Robert "Bob" L. Hilliker - May 06, 1928 - March 25, 2024

Departed: 03/25/2024 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: Delta Junction - Robert L Hilliker (Bob), 95, a man who many people saw as "Larger Than Life" has left this life as we know it. He passed into Glory March 25, 2024, just short of his 96th Birthday. Bob was born May 6, 1928, in Battle Creek, Michigan. God gave him strength, ability, love and faith. His physical strength was evident in his conventional work as a journeyman carpenter that supported his family and then the more unconventional work he chose in his dream to live a rugged life in remote Alaska. His abilities gave him the knowledge needed to create the best in both worlds of work. He loved with a full heart. Bob was the father of three children with his first wife Rose Bernat who he married in 1950. They had three children together. And then in his second marriage with Betty of almost 50 years, he helped raise three stepchildren. He always loved them all and tried to guide them through life with the best of intentions to have them grow to have loving wholesome families. Bob and Betty felt very blessed to be able to live their dream in their home on the Eastfork of Dry Creek in the Wilderness of Alaska. His faith in God was his mainstay from his first years as a little boy to the day he died. Everything he tried to do in life came after he sought God's counsel. He shared his faith with his family, friends and people that he met both personally and by sharing the stories of his life in his well-received literary work. (His book of his life in Alaska can be found on Amazon.) Bob is one of the last of a very special era. He lived through the great depression with his parents and then joined the Navy at 17 years old to serve at the end of World War II on a what was called the "Good Will Tour". He was a strong Patriot all of his life.
He leaves in this life three children, Robert A. Hilliker of Vanderbilt, Michigan; Eileen (Ed) Brado of North Pole, Alaska, and Janet Davis of Glendale, Arizona.  Stepchildren Diana Chadwell of Delta Jct., Alaska; Pamela Hennessey of North Pole, Alaska and Brian (Lisa) Dinkel of Hobe Sound, Florida,12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 4 great, great grandchildren.
Bob was a giant of a man in presence and stature. He was well loved and admired by many family and friends. We will miss him sorely. There will be no memorial service at Bob's request. We will have a graveside memorial in the Spring.

Lawrence Scott Coutermarsh - February 22, 1961 - September 11, 2023

Departed: 09/11/2023 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: Lawrence Scott Coutermarsh
If you are reading this, that means I have passed away. I know I was shocked when I heard! Who knew? I was shopping in Fred Meyers, and just like that, I was gone. The man who cheated death more times than I could remember now hangs out with the afterlife. The positive is the food is good, and I get to hang out with Stan Lee.
This is an obituary, and it is customary to list all those I have left behind and some of my background.
My name is Lawrence Coutermarsh; I died on September 11, 2023. I was 62 and lived in Fairbanks, Alaska. I am survived by my wonderful wife, Reba Jewel Coutermarsh (Married: 22 years), who has given me the best gift: a lifetime of adventures. Even though our journey has ended here on Earth, I know we still have many journeys to take. My six darling children: Demetrius (Salena) Baker, Ja’net (Karen) Bergman, Sunny Baker, Natasha (Tim) Masse, Calethia Baker, and Clay Coutermarsh, I may not always be there to hold your hand, but I have always had your back. Your love is an eternity, and I am so grateful I get to take it with me. I will truly miss you. Thank you for letting me be your father; I hope I have made you proud.
