relationship with Christ.
Of all the beautiful things about my mom, the only thing she would want you to know is that God created each of you and loves you without reservation and that Jesus made a way for you to have a relationship directly with Him if you will only accept the sacrifice, He made for you. It was the mission of her life to spread this good news in word and song and I know she is being welcomed with open arms as her Savior says... Well done my good and faithful servant.
To honor her in lieu of flowers please read your Bible. It was her sole wish.

Michael Scott Ballard - September 15, 1970 - February 02, 2024

Departed: 02/02/2024 (Mars Hill)
Obituary Preview: Michael Scott Ballard, age 53, passed away on February 2nd at 1:15 pm in his home in Myrtle Beach, SC surrounded by his loving family.
Michael was born and raised in Asheville, NC where he participated in many different types of sports, but ultimately fell in love with wrestling. His love of this sport led to many accomplishments including winning the NC State Heavyweight Champion title in 1988 and contributing to the University of North Carolina's ACC Championship win in 1992. He carried his passion for wrestling along with all other sports throughout the rest of his life.
Michael was a long-time coach, teacher, and friend who touched the lives of so many with his kindness, love, and crazy (sometimes dark) humor. He never met a stranger and treated everyone he met with the same amount of kindness and silliness no matter how long he knew you. This love of people along with his love of history is what drove his passion for teaching. He genuinely loved every one of his students and co-workers but loved playing pranks on them the most.
In November 2017, Michael was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and just like he did with his athletics, coaching, and teaching, he never ever gave up, which allowed him to fight for over six years. Something that is truly unheard of with pancreatic cancer. He faced his disease the same way he faced everything else, with unwavering faith and an endless amount of humor. He loved life and he loved his people more than anything and his amazing soul will truly be missed.
Michael is preceded in death by his grandparents, Emory Ernest & Zola Barrett Briggs; and William Orns & Gerthie Chandler Ballard.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carey Candler Ballard; two children, Cloie D. Ballard, and Mal A. Ballard; parents, William Shelby Ballard, and Loretta Briggs Ballard; and mother-in-law Brenda P. Candler.
