Mr. Darren Lyons - March 07, 1966 - February 28, 2024

Departed: 02/28/2024 (Petersburg)
Obituary Preview: Due to the inclement weather, we will have Mr. Lyon's service at 11am at the Petersburg Chapel of Bland Funeral Home 137 Harrison Street, Petersburg.  For any questions or concerns, please call us at (804) 732-7841. Darren Carlton Lyons was born on March 7, 1966, in Petersburg, Virginia in the Blandford
Community. He was the second son born to the late Joyce Dillard Lyons and Joseph L. Lyons, Sr. He attended elementary, middle, and high schools in Petersburg, ultimately graduating from
Petersburg High School (PHS) in 1984 where he received the most talented superlative. At an early age he gave his life to Christ and joined Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, in Petersburg, VA. where he sang solos in the choir, attended Sunday School, and served as worship leader. Darren later joined First Baptist Church, on Harrison Street in Petersburg, VA. There, he sang in the choir, joined the youth group, and attended Sunday School. He shared his talents
throughout the Petersburg community.
Upon graduation from Petersburg High School, he attended George Mason University (GMU). While attending George Mason University, Darren was a charter member of the Iota Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. in December of 1987 where he was the first Chapter
President. He later graduated from George Mason University in 1990 with a degree in History. Upon leaving college Darren joined the Antioch Baptist Church in Fairfax Station, Virginia
where he directed and sang in the choir. After entering and leaving the banking industry in Virginia, Darren moved to Tampa, Florida to work for Capital One Financial in May of 1997. He was later promoted to Senior Manager of Operations in February of 1999. While working at Capital One, Darren completed a Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership in 2000. In September of 2001, he met Elaine Edwards, the love of his life, and her two daughters (Arielle and Gabrielle), at a Tampa Bay Academy of Hope conference for disadvantaged youth that was sponsored by Capital One. After dating briefly, they soon realized their love for one another, got married on June 2, 2002, and became a family of
four. A little over two years later, in October of 2004, Darren and Elaine decided to move to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma so Darren could take a position as a Senior Manager of Operations at Avaya. In mid 2006, Darren was recruited by 1-800-Flowers.com to run his own call center in Alamogordo, New Mexico, which was a dream of his. At that time, his family became a two home, two time zone family as Darren lived in Alamogordo and his wife maintained their main home in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In November of 2005, Darren also became a part of the faculty of the University of Phoenix for their Axia College Associate Degree Program. He
remained a part of their faculty until May of 2014. In 2009, Darren received a promotion that gave him the ability to work remotely, which included seasonal travel to the corporate offices of 1-800-Flowers.com in Long Island, New York. He was also able to move back to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to be with his wife. His new title was Director of Global Customer Care for Flowers. In this role he went from managing 25 people at the beginning of his call center career to managing over 1000 Full Time Employees in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatamela, Cebu, Davao, and Manilla Philippines as well as in the United States of America. Because travel was such a large part of his role, he would often take his wife
on his business trips with him. In September 2011, Darren left Flowers and gave up world travel to take the role of Assistant Vice President and General Manager at The Hartford Insurance Company in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In 2014, Darren was recruited by Teleflora and left The Hartford. In mid 2016, Darren, along with two fraternity brothers and friends (James Thomas and Walter Pinson) decided to work together on a prefunded startup company called Alekto. Although these three brilliant men put in many hours of hard work, Alekto did not produce the results they desired. It was at that time that Darren began to research entering the corporate world again. However, after
an accident took place in late January, his entire career trajectory changed. On February 21, 2017, Darren walked into an emergency room with a cut on his left foot. After the examination, he was told they would need to amputate the leg below the knee in order to save his life. On February 22nd, Darren’s leg was amputated. This was only the beginning of numerous health problems that would challenge him that year including a diagnosis of End Stage Kidney Failure and Congestive Heart Failure. That year was the most difficult year of his life,
but Darren fought through everything with God’s strength and determination. By November of 2017, Darren was going to dialysis three times every week while adapting to his new life as an amputee. As he moved into 2018, he began to have issues with his right foot, which eventually led to his second amputation in May of that year. With his new health issues,
and now being a double amputee, going back into corporate America did not seem feasible. Therefore, Darren decided to become an entrepreneur. He soon became a certified John Maxwell trainer, coach, and speaker and began working with his wife to develop their company, Korrior,
Inc. While sitting in his nursing home room, Darren took a training call with his very first client.
It is there where Korrior, Inc., a Writing, Speaking, Coaching, and Training company was born. It is also here where Darren began writing his first book A Day in The Life in A Skilled Nursing Facility, a comedic look at what life was like in the nursing home facilities, which was released
in 2019. Not long after this, Darren began working on his second book, With Worn-Out Tools: Navigating
the Rituals of Midlife, which would be a memoir of his ordeal surrounding his first amputation. The book was released to great reviews in 2021. It was in 2021 that he also joined The Morning J.O.Y. Show, which is a worship show found on the Clubhouse app. He faithfully participated every Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. before joining the Voice of Hope prayer line at 6:00 a.m. On April 5, 2022, Darren became one of two worship moderators on The Morning J.O.Y. Wednesday morning service. In April of 2023 he became one of two moderators in the Meditation and Scripture Lounge on Thursday mornings. Together, Darren and the moderators of Morning J.O.Y. wrote a devotional, Morning Joy 21 Day Devotional Volume 2 Release, 21 Devotions from the Soul, which became a best-selling book (number one in multiple
categories) as soon as it was launched on September 20, 2023. In August of 2023, Darren completed his first Amputee Coalition National Conference where he traveled to Washington D.C. to testify before Congress. However, due to someone on the coalition testing positive for Covid at the hotel, he never got the opportunity to testify. He was
already looking forward to being a part of the conference in 2024. Darren was a faithful member and elder at Voice of Hope Seventh Day Adventist Church. He
looked forward to presenting the sermon whenever the opportunity arose and was always ready. He had also been a member of the church choir and worked in the treasury, finance, and disability ministries departments. He was a church board member and believed he had a vital role to play in God’s church. Darren loved God, his family, his church members, and anyone else who had the privilege of interacting with him. As of February of this year, Darren had grown Korrior, Inc. to have numerous coaching clients all over the world as well as providing training to supervisors and managers in numerous companies worldwide. He loved to include speaking in many of his training sessions. As much as he loved coaching and training, writing and speaking were his passions. He motivated and inspired many people to never give up and live their best
lives. After fighting numerous illnesses for a little over seven years, Darren passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at his home. He lived an additional two years from what is
predicted to be the mortality rate for amputees. In his words, he was truly living in the overflow. Darren is survived by his wife, Elaine Lyons of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; daughters Arielle [Chantze] Croney of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Gabrielle Edwards of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren Ethan J. Honors, SaNaii A. Moodie, Emma H. Croney, Ellis Carlton Croney (The Namesake), and Elmira L. Croney; Father, Joseph [Gladys] Lyons, Sr.; Brother, Joseph [Tracey] Lyons, Jr.; Chesterfield, VA; as well as almost twenty-five nieces and nephews as well as a host of devoted
cousins and friends.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11am, Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Dinwiddie Memorial Park, Dinwiddie. Public Visitation will be held from 10-8pm,  and a wake from 7-8pm, Friday, March 22, 2024 at the Petersburg