To my eleven grandchildren, Ethan, Shawn, Brooklyn, Rylie, Emma, Matthew, Ariana, Klinten, Kiley, Konner, and Demetrius Jr. You filled a space in my heart that I never knew was empty. You were my favorite hello and the hardest goodbye. I love you all, and I promise to be with you always. My siblings Sandra (Alan) Schnell, Richard (Karen) Coutermarsh, Randall (Renee) Coutermarsh, Cathy (Brian) Fortin, and Karen (Leigh). Fahel), and predeceased brother Peter Coutermarsh. Even though I have passed, our bond cannot be weakened. I will carry your memories in my heart and hope you will take them in yours. My parents, Leo & Theresa Coutermarsh, preceded me in death; they have always guided me and have been my biggest cheerleaders. Lastly, I leave behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
I was born on February 22, 1961, in Hashua, New Hampshire. I graduated from Nashua High School and, shortly after graduation, enlisted in the Army in the 172d Infantry. I was stationed in Fort Richardson and was honorably discharged in 1983. I was injured while a U.S. Army Ranger in 1985. While in the hospital, the founder of the Alaska Challenge told me about the race. I was released from the hospital that February and competed in his first race in July using a standard wheelchair. Another racer took pity on me and loaned me a race-worthy vehicle. I placed third overall that year and have been racing ever since, including in 1994 when the race was canceled. I ran from Fairbanks alone, prompting a new sponsor to step in for the next 20 years (Sadlers Ultra Challenge). July 2, 1992, was proclaimed “Larry Coutermarsh Day” in recognition of my completion of the Midnight Sun Wheelchair Marathon. I received a new chair courtesy of the Alaska Peace Officers Association. I was an advent bodybuilder and competed in professional bodybuilding competitions during the 90s and 2000s. Fitness has always been my passion. My motto has always been, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.” Lastly, I began my career with the FAA 2000 as a management program assistant. FAA has always been my other family. I enjoyed working with so many astonishing people. Please join us for a memorial service on Thursday, September 21, 2023, between
4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. at Blanchard Family Funeral Home, 611 Noble Street, Fairbanks, AK.

David Charles Kilbourn - May 31, 1948 - August 01, 2023

Departed: 08/01/2023 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: F. L. A. P.  “Finish Like A Pro.”  That was one of David Kilbourn's favorite sayings.  He would write it down on his calendar each month to remind himself of how he wanted to live his life.  And that’s how he lived it, day in and day out, for 75 years. He passed away suddenly at his cabin on Paxson Lake, August 1st, 2023, from natural causes.  It’s all a bit of a shock, none of us, including him, thought this was how it would end, but God sometimes has different plans for us. David Charles Kilbourn lived in Fairbanks for more than 60 years.  He was an incredible businessman, skilled bush pilot, avid outdoorsman, loyal Nanook hockey fan, expert napper and beloved husband, father, and grandfather to the whole Kilbourn clan. David was born in Idaho to Robert Leroy and Jean Beth (Ross) Kilbourn on May 31, 1948. He and his older brother Randy and younger brother Jim "Bo" grew up on their parents' cattle ranch near Gooding.  It was a frontier childhood, one in which he learned the finer things like hunting gophers, cattle drives, milking cows and how to drive a stick shift from his double-leg amputee grandfather, Ben Kilbourn.  At ten, his life was turned upside down when his father, Robert, was killed in an automobile accident.  Cattle ranches don’t give you much room to breathe, and the next day his mother, Jean, was up at the crack of dawn, transformed from a housewife into a cattle rancher herself.  David had tremendous respect for his mother's backbone and grit; she taught him how to be resilient in the face of overwhelming odds. Two years later, David's mother married his dad's best friend, James Schmitt, who had a son and daughter. James had a job at Tip Top Chevrolet in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the newlyweds loaded up their five children, ages 9 to 13, and minimal household goods into their Nash Rambler.  Despite the harsh winter conditions, they began their 2,800-mile journey to Alaska via the ALCAN Highway. They arrived in Fairbanks in March, 1960, to 30 below weather, eventually renting a home in the Aurora neighborhood. David was always proud to say that he was a Fairbanks resident, having lived through the 1964 earthquake, the 1967 Fairbanks flood, the pipeline boom of the 1970s, and the bust of the 1980s. He felt he learned valuable life lessons from these events. David graduated from Lathrop High School in 1966 and began attending the University of Washington in the fall. In his senior year, David was president of his college fraternity, and at one of their parties, he met Aldean Lewis, who was a UW freshman from Olympia, WA. Aldean remembered that David was a tall, handsome man wearing a huge cowboy hat and blue jeans when they met. David recalled that Aldean talked a lot.  