John Walter Parsons - July 30, 1932 - February 23, 2024

Departed: 02/23/2024 (Warrenton)
Obituary Preview: Macon/LKG- A Fond Farewell to A Loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather
John Walter Parsons passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23rd at 7:20 AM at the age of 91 in Warrenton, North Carolina. John was born on July 30, 1932 to parents Ethel and Claude Parsons in Cortland, New York.
John (lovingly referred to as JW by his sons), graduated high school from Moravia High School and received Bachelor's Degrees at SUNY Albany, the American Institute For Foreign Trade in Arizona, and a Masters Degree at SUNY Cortland. JW loved to explore and hunt the woods behind his parents home and frequently hiked to Parson Falls behind his childhood home in Moravia, New York.
Although John's father was a farmer, which also consisted of a dairy farm, JW's calling was not to be dedicated to plowing fields, milking cows, or growing corn. John decided to enlist in the service from 1954 - 1957 where he served three years in the army before leaving the military and eventually surfacing with the merchant marines in the late 50's where he met his wife Kimie Nagamine, lovingly referred to by JW as "Ms. Kimiyah" on the island of Okinawa. Kimie and John were married on December 10th, 1959 and started their journey back to the States soon thereafter.
John's working life was primarily dedicated to serving in the New York State Corrections Department. John culminated his career retiring as a Senior Counselor in 1988 before retiring in Wallkill, New York. JW and Kimie moved to their retirement home in Holiday, Florida where they resided from 1992 to 2013. John and Kimie later moved to Mechanicsville, Maryland in 2013 before reaching their final destination living on Lake Gaston in North Carolina.
JW's passion was reading books and his favorite "Man Cave" can be found on Lake Gaston where his sons Claud and Leo converted a shed into a mini-library which contained the thousands of books JW had collected over the years. JW embellished that book collection by frequenting libraries and book exchanges with son Steven and Steven's wife Suzanne on Kimie and John's trips to North Andover, Mass where his youngest son and wife resided.
John and Kimie enjoyed playing bridge in Florida and locally at the Oxford Senior Center. JW also played APBA baseball for many years, where he conducted replays of baseball seasons past. JW also took up the computer where he competed with his sons in playing internet baseball season replays. This enabled JW to remain close with all three of his sons, while also bringing about some brisk family competition.
John was predeceased by parents Claude (1982) and mother Ethel (1985). John is survived by his wife Kimie, who John proudly called "The Fabulous One". JW often reflected upon his wife's high state of fashion, intelligence, and stubborn dedication to husband and family. John is further survived by eldest son Claud, wife Tammy and grandchildren Jacquelyn, (future husband Brandon) Tyler and his wife Shannon; middle son Leo and his wife Bonnie; and youngest son Steven and his wife Suzanne. JW's final accomplishment was the fact that all three of his sons and family lived within 45 minutes of his final residence on Pasture Gate Road on Lake Gaston.
The family will receive friends from 12-2:00 pm on Saturday, March 2nd at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton with a graveside service to follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Littleton.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to the Churchill-Five Forks Fire Department. Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects, attend funeral services, and offer condolences to the family.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes and obituary writers may also assist with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about funeral services, memorial donations, and other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful for those who read it.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they're remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do it during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including personal stories, humor, or quirks can help to make the obituary more engaging and reflective of the person's personality.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or complicated relationships involved, it's best to approach them with tact and discretion. Consider consulting with other family members or friends before deciding what to include.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about memorial donations or charitable contributions in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person's legacy.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Online obituaries are often published immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes can be made to online obituaries relatively easily. However, making changes to printed obituaries may be more difficult or expensive.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private online memorial or share it only with close friends and family through email or social media.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you want to republish an old obituary for a special occasion or anniversary, you can usually do so by contacting the original publication or using online archives.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives, visiting your local library or genealogy center, or contacting the newspaper directly to see if they have archived copies available.

Can I create an online memorial instead of an obituary?

Yes! Online memorials offer a flexible and interactive way to celebrate someone's life. They can include photos, videos, stories, and guestbooks for visitors to leave messages.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while newspapers may charge by word count or column inch.

Can I prepay for an obituary?

Some funeral homes and online platforms offer prepaid options for obituaries. This can help alleviate financial burdens on your loved ones during a difficult time.