Mrs. September Evell Tyson - January 21, 1981 - January 26, 2024

Departed: 01/26/2024 (Petersburg)
Obituary Preview: September “Stevi” Evell Tyson passed peacefully at the age of 43 on Friday night, January 26th, 2024.
Stevi was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on January 21st, 1981. Throughout her life, she graced many cities across the U.S. with her presence, including but not limited to: Suffolk, Virginia; Chandler, Arizona; Hopewell, Virginia; and Prince George, Virginia.
Stevi worked as a stay-at-home mom and wife and was an active member in her community, volunteering at her children’s schools and recreational sports teams and supporting charities such as the ARDS Foundation and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. When she wasn’t doting on her family (and even when she was), she spent all of her free time singing, drawing, and listening to music. She also enjoyed attending concerts, meeting her favorite musical artists, and playing GTA on PlayStation with her friends every Friday night.
Her husband, John F. Tyson, Jr. and two children, Alyssa M. Tyson and John F. Tyson III, are left to honor her memory, from her strength and perseverance to her everlasting compassion and kindness. Many other loved ones will remember her much the same; to list them all would result in a novel-length wall of names.
After a valiant battle against chronic illness, Stevi is finally at rest, free to embark on an eternal life void of pain, fatigue, or sickness.
The Tyson family would like to extend their endless gratitude to the Moose Lodge in Hopewell, Virginia and Mission BBQ in Colonial Heights, Virginia for their support and altruism throughout this time.
A Celebration of her beautiful life will be held 11am, Saturday, February 3, 2024 at the Moose Lodge, 4701 Western St., Hopewell, VA. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Petersburg Chapel of Bland Funeral Homes, 137 Harrison St., 804.732.7841.  www.blandfuneralhomes.com