The two briefly dated, but when David graduated from UW in 1970 with a degree in finance and accounting, he went back to Fairbanks to work for Paul Gavora in the grocery business.  At the ending of the Longshoremen's strike of 1971, a logistical nightmare for their business, David was tasked with finding out where the company's shipping containers were on the docks in Seattle. While in Seattle, he discovered his fraternity was throwing another party, and David stopped by to visit friends.  Aldean was there too.  The two spent the evening talking.  Then the next night, and the next, and less than a week later, he asked Aldean to marry him.  That’s how David was, when he made up his mind, he was all in. They were married in Olympia on June 24, 1972, and honeymooned in Mexico, where David got to experience the famed “Montezuma’s Revenge” and the mother of all sunburns. They had three sons together: Ben, born in 1975, Adam in 1978, and Peter in 1986. David was a wonderful father.  He made sure his boys knew all about the proper things in life, hunting, fishing, table manners, hockey, joke telling, and pyrotechnics. David started working for Fairbanks grocer Paul Gavora in high school and worked for him for more than 20 years. In the late-1980s, David founded YES Foods (Yukon Express Services) and built it into one of Alaska's largest food service companies. He sold the business to Carr-Gottstein in 1994 and semi-retired. But by 2002, David was restless again and went to work for Totem Ocean Trailer Express.  He started as the Fairbanks manager and worked his way up to Vice President of Pricing and Marketing for the company by the time he retired for good in 2013. Along the way, he decided he needed a hobby and bought the Bentley Car wash.  For the past thirty summers, he and Aldean have religiously cleaned muddy bays, fixed broken sprayer heads and unstuck gummed up quarter machines, helping Fairbanks stay clean.  As much work as the car wash has been, David always enjoyed his mornings talking to friendly travelers from all over the world as they made a pit stop at his car wash. An avid bush pilot since 1975, David’s flown all over Alaska and the West in his Cessna 185. He had a quiet confidence about him that made you know he had everything handled.  He had a saying he loved to share, “There’s old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no Old, Bold Pilots.”  In all the years we flew with him, we always knew he would get us to where we were going safely.    Being a pilot opened up Alaska to his friends and family.  He took us places few other people have ever seen, hunting and fishing in some of the most beautiful wilderness imaginable.  Moose camp, Duck camp, Fishing camp, for close to 50 years David got to experience the parts of Alaska that outdoorsmen dream of.  And he knew it.  He cherished his time in the woods, it’s what he loved most about Alaska.  As part of that love, he knew he needed to stay involved.  He was an active member of the Western Arctic Caribou Herd Working Group and a member of Resident Hunters of Alaska. In 2022, David and Aldean celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary at their property on the Mauneluk.  Most would look at the ramshackle wood cabin with matching outhouse, located in the middle of nowhere, accessible only by float plane or boat, and shudder.  For David and Aldean, it was the perfect location to celebrate a half century together.  The two were true partners in life.  They had their disagreements over the years, David could be a real grump from time to time, and Aldean still talked too much, but they were great together.  They made each other better and were each other's biggest fans. Last Christmas, David's and Aldean's three sons, their spouses, and grandchildren were blessed to spend a wonderful family Christmas together in Fairbanks for the first time.  It was a special trip and we all talked about the future and how we would plan to do it more often.  David won’t be there next time, and he will be missed.  But the life he lived and the lessons he taught will be.  F.L.A.P…. Finish Like A Pro.  We will David, we will. David is survived by his wife Aldean, his sons Ben, Adam (wife Shana, grandson Zev), and Peter (wife Lauren, grandson Charlie), a brother Randy (wife Vicki), a nephew Brandon, a sister-in-law Tammy, and cousins in Texas and Oregon. He was also looking forward to the birth of his first granddaughter, whom Peter and Lauren are expecting in September. A celebration of Life for David will be held at the Fairbanks Curling Club on Friday, August 11th at 6:30 PM. In keeping with David's wishes, the family plans to spread his ashes near their cabins in Paxson and on the Mauneluk. The family requests that instead of flowers, friends consider donating to the UAF Hockey Program through the UAF Face Off Club in David's memory.  The web address: https://engage.alaska.edu/uaf/foc

Nook also had a passion for cooking and would spend hours watching cooking shows. Her love for food and culinary creativity inspired her own cooking and baking endeavors, which brought immense joy to her loved ones.
Above all else, Nook had a heart full of love for her family and her children held a special place in her life. Kristina and Nook were inseparable, even when half a continent apart, sharing a deep bond and serving as each other's support through life's ups and downs. Their friendship was unparalleled. Erik brought her immense pride and joy and she treasured their countless shared experiences. He always had a special place in her heart as her “baby boy”, no matter how old he was.
Nook's love for her family extended to her dogs as well. She adored her furry companions, Jadis and Jewel, who brought her comfort and joy. They were more than her pets; they were beloved members of her family.
In her leisure time, Nook found great pleasure in watching movies. She had a special fondness for Marvel movies and the high-octane excitement of the "Fast and Furious" franchise. Evenings spent watching these films with Erik were treasured moments of shared excitement and enjoyment. Nook also loved Disney's "Frozen." She adored the magical tale and the enchanting music. In the days leading up to her passing, Nook and her children, Kristina and Erik, watched it multiple times, immersing themselves in the story and even participating in an impromptu sing-along. These precious moments of joy and togetherness will forever be cherished by her loved ones.
Nook will be deeply missed by her children, Kristina (Chris) Barber and Erik Powers. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Mary Morris, and her siblings, Roy Hollens and Theresa (Eugene) Hollens-Buckwalter. Additionally, she leaves behind her nieces and nephews: Nichole (William) Holmes, Josie Hollens, Angel Hollens, Alasia Hollens-Buckwalter, John Buckwalter, Kris Cox, and Anthony Cox. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ubon Hollens and Joseph Hollens.
A funeral service to honor Nook's life will be held on July 22, from 11am-12:30pm at Blanchard Family Funeral Home, 611 Noble St., Fairbanks, AK 99701.
Flowers or a donation to a cancer focused charity of your choosing are welcome as a meaningful tribute to Nook's memory.
Nook Powers brought love, joy, and warmth to those around her. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her. May she rest in peace.

Kevin Charles Johnson - June 08, 1992 - July 01, 2023

Departed: 07/01/2023 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: It is with heavy hearts we announce the unexpected passing of Kevin Charles Johnson on July 1, 2023 at the age of 31. Kevin was born on June 8, 1992 in Fairbanks Alaska and made it his home.
Born a 6th generation Alaskan, Kevin grew up surrounded by family. He grew up loving everything about Alaska. He was an avid fisherman from an early age. At age 5, trolling at Harding Lake, he caught a lake trout almost as big as he was and big enough for a family dinner of 15 people.  Some of his fondest memories of his youth was time spent at Harding Lake. At age 8 he started on the annual duck hunting trip with his dad, brother, and family friend to their camp on the Tolovana. He continued going on those trips almost every September and was really looking forward to going again this year since it was the first year his young nephew would be coming. Although it was called a duck hunting trip, Kevin’s love was in the fishing and he currently holds the camp record for the largest pike caught.
In the winter he loved our family trips to Cantwell to ride snowmachines in the mountains. We would ride all day and then at night go back to his aunt’s Cantwell home for hot cocoa, a warm fire, and a bowl of home-made chicken soup. Kevin also had a love for hockey and spent the winter months on the ice from the age of 5 through high school. Kevin again brought his love of hockey back into his life when he began assistant coaching last year with his brother for his nephew’s hockey team. He had so much fun that it spurred him into joining up with a men’s league.
At 14 years of age, he began working at NAPA and continued working through college. He was highly respected there for his excellent customer service and product knowledge. He was always quick to greet customers with a smile and a willingness to help.
At age 15 he saw and purchased his pride and joy, a worn out 1966 GMC pickup. With a lot of effort, he fully restored it to road worthy condition. Every summer you would see Kevin behind the wheel, with a big smile on his face, traveling the streets of Fairbanks. Once, while traveling down Chena Hot Springs Rd, he was stopped by a Trooper with lights blazing. When Kevin asked what he did wrong the Trooper said, “Nothing. I just want to tell you that all of us at the department think you have the coolest truck”.
In 2007, when Kevin was in 8th grade, he joined the Lathrop High School Ballroom Dance Team where in 2009 he met the love of his life, Siri Johnson. He continued dancing on the team through his senior year of 2011, the year Siri and Kevin began dating.
Kevin graduated from Monroe High School and began attending UAF where he discovered his love for firefighting and emergency medicine. He volunteered with Chena Goldstream Fire & Rescue and was subsequently hired at the University of Alaska Fire Department and received his license in Paramedicine in 2016. Kevin was employed as a Driver/Paramedic at the City of Fairbanks Fire Department and at the same time provided volunteering/teaching at the North Pole Fire Department. Kevin truly found the right profession for him. He was ever so proud of his work and his department and poured his heart and soul into it. He loved all the people he worked with in all the local departments. We know he will be missed by his many friends and colleagues there.
Kevin and Siri loved to visit the local breweries and distilleries, tasting, comparing, and learning about all the different types of beers and wines. We were so blessed to get those phone calls, “Hey, what are you guys doing tonight? Want to meet up with us for a drink?” Kevin’s good friend Tyler had been teaching him how to make mead and he was proud to bring us a bottle last weekend of some he had just finished.
Kevin would be best described through the sentiments that his friends and colleagues expressed about him. Kevin was a character. He was always ready with a smile, joke, laugh or hug. He was happy, positive and upbeat and always made everyone laugh with that crazy sense of humor. Kevin was friends to everyone he met. He made people feel accepted and brightened everyone’s day, had a loving, kind, joyful nature and believed in the best parts of everyone. He had an infectious attitude for life. His joy, creativity, and excitement influenced and touched the heart of every soul that had an opportunity to stand in his presence. Kevin’s enthusiasm for life will be greatly missed by many.
He was predeceased by his grandfather, Charles Machetta, grandmother, Vera Machetta, Grandfather Curtis Johnson, and uncle, Craig Johnson.
He is survived by his grandmother Patricia Johnson, parents, Alan and Linda Johnson, brother Eric Johnson, niece Emma Johnson and nephew Cole Johnson, aunt Nancy Machetta, uncle Chuck Machetta, great aunt Margaret McPherson, aunt Kathy(Mike) Keller, and cousins Matthew(Stacy) Frappier, Kelly(Stephen)Stahl, Nicholas(Kathryn) Frappier, Zachary Johnson, Kirsten(Aaron) Gaustad, Michael Meggitt. And of course, the love of his life, fiancée Siri Johnson.
We would like to give a huge thank you to the fire community for all their love and support. We could not have done this without them. Also, to the many, many friends and family who have reached out to us with love, prayers, and help in our time of need. We love you all.

Steven Lewis Taylor - July 10, 1963 - July 01, 2023

Departed: 07/01/2023 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: In the early morning hours on July 1, 2023, Steve passed peacefully under the midnight sun.
Steven Lewis Taylor was born in Manchester, NH, to Lorraine A. (Laprise) and Paul M. Taylor on July 10, 1963.
Raised in Deerfield, as a young man, Steve worked alongside his father in the family logging business, Paul Taylor & Sons. The call for adventure beckoned him, inspired by his grandfather, John Walter Taylor, an accomplished trapper and outdoorsman. In 1987, Steve arrived in Fairbanks, Alaska, ready to carve out a new path for himself. Initially finding work in logging, he then sought employment at the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner and Commercial Printing Company. It was during this time he forged a lifelong friendship with Charles “Chuck” Gray, publisher, bush pilot, and hunting guide. Steve and Chuck became fast friends, spending countless hours working on projects and flying several times to Dune Lake, where they cut trapping trails and caught rainbow trout.
Steve had a great love for the outdoors. When the opportunity came, he plotted a homestead up the Nenana River, built a cabin, and spent many years working the property, hunting, camping, fishing, or just enjoying a cup of coffee by the river. Steve looked forward to winter camping and spent many nights up in the White Mountains, north of Fairbanks. Steve’s innate knack for handiness and his engineering mindset has always thrived. Whether it was constructing a boat from scratch or fine-tuning a sled, Steve's mind was always buzzing with ideas on how to improve things. He was a talented and skilled woodworker, and he designed and raised his own timber frame home.
In 2000, Steve left Commercial Printing for the FNSB School District, taking his skills to the print shop as a pressman. With a desire to get out of the office, Steve moved to Nutrition Services, expediting and delivering meals and supplies to all schools in the district. Throughout his 20-year career, known for his unwavering dedication and ability to beat deadlines, Steve became a valuable asset to the hardworking administrative secretaries and kitchen managers who relied on his swift assistance. Steve became involved with Interior Girls Softball Association when the South Davis Park fields opened around 2010. Upkeep of softball fields is demanding, and Steve accepted the challenge, studied the methods of infield maintenance and lawn care. He loved being outside, working for himself and his effort impacted the skills and growth of so many young ball players. Steve’s commitment and contribution were recognized throughout Alaska by teams and organizations. When folks reached out to him for advice, his most helpful response was, "You have to care about what you're doing."
Steve was an avid hockey fan and spent many winter nights with friends at the Carlson Center to cheer on the Alaska Nanooks. You could always find him listening to ESPN, catching up on everything Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins. Not just with sports, Steve’s roots run deep in New England. He took great pride being a twelfth-generation descendant of Anthony Taylor, a founder of Hampton, NH (1639).
Steve volunteered in unexpected places. He stepped up to help Fairbanks Drama Association on several shows with set construction and strike. He even worked a show as a stagehand, moving the set during scene changes. Steve liked his solitude, especially in the wilderness, but he never turned away from a challenge and an opportunity to support his friends and family. Steve was undeniably a generous, loyal, and true friend.
Over the last twenty-one months, Steve battled glioblastoma (GBM), an aggressive cancer tumor in the brain. After surgery and treatment, he was eager to continue working and doing all the things he loved. Even during continued chemo treatment, Steve embarked on a solo motorcycle ride from Alaska to New Hampshire, a brave adventure similar to the bold journey of a young man 35 years prior, leaving New Hampshire for Alaska. Steve’s Alaska family, Valerie Stilipec, lovingly supported Steve through appointments, treatments, doctor communication, and paperwork. Along with Steve Wade, James Wilson, and Carolyn Vaught, they ensured Steve could maintain a routine and achieve goals. In his final days, Steve was surrounded by dear friends and loved ones, visits that gave him peace of mind.
Steve returns to Epping, New Hampshire, to be laid to rest with his parents in Prospect Cemetery. Steve is survived by his siblings Bruce Taylor, Linda Widmer, Peter Taylor, and Wendy Gilman, nieces and nephews Paul Morin, Joshua and Stephanie Taylor, Shannon and Brandon Desilets, Dylan Fuller, and great nieces and nephews Fulton, Aiden, Ambrose, Hazel, and Brinley, and cousins and so many wonderful friends.
